This month brings several exciting developments across Wethersfield Public Schools that highlight our continued commitment to academic growth, student experience, and community partnership. We are thrilled to highlight our new collaboration between Silas Deane Middle School and the Connecticut Science Center, which will provide both on‑site and off‑site laboratory learning experiences for our 5th, 7th, and 8th grade students. These opportunities will be structured within our WIN framework, ensuring that enrichment, exploration, and hands-on science learning are accessible to all students. This partnership represents the kind of innovative, student‑centered programming we are proud to expand across WPS.

I also want to extend sincere appreciation to the Board of Education for their investment last spring in new WHS band uniforms. The uniforms were delivered last week, and our students will proudly debut them at performances this fall. This investment directly enhances student pride, visibility, and the overall quality of our performing arts program.

At SDMS, we are encouraged by the academic growth demonstrated through grade‑level curricular assessments. These results reflect the collective effort of our building administrators, the Office of Teaching and Learning, and, most importantly, our SDMS teachers, whose dedication, expertise, and daily commitment to students continue to drive meaningful improvement. Their work is deeply appreciated.

As part of the Highcrest principal search, I have conducted focus groups with families and students, administered a staff and parent survey, and held open office hours at Highcrest to ensure staff members had direct access to share their perspectives. I have also scheduled dedicated time with Highcrest staff to verify the needs and priorities they believe are essential in the next school leader. This community‑driven process will help us identify a principal who reflects Highcrest’s needs, values, and aspirations.

Accountability Index (AI)

Finally, we are awaiting the release of the Accountability Index (AI) from the Connecticut State Department of Education, expected by the end of the month. For reference, I have included our historical AI data for WPS and each school below to support ongoing analysis and planning.

DEPARTMENT UPDATES DEPARTMENT UPDATES

Work is currently in process and audits for fiscal years 2025 and 2026 are anticipated to be completed prior to June 2027.

  • Interactive Viewboards Expansion The WPS IT Department continues to roll out additional Viewboards across our school district. Feedback from educators has been overwhelmingly positive, with teachers highlighting the valuable impact these interactive tools are having on classroom instruction and student engagement. Two new Viewboards were installed at our Highcrest Elementary School this past week.

  • IT Shared Services Access Control Upgrades Our IT Shared Services team has successfully completed Phase I of the district and town door access upgrade. This project replaced aging infrastructure at the Wethersfield Police Department and integrated access controls so that all police officers now carry a single access badge valid for both the Police Department and every school building, significantly enhancing emergency response capabilities. Building on this success, IT Shared Services has initiated Phase II of the project. This phase focuses on extending badge-access control to key exterior doors at Town Hall, the Wethersfield Public Library, and the Community Center. These upgrades will increase facility security town-wide while providing seamless, single-badge access across both school and town facilities for authorized personnel. In addition to these enhancements sharing server space and software licensing between the town and schools allows us to realize budgetary savings on both sides.

  • As cybersecurity events continue to rise across the education sector, the WPS-IT Team remains vigilant in monitoring and maintaining the security of our computer networks and computing devices district-wide. Our priority is to ensure a safe, stable, and reliable technology environment for all staff and students. The IT team works continuously behind the scenes to update system defenses and monitor for potential threats.

Security Security

  • SRO Knapp, SRO Silva, Assistant Principal Webb, Assistant Principal Voisine and Director Baribault attended a two day training session at the Wethersfield police department focusing on school threat assessments and fostering a safe school climate. The training was presented by Don Shomette, a nationally recognized expert in the field. The information provided during the training will be brought back to the district and used to enhance our current threat assessment and safe school climate protocols.

  • Gizmo Visits Charles Wright School! - Through a generous grant from the Child Health and Development Institute (CHDI), Charles Wright School hosted a special Family Wellness Evening, bringing together more than 40 children and 40 registered parents for an evening focused on mental health, wellness, and self-care. Joe Drane from FAVOR shared valuable self-care strategies with parents, while Nicole Carango from Amplify and fellow therapy dog handlers engaged students in a fun and meaningful experience. Nicole read Gizmo’s Pawesome Guide to Mental Health, and children had the opportunity to meet and interact with four wonderful therapy dogs! Each child also received fidgets and self-regulation strategy cards to help create a calming space at home. It was a wonderful evening of learning, connection, and supporting the well-being of our students and families!

  • Wethersfield was awarded a $25,000 grant to target chronic absenteeism and is an official LEAP (Learner Engagement and Attendance Program) district. In April 2021, LEAP was launched to address absenteeism and disengagement. The program has continued, offering home visits to connect directly with families and students to establish trusting relationships, help return them to a more regular form of school attendance, and assist with placement in summer, after school, and learning programs. Wethersfield will use the funding to target grades in which there is the highest chronic absenteeism and to address the discrepancies between the high needs population.

  • Wethersfield Public Schools Awarded Smart Start Preschool Expansion Grant! - Wethersfield Public Schools is excited to announce that the district has been awarded $172,500 through the Connecticut Office of Early Childhood (OEC) Smart Start Preschool Expansion Grant to establish a new full-day preschool classroom at Charles Wright Elementary School. This exciting opportunity will expand access to high-quality, affordable early childhood education for Wethersfield families, serving 15 children. The program will provide a nurturing, inclusive learning environment that promotes early literacy, social-emotional development, kindergarten readiness, and strong family partnerships. The grant includes $97,500 for program operations and $75,000 for classroom improvements and resources. This investment represents an important step in the district's continued commitment to ensuring that our youngest learners have the foundation they need to learn, grow, and thrive!

