PMSA Python Press
September 29, 2025

A Message from Dr. Sanchez
Hola PMSA Community,
What an amazing week we’ve had at PMSA! Our school was buzzing as we hosted two events that truly showcased the strength of our community and the pride, we share in being Pythons.
The first was Bring Your Parents to School Day, where families had the opportunity to walk the halls, step into classrooms, and experience first-hand the energy and dedication that define the PMSA. It was wonderful to see so many parents and guardians engaging with teachers and seeing the hard work their students put in each day. One especially memorable moment came when Mr. Porter was able to bring his own mother to school, giving her the chance to see him in action as an educator. It was a powerful reminder that learning and growth are a lifelong process.
The second highlight was our Future Pythons Night. Welcoming potential future students and their families to our campus is always a special moment, as we get to share the vision and opportunities that make PMSA such an extraordinary place. Seeing the excitement and curiosity of the next generation of Pythons was such a wonderful experience.
In addition to these events, we launched a new program, Pythons Speak Up. This initiative allows students to anonymously report concerns or incidents that may affect the safety and well-being of themselves or others. More importantly, it empowers our students to take an active role in building a safe, respectful, and supportive school environment. By giving students this tool, we are reinforcing the message that their voices matter and that together, we are all responsible for creating a culture where everyone feels secure and valued.
Thank you all for a great week.
-Dr. Sanchez

Cool Things Happening
Art Exhibit
Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy (PMSA) welcomed the Embracing Our Differences (EOD) Traveling Art Exhibit to its campus Sept. 8–12, allowing students to engage with powerful works of art celebrating diversity, inclusion, and respect.
Throughout the week, PMSA teachers and classes toured the display of 25 large-scale artworks positioned across the school building. The exhibit featured the work of young and insightful artists from around the globe, including contributions from fifth graders in Sarasota, Florida, a ninth grader in Beijing, China, and an artist from Budapest, Hungary.
In addition to viewing the art, PMSA students completed reflection ballots and voted on their favorite pieces. Student responses highlighted the impact of the artwork.
“The ‘Children Raised by the Same Earth’ I think was a nice simple way to show that even though we look different and have different qualities, we still belong to the same place,” said PMSA student Alondra S.
Another student, Isabella G., shared her thoughts on a piece titled Duck Duck Different: “I really enjoyed the duck duck different [art piece] because it shows the differences between the ducks and it’s okay to be different.”
The international art competition and accompanying educational programs have been conducted for 21 years by Embracing Our Differences, a nonprofit organization based in Sarasota, Florida. EOD uses art and educational initiatives to promote kindness, respect, and understanding across cultures. Each year, artists, writers, educators, and students from around the world are invited to participate in the juried competition, which emphasizes the power of art to initiate meaningful conversations.
The traveling exhibit was made possible at PMSA through the Presbyterian Church of Western Springs (PCWS), which coordinates the display for schools, nonprofit organizations, and churches throughout metropolitan Chicago through 2025.
More information about Embracing Our Differences and its mission to create a better world through the transformative power of the arts is available at embracingourdifferences.org.
AP Psychology Students Take Learning Outdoors
Our AP Psychology students recently brought their studies on the Biological Bases of Psychology to life, literally! As part of their unit on neurons and how they function, students stepped outside to create “sidewalk neurons,” designing colorful chalk diagrams that illustrate the different parts of a neuron and their roles in transmitting information. This hands-on activity helped students visualize complex concepts in a creative, memorable way while showcasing their understanding of the brain’s communication system.
Thank you, Ms. Asselborn!
CPR Certification
Last week, sponsors of PMSA clubs and activities completed hands-on CPR training with Ms. McCormick and are now officially CPR certified. The session was an incredible success, with teachers learning how to respond in emergency situations. Even the Assistant Principals joined in as Ms. McElroy and Dr. Mason participated alongside teachers to model the importance of safety and readiness in our school community.
Engineering Fun: Beanbag Launchers & Carnival Games
Over the past three weeks, students worked through the design process to create beanbag launchers using limited materials. They tested and refined their designs for maximum accuracy, then used the landing data to sketch, design, and build carnival games to accompany the launchers. Each game was carefully sized so the grand prize would be won only 3 to 5 percent of the time, just like a real carnival! Check out some pictures of the completed games below.
Thank you, Mr. Nowak!
Senior and AP/Dual Night
On Wednesday, September 17th, parents and guardians of seniors joined us for Senior Night, where building administrators reviewed graduation requirements, school expectations, and incentives for senior year. Following that, AP and Dual Degree Night provided families with detailed information on AP course expectations, dual degree opportunities, and certification options. Counselors assisted building administration, and Dual Degree students Gloria Pieniazek and Aithen Arreguin shared their experiences in the Triton program, giving attendees a firsthand look at the program’s benefits.
Bring your Parent to School Day
Parents and guardians were welcomed to PMSA to experience a day in their child’s school life. They attended classes where teachers led engaging lessons, showcasing the creativity, collaboration, and learning happening in each classroom. Families also joined students in the cafeteria for lunch, giving them a chance to connect with peers. The event highlighted the strong partnership between students, families, and staff, making it a memorable and interactive day for the whole school community.
PMSA Seniors Excel in AP Calculus BC
We are proud to celebrate the 40 PMSA seniors currently enrolled in AP Calculus BC, the equivalent of Calculus II at most colleges and universities. These students began the year building on Calculus I concepts by exploring advanced integration techniques to determine anti-derivatives of complex functions. Using six different methods of anti-differentiation, color-coded on the wall, they worked collaboratively to select the appropriate approach for each problem, then applied their solutions using precise mathematical notation.
By tackling college-level math in high school, these students are not only challenging themselves beyond the standard curriculum but also preparing for success in any STEM field after graduation. This rigorous unit is a major component of the AP Calculus BC curriculum, and PMSA is proud of these seniors for starting the year strong and on track for success on the AP exam in May. Congratulations to all, and we look forward to seeing your continued achievements in math and beyond!
Thank you, Mr. Bokar!
IB English Seniors Bring The Crucible to Life with Puppets
In a creative twist on traditional classroom learning, PMSA’s senior IB English students performed scenes from Arthur Miller’s The Crucible using puppets. This engaging activity allowed students to deepen their understanding of staging and character dynamics while experiencing the play far beyond simply reading it.
AP Human Geography Students Explore Population Dynamics
Students in Mr. Colwell’s AP Human Geography class recently calculated fertility rates using locally collected survey data. They then compared their findings with national trends, sparking an engaging, real-world discussion on population dynamics and demographic change.
Computer Science Principles: The Dawn of Personal Computing
In Computer Science Principles, students have arrived at the 1970s, a pivotal decade in computing history. This era marked the beginning of personal computers, changing the way people interacted with technology. To give students a hands-on glimpse of the past, the class explored an original Atari 800, experiencing firsthand one of the early machines that helped launch the personal computing revolution.
Thank you, Mr. Birch!

¡Gracias, Sr. Birch!
