The brain gets better at what it does. Please carve out expectations and time for reading at home. Need help? Watch this video with your child and use it to foster a discussion in your home.

Reading Changes Your Brain, Here's Why.

Dear Families,

There is no school on Monday, February 16th to celebrate Presidents' Day. We will host our Quarter 2 celebration on Tuesday and Wednesday. During these celebrations, we honor students with 90% or more attendance in Quarter 2, and recognize students and staff who are nominated by our school community for demonstrating our core values of friendship, learning and a commitment to both. Check back next week for photos!

We welcome Mr. Jeremy Richter to our health and physical eduction department. Mr. Richter will be covering Ms. Alex Wahl's leave through at least April.

Please let us know if you have any questions or if we can support in any way.

Have a wonderful week,

Jill Liddle, Principal

Understanding Gender @ Hosford Understanding Gender @ Hosford

We have seen a need for students to understand gender, pronouns and PPS policy regarding gender and bathrooms. Our Queen Straight Alliance group has developed the linked slides to help us educate our student body. They will be taught in advisory periods. Please take a look by clicking here. Thank you to our student leaders for their dedication of time, energy and effort to make Hosford Middle School more inclusive.

Portland Public Schools (PPS) policies, aligned with Oregon law and the Gender Diversity Support Guide, permit students to use restrooms, locker rooms, and changing facilities corresponding to their asserted gender identity. Students may request, but cannot be forced to use, separate, private facilities. Staff must respect a student's chosen name and pronouns, with support plans available for gender transition.

For more support and resources, check out this link.

Forecasting for next year! Forecasting for next year!

Forecasting update for 6th & 7th grade families

This week, counselors went into 6th and 7th grade social science classes for forecasting. Below please find the presentations and links for both grades. Forecasting for next year is due February 5th and should be done on the google sheet attached. Students worked on this during the class visits, but it can be resubmitted up until February 5th. Please feel free to make changes and fill out the form again if you decide to as a family, and we will keep the latest submission. We are so excited for students to try out new electives as they move up, but it's also important to note that no electives are guaranteed at this point. Make sure to rank requests carefully and we will do our best to place kids in the classes they most want.

The Hosford PTSA needs more helpers. We are currently operating without a president and vice president among other board members. The PTSA is responsible for fundraising and distributing around $10,000 for teacher and staff needs every school year, as well as supporting events for students and staff. We could really use help with the following events and tasks:

  • Communications help - admin for Facebook and/or Instagram (low volume posting for restaurant dine-outs and news)
  • Staff Appreciation help - coordinate one or more snack events for staff; do something for Staff Appreciation Week in May; coordinate end-of-year staff party
  • 8th Grade Oaks Park field trip help - help organize meal for the 8th graders at their end-of-year field trip in June
  • 8th Grade Promotion help - help organize reception refreshments at 8th grade promotion in June

Open Positions:

  • Member-at-Large
  • Communications Chair
  • Staff Appreciation Chair
