2025-2026 4-H Enrollment is Open!

Our new enrollment year has begun! All new and returning members must enroll annually. The cost is $10 per youth. Adult Volunteers are free but may require extra screenings if they are new or have not completed them yet. Access the link here: https://v2.4honline.com

Club Leaders and Adult Volunteers: You MUST enroll and be approved before you begin meeting with your members or volunteering for your activity! Youth must be enrolled before clubs start meeting or participating in 4-H sponsored events!

If you are a returning member and are having issues enrolling, please do not make a new account! Call the Extension Office for help! Please be sure that all information (current club, school, etc.) is up to date and correct!

Returning Volunteers/Leaders Orientation Update

Nebraska 4-H has changed how they do the Volunteers Orientation Training Video Series. The 2 sections in bold are important so please be sure to read them! Reach out to the office with any questions!

  • Volunteers will be required to complete the Orientation training by themselves through 4-H Online. They may be able to do it simultaneously on separate devices with their spouse/partner/another volunteer if they wish, however each individual volunteer will need to do the Orientation training associated with their respective member profile. There will be no workaround permitted at this time.
  • Volunteers will be able to do the training in 6 separate sections (each being 10 minutes or less) at their own pace rather than in one sitting.
  • Volunteer Orientation will now be required every 3 years. This is a change from it being required only during a volunteer’s rescreening year. This will allow us to update the Orientation trainings more frequently if the need arises.
  • All volunteers that enroll after January 5th, 2026, will be required to do the Volunteer Orientation training in 4-H Online regardless if they have completed it previously . The current program year will become the start of their 3-year rotation period for the orientation.

Broiler Pen of 3 Project

The Broiler Project is a great opportunity for 4-H members interested in poultry, animal science, and learning responsibility through hands-on experience. Raising broilers (meat chickens) teaches members about daily animal care, nutrition, record keeping, and livestock management — all while preparing birds for fair exhibition.

What is a Broiler?
Broilers are chickens raised specifically for meat production. They grow quickly and require consistent care, proper nutrition, clean housing, and fresh water daily.

Project Details

    • Contact the office by March 20th to sign up.

    • We must have at least 5 youth signed up in order to offer this project at the fair.

    • Each youth will receive 12 chicks.

    • Cost per chick:

      • $2.80 per bird if our total order is under 100 chicks

      • $2.75 per bird if our total order is over 100 chicks

    • Chicks are expected to be ready around May 27th and must be picked up that day from the office upon arrival.

At fair time, members will select 3 birds that are as close to identical in size and weight as possible to exhibit as their broiler pen.

What Members Will Learn
  • Proper feeding and nutrition requirements

  • Housing and biosecurity practices

  • Monitoring bird health and growth

  • Record keeping and expense tracking

  • Preparing birds for show and evaluation

Broilers typically reach market weight in about 6–8 weeks, making this a shorter-term livestock project that still teaches valuable life skills such as responsibility, time management, and attention to detail.

Nebraska 4-H Volunteer Recognition

One Outstanding Adult Volunteer Award and One Emerging Adult Volunteer Award winner will be chosen for each of the state’s 10 Nebraska Extension Engagement zones. Statewide winners will be named in the each of the youth volunteer and multi-generational family categories.

The nomination period runs through March 18, 2026. Nominations can be submitted by any 4-H member, family, supporter, or Extension staff member. Nominees must fit the award categories and can be a volunteer for any Nebraska 4-H experience. Some examples may include 4-H club leader, project leader, junior leader, county or State Fair volunteer, special interest volunteer (such as robotics or shooting sports), afterschool club volunteer or 4-H camp volunteer. More information, along with the nomination form, is available online at: https://4h.unl.edu/volunteer-recognition.

2026 Special Agronomy Project

The Nebraska Extension Special Agronomy Project gives 4-H members an opportunity to experience a crop that is grown, was grown or has the potential to be grown in Nebraska. Youth participate by receiving seed and resources to grow the crop, research traits of the crop and determine the viability of that crop in the part of the state they live in. The project allows 4-H members interested in agronomy to grow something fun, new, and different. This year, we will be exploring a crop that can be marketed different ways depending on the variety.

In the sixth year of the special agronomy project, youth will explore TWO varieties of popcorn! The first is an heirloom variety that was discovered and developed by a farmer in eastern Nebraska, called Nebraska Red. The second is a commercial variety, Robust 997. Be sure not to plant sweet corn in your garden with these to prevent cross pollination.

Be eligible to enter an exhibit at the County and/or State Fair in the agronomy project area.

Contact your local Extension Office to order packets of seeds. The local Extension Office will order and distribute the seeds to members. For project specifications and details, be sure to go to the Nebraska State Fairbook at https://4hfairbook.unl.edu/fairbookview.php/rules.
