A Note from the Principal

Forest Hills Families,

The countdown is on! With only 3 weeks of school in May, we have a jam packed calendar with lots of fun events!

With all the fun events that we have prepared for the month of May, I know many of you will be visiting our campus. Please remember to follow school policies. We are a tobacco and weapon free campus. We also ask that parents please refrain from checking their student out after a school event. This causes major congestion in our office and puts a significant strain on office staff.

Please remember that morning drop off and afternoon dismissal are CELL PHONE FREE times. Many drivers are coming through the line distracted on phones. We want to keep all students and staff safe, so please put your phone up when driving.

Families will soon receive the iReady For Families report. This report will show you your child's progress in proficiency and growth for the school year. Please let your child's teacher know if you have questions.

I look forward to seeing all of our families during the fun events we have planned for May! If I can ever be of assistance to you, please call, email, or stop by! GO FALCONS!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Fowler, Principal

Kindergarten

Kindergarten is nearing the end but we have so much fun learning planned! Let's end this school year strong. In reading we are continuing to read and learn about Animal Habitats. Students have really enjoyed this! We are now working on learning to read and spell words with long vowel, silent "e." Next up we will be working on learning the sounds for digraphs (wh, ch, sh, th) which will help students read and spell words with those. Our writing has improved! We are continuing to work on sentence writing using all the phonics & mechanics skills learned. In math we are beginning our unit on measurement, which is always exciting. Students will learn how to compare the length, height & weight of 2-3 objects. We have quite a lot of fun events going on in May. Make sure to take a look at your child's class newsletter for specific dates and times.

1st Grade

We've almost made it! Hooray! First graders are so excited to wrap up our school year and begin our end of year fun. In reading, students are learning their last few sound/spellings to help them become fluent readers. In math, we are expanding our mindset even more with two-digit numbers, addition and subtraction fluency, and more. We look forward to our upcoming Relay Day on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 13th. Let the fun begin!

2nd Grade

Our second graders are so excited to visit Bear Creek on our class field trip. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to explore nature by stepping outside of the classroom.

We have had such a wonderful year, and we are so excited to see our second graders take flight to third grade.

Over the summer there are a few ways you can help at home. KEEP READING! Review the decodables from this year and also head to the wonderful Florence Public Library to check out books for FREE! It will also help to review telling time, basic addition and subtraction facts, and it will not hurt to get a head start on working on multiplication facts as well!

Have a wonderful summer!

3rd Grade

It is hard to believe we are already at the end of the school year! We have had a wonderful year in 3rd grade. We still have a few more FUN activities this month before the end of school. On May 6th, we are going to the Super Citizen Closing Ceremony at Florence High School. Here we will honor our very own Nurse Ali as our Super Citizen Hero. Our relay day is on May 13th from 8:00-11:30. We hope for good weather and to see you all at this event. On Tuesday, May 20th, third-grade students will be honored at our Awards Ceremony at 8:00.

Thank you for making this a great school year. We all hope you have a wonderful and safe summer!!

4th Grade

We are excited about our upcoming trip to Montgomery on May 9th. We will tour the State Capital and the Archives & History museum. We will tour Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr was a pastor and then enjoy lunch on the Harriott II Riverboat on the Alabama River. We will go back in time to the pioneer days at Old Alabama Town and see a one-room schoolhouse, a shotgun house, a dry goods store, a doctor's office, and an old church.

Our reading unit is diving deep into what makes our country and our state great- just in time for our field trip to Montgomery! We will be learning about important documents, such as the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, and the Constitution. We will learn how our country is filled with national treasures that make it a wonderful place to live!

Math in May is all about the life skills of dealing with time and money. Students will also have a lesson from a local banker that will help students create and manage a budget. These multi-step word problems put student’s math skills to the test to show off what they have learned this year. Our next topic will be problems about length, liquid volume, mass and weight. The fourth grade math team is so proud of how hard our students have worked this year. Let’s finish strong!

5th Grade

In 5th grade math, we just finished up our last unit on input/output tables and will focus on reviewing for the Math diagnostic and benchmark coming up. In 5th grade ELA, we are working hard to finish the year strong! Our students are reading stories and plays that tell the story of our nation through engaging texts, while pairing these with informational articles to deepen their understanding. Students are also strengthening their writing skills as they compose informational essays about the stories they have read. Diagnostic testing is wrapping up, and our students are showing how much they have learned this year. In science, we will be ending the year with glow days! Students will use the scientific method to complete glow in the dark science experiments and the engineering design process to complete glow in the dark STEM challenges. We are looking forward to the coming weeks as we host our first annual 5th Grade vs Faculty basketball game on May 2nd! We also have other fun events scheduled to close out the school year. We would like to invite all parents to attend the events below.
