Thank you Walker PTA, Willard & Pat Walker Charitable Foundation, and Game Time for our new playground!

We are so excited to share that our new playground has been installed. This new structure was made possible by the generous donation of $25,000 from the Willard & Pat Walker Charitable Foundation along with the fundraising of the Walker PTA which contributed another $25,000 and grant funds from Game Time. This new structure is installed and ready for use. Students are so happy to see big slides, a rock-climbing wall, rope climbing, a music-making station, two spinners, and even a small table with seats to take a break! The timing is perfect as we look forward to the warmer temperatures that are ahead.

Did you know that our playground is open to families in the evenings and on the weekends? Please bring your family out and enjoy time together on the playground! We even have picnic tables if you would like to pack a lunch! In addition to the playground, we have a track area that you can use to take a walk, run or ride bikes. Five laps around the trail is one mile.

Have you ever been excited to ask your child about their day to simply get the “fine” or “nothing” answer?

Well an article from Scholastic was shared with me recently and I have tried a few of these tips with my own child and they have really helped. The trick is to ask about things that are specific, but still open-ended. Move beyond “fine” and “nothing” by asking your kids to describe her world. It’s also great to start the conversation with an anecdote from your own day. Try one of these conversation-starters:

  1. Tell me about the best part of your day.

  2. What was the hardest thing you had to do today?

  3. Did any of your classmates do anything funny?

  4. Tell me about what you read in class.

  5. Who did you play with today? What did you play?

  6. Do you think math [or any subject] is too easy or too hard?

  7. What's the biggest difference between this year and last year?

  8. What rules are different at school than our rules at home? Do you think they're fair?

  9. Who did you sit with at lunch?

  10. Can you show me something you learned (or did) today?

I hope these tips help you learn more about your child’s day to increase that connection that our kids so desperately need. It doesn’t take long, but one little moment can truly make a difference. Please see the link below.

Find out more about what your child's everyday school life is like with our guides to each grade (linked below). You can also start important conversations with books that inspire kids to be themselves (linked below), and books that inspire confidence in kids (linked below).
