A message From Mrs. Flemming

Hello Farmar Families,

I hope this communication finds you well. February is going by very quickly and we are close to wrapping up the second trimester of the school year. The past few weeks have been quite busy. Last month we launched the Great Kindness Challenge, Spirit Week, a Spelling Bee with 4th and 5th graders, an Anti-Bullying assembly, class visits from the Marine Science Institute, and so much more!

The vibe on the campus during the launch of the Great Kindness Challenge is one that is hard to describe with words. Our students lead the morning announcements every day with a goal of inspiring their peers to be kind to one another. We had activities during lunch recess daily with the support of our Students in Action and many volunteers. One of the quotes shared by our students was:

“ If you need to choose between being kind and being right, choose being kind and you will always be right.”

Thank you to Meagan Carroll who helped to organize all of the events during The Great Kindness Challenge, including the Cereal Box Dominoes Challenge, which was another opportunity for us to come together as a community in service of others and see the ripple effect of kindness. Because of the generosity of our families and community, we collected many boxes of cereal.

We ask for your continued support in talking with your students at home about kindness and how it extends beyond a week. As shared in an email earlier this week, we are continuing to navigate derogatory language on our school campus. Our words are powerful and we get to choose how we use them. As a school staff and district, we refuse to normalize using derogatory language and causing harm to others mentally or physically. We continue to need your partnership in this work and know that conversations with our young people will be key.

We hope that you and your family enjoy some time together during the upcoming President’s Week break that includes time to unwind, getting lost in a new book, family meals together and

We Have a New Librarian

Please help us welcome Kirsten Woollenweber as our new librarian! She has been with us as a Student Supervision Aide and is beyond excited to step into this new role, bringing such passion and enthusiasm about literacy, community, and having a vision for the library being a hub for our school in so many ways!

5th Graders at Mission Springs

Our 5th graders were able to visit Mission Springs this week in Santa Cruz! Thank you to Ms. Delorefice, Mr. Burckin and Mr. Gomez for making this field trip a reality and all of the volunteers that supported in many ways. The trip was filled with lots of learning that included multiple daily hikes, climbing rock walls, building water-proof shelters, night hikes, learning a barn dance and most importantly creating memories as a community that will last for years to come. We would like to thank D Harris Tours and Bus Rentals for donating the buses for this field trip. We are incredibly grateful for your generosity!

Our Instructional Focus

We continue to focus on helping our students to make significant progress as they work towards mastering grade level standards. Our school site has two areas of focus for Best First Instruction Strategies. Having a Clear Focus for Lessons is one area of focus, making sure that students are aware of what they are learning. Our second area of focus is Multiple Exposures to Practice and Reflect on what is being learned. This includes time to review previous learning, opportunities to practice with feedback in the moment.

Positive Sayings

Students will be asked to share positive sayings or positive quotes from their families or favorite sources and tell a personal story about the saying. Examples include family mottos, wisdom passed down, advice from family members, powerful song lyrics or quotes. Students’ will use their quotes to create positive saying posters around their classroom and school settings. Teachers will be able to use these quotes to support students during the school day. This is a great way for you and your students to engage in discussing positive family sayings or positive quotes that have helped encourage positive behavior. As you are able, please share with your student quotes from family, songs or other sources that have helped to motivate you as well in your preferred language. We look forward to seeing representation from all of our students as we continue to build a culturally responsive and welcoming school community.

Attendance

Please remember that students can be dropped off as early as 7:30 a.m, Monday- Friday. We also continue to serve breakfast in the morning starting at 7:40. Please consider dropping off early and avoiding some of the congestion. We have seen some improvement with tardies and continue to still have 30-40 students that arrive at school late, daily, after 8:00 a.m. Every minute of instruction counts and is essential to your child starting the school day off with the rest of the class.
