National Hispanic Heritage Month
The theme for National Hispanic Heritage Month in 2025 is "Collective Heritage: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future". This theme, chosen by the National Council of Hispanic Employment Program Managers (NCHEPM), celebrates the rich history and achievements of Hispanic and Latine communities while emphasizing their role in shaping the future
What the theme means:
Collective Heritage:
This highlights the shared cultural traditions, stories, and experiences that unite Hispanic and Latine communities.
Honoring the Past:
It recognizes and learns from the historical journeys, lasting achievements, and vital contributions of past generations.
Inspiring the Future:
The theme also focuses on the present and future, celebrating the unique voices and experiences of those who continue to pioneer change and guide the path forward for upcoming generations.
Notable Hispanic Figures
Carlos Humberto Santana Barragán is a Mexican-born guitarist and founding member of the rock band Santana, known for their innovative fusion of Latin, blues, and rock music. Santana rose to fame in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and the band's distinctive sound and diverse lineup gained recognition after their 1969 Woodstock performance. Santana's distinctive guitar style has transcended generations and racial boundaries, and he's considered a pioneer of Latin rock guitar.
Henry Gabriel Cisneros is an American politician and businessman. He served as the mayor of San Antonio, Texas, from 1981 to 1989, the second Latino mayor of a major American city and the city's first since 1842.
Ana Mendieta was a Cuban-American performance artist, sculptor, painter, and video artist who is best known for her "earth-body" artwork. She is considered one of the most influential Cuban-American artists of the post–World War II era. Born in Havana, Cuba, Mendieta left for the United States in 1961.

Student Video Contest!
My name is Franki Moscato (girl, 23, Oshkosh). I am “that Wisconsin girl” who won a Gold Ticket on ABC’s American Idol. Perhaps you’ve seen me sing the Anthem for the Packers (5), Bucks (7), NASCAR (1), or Whitehouse (2). I am writing to ask you for help communicating a project I am working on to fight teen suicide.
My story includes being bullied out of two schools and finding myself in a dark place. Today, I use my platform and my non-profit, Franki Moscato Foundation, to advocate for teen suicide prevention.
I am inviting Wisconsin students in grades 6-12 to make a 60-second video about being kind, anti-bullying, or somehow preventing teen suicide. See my contest here: http://BeKindContest.com
Video submissions are due by November 1st. We have to hurry! The winning video will be professionally produced and broadcast as a televised Public Service Announcement across Wisconsin. The kids and adults who worked on the project will be invited to be cast in the production spot, and the author’s parents will win a FunJet vacation to the Dominican Republic!

WHO'S UP FOR TRIVIA?
Just for Fun! Did You Know....?
Most ant species can carry 10 to 50 times their own body weight, with some capable of even more, though they are often restricted by friction when dragging heavier objects. This incredible strength is due to their small size, which allows for a higher ratio of muscle mass to total body weight, giving them the ability to lift objects like a human could lift a car.
Why are ants so strong?
Proportional Strength:
As an animal's size increases, its volume and weight grow faster than its strength. A small animal like an ant benefits from having a greater cross-sectional area of muscle relative to its overall body size compared to larger animals.
Muscle Structure:
The muscles controlling their jaw movements, called mandibles, are exceptionally large in proportion to their body weight, with the "closer" muscle sometimes taking up a significant portion of the head and total body mass.
Anatomical Features:
Ants use their jaws to grasp objects and their neck muscles to lift, while their legs provide stability.
