New! The Eagle Newsletter is changing!

Beginning next week, our students are taking over the newsletter! They’ll be writing, editing, and designing each issue. Students will find it in their Canvas accounts, and parents will still receive it by email on Tuesday evenings. Our goal is to give both parents and students the same important information in one place—while giving students a chance to practice real-world writing and publishing skills.

As they learn the ropes, you may notice a few bumps along the way. We ask for your patience and encouragement as they grow into their new roles.

If you’d like to contribute something to the newsletter, please use this link and submit your request by Wednesday night.

Memory Equals Success

Hello Eagle Families- Having your student’s ID number memorized (or written somewhere safe) is a small step that makes a big difference! This number is used in many places, including the lunch line, checking out library books, logging in to school systems, and more.

You can help by:

1-Writing the number in your student’s Eagle Agenda or planner.

2-Storing it in a safe spot inside their binder or pencil pouch.

3- Practicing it with them until they have it memorized (a few minutes a day works wonders!).

Knowing their ID number means your student will be ready in the lunch line and beyond — helping them move faster and stay focused on what matters most: learning and connecting with friends.

Thank you for helping our Eagles soar!

Attention All Runners!

Join ASES Cross Country and Coach McKercher after school on Tues/Thurs starting Monday, August 26. All interested students will need to have a completed sports participant packet on file to participate. Please stop by ASES Room 301 before or after school for more information or visit the ASES sports page on the Mesa Verde website. The deadline to turn in a completed packet for Cross Country is Friday, August 22nd.

After-School Detentions

After-school detentions will begin on Friday, September 5th, and will be held on Fridays for the remainder of the school year. Parents will be notified whenever a detention is assigned.

The most common reason students receive detention is repeated tardiness to class. To stay informed about your child’s attendance and punctuality, please log into ParentVUE, accessible through the PUSD Parent Portal.

    • Applications submitted without a parent or guardian present will not be accepted.

Team MVMS works to ensure our WEB Leaders and Staff have the resources and training needed to lead our school.

Click HERE to check out all the things the PTSA has to offer.

We have a new website we are using to manage our membership enrollment via Zeffy.

Mesa Verde has the most amazing volunteers and members, and was the #1 middle school in the Poway Unified School District for PTSA Memberships last year, with 400 members. Let’s show PUSD that Mesa Verde still has the best membership participation!

General School Information General School Information

Access to the Office

As Mesa Verde is a closed campus, our front door will be locked at all times. There is a door bell/buzzer system which MVMS students, parents, and visitors will need to ring to gain access. Once you ring the doorbell it will notify staff that someone is at the door and you will be buzzed in. Please be patient as we may be helping another guest.

ATTENDANCE INFORMATION

ABSENCE REPORTING:

If your student is absent, please use this link to report your child's FULL DAY absence from Mesa Verde Middle School. A parent or legal guardian must fill out this form. Students are considered truant after 72 hours of the absence if you do not report your child’s absence.

TARDIES:

If a student is not in their seat/locker room by 8:00 am (9:03 am on Wednesdays), he or she is considered tardy.

If your student’s tardy is to be excused, please do ONE of the following:

  • Accompany your student to the Attendance Office and sign them in OR

  • Call and leave a message on the Attendance Hotline OR

  • Send a note with your student to bring to the Attendance Office when they arrive.

Students whose tardy should not be excused still need to check in at the Attendance desk when they arrive, but a parent/guardian is not required to accompany them or send a note.

Parents may not excuse a tardy that occurs between classes during the school day.

If your student believes a tardy was given incorrectly, please have them contact the teacher who marked them tardy.

OFF CAMPUS PASSES (Early Pick-Up):

If your student needs to leave early from school, please send a note with your student. They should take their note to the Attendance Secretary BEFORE school. Please include the following information:

  • Full name of student

  • Reason for leaving

  • Time of departure from school

  • Whether or not they will be returning to school that day

Forgot to send a note?

Call the Attendance Hotline at 858-538-5692 at least 2 hours before pick-up so we can prepare and get a pass to your child. Include all the same information in your message as requested above.

