The MMES Buzz
News from Manchester Memorial Elementary School!

Principal's Note
Dear MMES Families,
What a wonderful surprise I had this morning! I was preparing for the day and Mrs. Schmidt told me that I had a group of students who wanted to make an appointment to meet with me. I put aside what I was working on and she ushered them in. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was a group of first and second grade students who were upset that people have been leaving trash all around the playground after school hours. They asked if they could make an announcement to the school to encourage our students to dispose of trash properly so that we can protect our world!
Of course the answer was "yes!" and they did a great job with their first ever school-wide announcement! We certainly are proud of the scholarly achievements of our students but even prouder of the people they are...positive and caring leaders for today and tomorrow! As they said in the announcement, "Gooooooo Hornets!"
Have a great weekend!
Best,
John
Enrichment at Memorial
Thursday, our Kindergarten students met with Jo-Ann, the creator of Engineering Action, for an hour of robot building. The class provided the students with a hands-on engineering and STEAM educational experience. They used Cubelets and Legos to foster creativity, teamwork and problem solving. The students were engaged and had a blast!
Family Math Ideas
Encouraging your child to use mathematical language is an important part of developing early numeracy and mathematical skills. Which One Doesn’t Belong is a fun way to get kids talking about their mathematical thinking. In these activities, students look at four images and decide which one doesn’t belong. They then defend their choice. For an extra challenge, see if your child can come up with a reason why each of the four images is different from the other three. Have fun!
