Keeping Our School Grounds Clean for Our Kids! 🐾

We’re lucky to have such a great neighborhood for walking our dogs, and many of us love strolling near Westchester.

As our students head to class each morning, a few have unfortunately stepped in dog waste on their way inside. To help our kids start their day off right, please remember to:

  • Always carry extra bags on your walks.

  • Keep a close eye on grassy areas and walkways near school property.

  • Bag it and bin it every time.

Thank you for helping keep our school grounds clean, safe, and pleasant for all our students!

🥔 Book Character Potato Contest! 🥔

Bring your favorite book characters to life using a real potato! Show off your creativity and compete for a grade-level prize.

📅 Key Dates

  • Bring Potatoes to School: Starting Thursday, October 8

  • Student Voting: October 15 – 17

  • Winners Announced: October 22 in the Westchester Weekly

📋 Contest Rules

  1. The Character: Choose any character from a real book.

  2. The Base: Start with a real, unpeeled potato of any shape or size.

  3. Decorating & Carving: Use paint, felt, paper, yarn, or glue to decorate. Carving is allowed, but keep in mind that cutting the potato causes it to rot much faster before voting!

  5. Character ID Tag: Bring back your Character ID when you drop off your book character.

K-2 Best Buddies chapter!

Westchester is starting a K-2 Best Buddies chapter! Best Buddies helps build a culture of kindness by bringing students with and without disabilities together for whole group activities, games, and play. Joining the club gives kids a chance to make new friends across different classrooms while building real understanding and acceptance of all kinds of physical, learning, and developmental disabilities. Our goal is to give students a friendly space to connect while learning awareness, understanding, and acceptance of all different kinds of disabilities. We want every child at Westchester to feel seen, valued, and included. When kids learn early on that everyone communicates, plays, and moves in their own unique way, inclusion becomes second nature. Look for details coming home soon on meeting dates and sign-ups!

Dear familias!

¡Feliz Mes de la Herencia Hispana! Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!

Si! We have already started our annual celebration from September 15 to October 15.

Some of you made a nice contribution to this celebration last year. We want to extend this invitation to all the families at Westchester. We would like you to share ideas and ways to observe Hispanic culture and celebrate the many contributions of so many Latinos in our society. Here are some examples: You and your child could read a short book or share something from this culture in your child’s class, such as a souvenir, a piece of music, a dance, a folkloric dress, a game, or a Hispanic celebration your family participates in. If cooking is your specialty, you could cook a dish and share the final product with some comments and a picture of a recipe. Or, you may have a completely different idea for celebrating Hispanic culture. This could be shared with students during regular instruction time.

This year’s spotlight will shine on Perú, but all Hispanic countries are welcome as well!

Check the calendar for Hispanic events this Fall break!