At Pick-Up

Come inside to sign your child out at the Attendance Office. You must bring a valid PHOTO ID. Students may not wait in front of the school to be picked up during school hours.

Upon Same-Day Return

Your student needs to check in at the Attendance Office prior to returning to class. Please request a medical excuse note from your provider and have your student turn it in to the Attendance Office, if applicable.

EXCESSIVE ABSENCES AND TRUANCIES:

The law in California regarding compulsory school attendance for minors is very specific and carries penalties for both parents and minors for failure to comply with these regulations. The process is explained below with the purpose of providing full disclosure about the legal responsibility all parents have to make sure their children attend school on time, every day. Thank you for your cooperation as we work together to provide your children with the finest education. Students on Inter/Intra District Transfers (IDTs) may receive an IDT Revocation Warning Letter(s).

Excessive Excused Absences:

12 full-day excused absences in one school year are considered excessive. Parents will receive a letter from the school office as notification. 16 absences will trigger a second letter, and 20 absences will trigger a third letter.

To avoid this process, please try and provide a medical note from your doctor/dentist if your student has a need to miss school for medical reasons. Any absence excused by a medical note does NOT count toward your student’s number of absences.

Truancy:

Three full-day truancies (unexcused absences) in one school year will trigger a letter home. Six truancies will trigger a second letter, and nine will trigger a third letter.

Copies of the above letters are sent to the district’s Student Attendance and Discipline office. Students with truancies or excessive excused absences will be referred to a Student Attendance Review Team. This team is composed of Poway Unified School District personnel and works with the student and parents to eliminate attendance problems and issues appropriate disciplinary measures.

Medical Notes: When your student misses any amount of school for a doctor/dentist appointment, it is beneficial to his/her attendance record to bring an official medical note to the attendance desk. Any all-day absence excused by a medical note does not count toward your student’s absence total.

Health Office Information

Does Your Student Need Medication at School?

Poway Unified School District philosophy is that parents bear the primary responsibility in providing medication for their students. Whenever possible, medication should be administered at home. Parents have the option to personally administer medication to their child at any time during the school day. Health assistance can be provided to support student learning and attendance. Medication administration is provided under the direction and indirect supervision of the resource nurses in Health Services. If a student needs medication during the school day, the following procedure must be followed, according to Ed Code:

  • Complete an Authorization for Medication Administration form (H-26) for all prescriptions, over the counter, and herbal medication. The form requires signatures by both the parent and the student’s physician. The physician must be licensed in the state of California.
  • The completed form should be given to the Health Technician at the same time as you deliver the medication.
  • The medication must be in a pharmacy-labeled container stating the student’s full name, medication name, proper dosage, and time to be given.

Please check the expiration date on all medication you provide to the school site and update this medication as needed.

  • Long term medication: Provide no more than a 1 month supply and replenish the medication as needed.
  • Over-the-counter medication (i.e. Benadryl, Tylenol, or herbal medication): Medication must be in original container clearly labeled with student’s name. Parent and physician authorization is required.
  • Sunscreen and Throat Lozenges/Cough Drops may be administered to preschool/elementary school students with parent authorization only by completing and signing the top portion of the H-26 form. A physician signature is not required. All products must be in original packaging and labeled with the student’s name. No authorization for Sunscreen and Throat Lozenges/Cough Drops is required for Middle School or High School students.
  • Epi-pens and Epinephrine auto-injectors: A Potential Anaphylactic Reaction form (H-58) should be completed and signed by physician and parent. (H-26 form is not necessary)
  • Asthma: Please provide spacers for inhalers, if indicated, and review your child’s use of the inhaler with the school site Health Technician.
  • ESS and Medication: Health Technician and ESS Coordinator can communicate and share forms. However, you must provide separate containers of medication for each location.

Note: Poway Unified School District has a “zero tolerance” drug policy for all students.

Do not put your child at risk of receiving disciplinary action! Don’t send your child to school with any medication unless you have followed the medication procedure. Remember, even Tylenol or Advil are considered to be drugs.

Students may carry their own medication only if they are responsible and an Authorization to Carry Medication While at School form (H-26B) has been signed by the physician, parent, and student.