Talent Management Talent Management

  • We have completed the CSDE EDS 165 report for certified staff. This report ensures that teachers have the required certifications and that we are in compliance with state requirements.

  • The Highcrest Principal search has begun. The position was posted on the WPS website and CTReap. Additionally, a targeted advertisement was sent to Connecticut certified administrators. An inclusive process for stakeholders is planned.

  • The paraeducator health insurance subsidy is being processed for eligible staff, per the CT legislation.

  • The Talent Management Office is assisting staff in completing the DCF Mandated Reporter training which requires a specific online platform and some technical assistance.

  • Certified staff and their evaluators are completing their beginning of the year meetings to reflect and set professional learning goals.

  • The CT Science Center is coming to Wethersfield Public Schools! - Our science team at Silas Deane Middle School will have the opportunity to engage in professional development on November 3rd, with Science Center Educators to lift opportunities for students to engage in inquiry based, NGSS aligned lab experiences. The CT Science Center will be facilitating on-site field trips with every 7th and 8th grade science cohort throughout the school year, to enhance core units of study and provide enriching learning opportunities for all SDMS scientists! Interested in joining the STEM pipeline? The CT Science Center is offering free opportunities for middle and high school students to explore STEM career pathways! Learn more and register HERE!

  • The Wethersfield Elementary team has partnered with Literacy How to strengthen students’ oral language skills. A consultant provided model lessons on oral sentence and paragraph extensions at Charles Wright and Hanmer Schools which teachers then implemented in their grades 2 & 3 classrooms. Wethersfield will continue to collaborate with Literacy How for the remainder of the school year for on-site literacy strategy modeling.

  • In middle school mathematics, we are collaborating with Melisa Grove of Compass Education Solutions to engage teachers in data informed instructional planning for our middle school WIN (What I Need) block. Teachers are utilizing their students' most recent assessment data to provide experiences for them to re-engage with their learning and increase their proficiency on skills from their grade level and beyond!

Introduction to Business: Students were asked to predict the current state of the U.S. economy (stage in the business cycle). They researched economic indicators and provided evidence to support or dispute their prediction. They created posters to illustrate their findings. Upon completion, students completed a gallery walk, presented to class, provided peer feedback and self-reflection.

In WeConnect, grade 9 students are in their second lesson with school counselors and are learning about what a high transcript is and how the weighted GPA is calculated. In their first lesson, they learned about the WHS graduation requirements and how to find which courses complete Humanities and STEM elective buckets. College admissions expectations were also a topic students were very interested in learning about as they consider their high school course plan.

LEARNING TAILS FROM SDMS! Last week, SDMS welcomed Finnegan from Learning Tails for a day in our Wellness Center! Students and staff had the opportunity to meet him and experience the comfort, connection, and joy a facility dog can bring to a school.

We look forward to welcoming Finnegan back as we continue our work to strengthen the school climate, build a positive culture, and help every student feel a sense of belonging.

Keeping Lunch Fun! Lunch came with a little friendly competition as students participated in a corn shucking contest! Students got a closer look at the fresh, local, seasonal corn being served while sharing some laughs and cheering each other on. It was a simple way to connect students with their food and make room for a little fun as a school community.

Pop-Up Attendance Days! Our attendance pop-up day brought some unexpected water balloon fun to SDMS! These surprise events help us celebrate being together and build the connections that make students look forward to school. Congratulations to Team Indigo for reaching 100% attendance that day!

We want students to rest and recover when they are sick. When they are healthy, we want them here, learning, connecting, and enjoying being part of our school community.

Hanmer 5th graders are rocking the vote! Students in Hanmer's 5th grade classes worked hard on creating a platform for their participation in the Kid Governor program. Friday morning, students shared their speeches in hopes that their peers will elect them as Hanmer's Kid Governor candidate. From there, candidates are selected from schools across the state to run for Kid Governor for the entire state. This is a great, interactive opportunity for our students to dive into their Social Studies learning!

The Highcrest PTO sponsored Bubbleologist Casey Carle with 2 Bubblemania Assemblies on October 16th. Students learned about the science behind all things bubbles: Did you know that foggy and humid weather are much more conducive to bubble making than clear and sunny days? Students especially enjoyed the finale, when their classmates were encased in bubbles!

Emerson-Williams Emerson-Williams

On October 2 in the evening, Emerson-Williams hosted its third annual Cafecito Hispano in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month! This wonderful event featured dancing, music, food, instruments, performances, poems, crafts, trivia, balloons, prizes, and SO MUCH PRIDE in the beauty of the Hispanic cultures that make up a very vibrant and wonderful part of our EW school community. On October 8, we loved participating in the annual Tackle Literacy Day. Our students and staff had a blast welcoming back several former EW Tigers (who are now WHS football players). These football players stayed with us at EW from 2:20 pm - 3:00 pm. They spread out amongst several classes in Grades K-4. They read stories to our students, joined in on our Daily Community Building Circles, and spoke with our students about the importance of doing a great job in school. They also signed a ton of autographs! Our students definitely viewed these football players as celebrities, and this was a great afternoon for both our students as well as the WHS students.

Charles Wright Charles Wright

On October 8th, Charles Wright celebrated their first Family Breakfast of the year. It was a great opportunity for families and staff to come together for a great start to the day while also taking time to share at-home reading strategies. Thanks to our PTO for sponsoring this family breakfast and thanks to all staff, students and families who had the opportunity to participate.

In an effort to increase school-home communication, the CW team set a goal of making 500 positive phone calls over the course of the year. We are proud to share that we are 20% of the way to reaching our goal and it is only October! Thanks CW staff for continually ‘sweating the small stuff’ and recognizing all of the good our kids do each and every day!
