On November 17 and November 19 our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will be taking STAAR Interim. These assessments are similar to the STAAR that students will take in the spring. They help students become familiar with the testing format and are predictive of how students may perform on the Spring STAAR.

On these days, the campus is closed. Visitors and volunteers will not be allowed on campus on these two days. This will include having no lunch time visitors. There will be adjustments to specials, recess, and lunch schedules for these two days.

🌟 Why Gratitude Matters for Young Learners🌟

Dear Families,

We believe strongly in creating a supportive and respectful community at school, and a powerful way we do this is through Restorative Practices. These practices focus on repairing harm and strengthening relationships rather than just applying punishment.

The great news is that these strategies are incredibly effective and easy to use at home! Restorative conversations help children learn to take responsibility, understand how their actions affect others, and collaborate on solutions.

Here is some advice on how you can use simple restorative questions and approaches when conflicts arise in your family:

🏡 Using Restorative Questions at Home

When addressing a conflict, disagreement, or mistake, try pausing before jumping to consequences. Instead, use these questions to guide a productive conversation (adjusting the language for your child’s age):

1. What Happened? (The Story)

  • "What happened?" (Give them space to tell their side without interruption.)

  • "What were you thinking/feeling at the time?" (Helps them connect emotion to action.)

2. Who Was Affected? (Understanding Harm)

  • "Who has been affected by what you did?"

  • "How do you think this made your brother/sister/me feel?" (Focuses on empathy.)

  • "What are the thoughts/feelings of the people affected?"

3. How Can We Fix It? (Repairing Harm)

  • "What do you need to do to make things right?" (Empowers them to generate the solution.)

  • "What can we do to make sure this doesn't happen again?" (Focuses on prevention.)

✅ Three Core Restorative Tips

  • Be Curious, Not Critical: Approach the conversation with genuine interest in understanding the situation, rather than immediately assigning blame. Use a calm tone and open body language.

  • Focus on the Behavior, Not the Child: Instead of saying, "You are messy," try saying, "Leaving your toys out caused me to trip." This separates the child's identity from the mistake.

  • Collaborate on a Solution: A good restorative agreement involves the person who caused the harm and the person who was harmed working together on a solution. This could be a verbal apology, helping to clean up the mess, or agreeing to a new rule.

By incorporating these simple, relationship-building conversations, you are helping your child develop essential social-emotional skills like empathy, responsibility, and conflict resolution—skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.

If you have any questions about the restorative practices we use at school, please don't hesitate to reach out!

Character Trait Of The Month

Throughout the year, staff will be recognizing students who demonstrate different character traits each month. At the end of each month, teachers will select one student from their class who has best exemplified that month's trait to be celebrated and awarded a certificate in recognition of their character.

November's Character Trait: Gratitude

We are building a culture of gratitude at school, and you can help reinforce it at home! Try these simple, powerful habits with your family:

  1. Share "Three Good Things": At dinner or bedtime, ask your child to name three positive things that happened that day—big or small. This simple routine shifts focus toward the good.

  2. Be Specific with Thanks: When you thank your child or another family member, make it specific. Instead of just "Thanks," try, "Thank you for putting away the dishes; I really appreciate your help." This models genuine appreciation.

  3. Acknowledge the Effort: When your child receives a gift or help, encourage them to focus on the kindness and effort of the giver, not just the item itself. A quick, spontaneous "thank you" is the goal!

Brident Dental Screenings – December 4th

We’re excited to welcome Brident Dental back to our campus on Wednesday, December 4, for free oral health screenings! Screenings will take place from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM, and each child’s screening will take approximately 4 minutes.

  • A licensed doctor will conduct a basic oral screening, including tooth brushing.
  • Screening results will be shared with the school and families within 48 hours.
