Weekly Wellness: Control Your Junk Food Cravings

Imagine: It’s the afternoon and you’re experiencing that afternoon slump. This slump can lead to a craving for sugar, salt, or caffeine. Many of us deal with these cravings on a frequent and even daily basis.

Here are six tips to resist your junk food cravings:

  1. Plan Ahead – Planning your meals and snacks ahead of time. This means you will be less likely to grab a sweet treat someone has brought to the office.
  2. Shop the Perimeter – Shop the perimeter in the grocery store. These foods are real foods, rather than highly processed food products. Over time, your body and palate will get used to fresh vegetables, fruit, grains, and proteins.
  3. Eat Healthy Fats – One of the common myths is that fat makes you fat. In fact, your body needs fat! Try to avoid trans fats and limited saturated fats by replacing them with heart-healthy fats, such as nuts and avocado.
  4. Eat Enough Protein – Protein makes you feel full. When you’re full, there is less room for junk food.
  5. Try Fruit – Fruit is filled with vitamins, antioxidants, fiber, and water. Fruit is a great alternative to manufactured sugar and will help satisfy your sweet craving during the day.
  6. Focus on Adding Healthy Foods – The more healthy foods you add in, the easier it is to resist the unhealthy foods.
