Reminders for the This Week

Please remember that school starts at 8:20am. All students are expected in their classrooms at this time.

Please send a water bottle with your student if you would like your student to have access to water throughout the day. Please refrain from sending your student to school with juice. Students are able to get juice at breakfast and lunch in the cafeteria, but it is not allowed in the classrooms.

Please remember to send your students to school wearing their uniform clothes and sneakers each day. Students should also have a change of clothes in their backpacks in the case of an accident.

Please remember to send in excuses when your student is out sick.

We understand that things happen and transportation changes occur. Please let your students teacher or the front office know of any transportation changes before 2:30pm. Last minute transportation changes make it difficult for your student's teachers to get your student where they need to be for dismissal in a timely and effective manner.

Coming up:

Ms. Flanagin: Reading Specialist

From Ms. Flanagin our Reading Specialist

A list of high frequency words may be coming home with your student if they have been struggling with these words. Please practice this EVERY night.

It is a great time to work on your child's reading fluency. To do this, have your student read the same passage or story several times. This helps with students being able to read familiar words in a fluent manner, which can assist in reading and oral comprehension as well as their oral language skills.

What we learned this past week:

-We continued our unit in fairy tales and poetry.

How to Help at Home:

High frequency words/ heart words students should know how to spell and read:

It is incredibly important that your student is able to read and spell these words. We are seeing that students that do not know them, are having their reading fluency impeded.

was, said, they, their, there, were, where, any, many, want, walk, talk, very, does, would, could, should, my, by, who, one, once, two, been, into, goes, about, because

We add new words to this list each week, if your student can fluently read and spell a word. At the end of the year students should be able to read and spell 125 High Frequency words (including the "heart words" or irregularly spelled words.)

Please work with your students on how to read an analog clock and how to count coins.

In first grade we practice telling time to the hour and half hour.

Students also should know the value of a penny, nickel, dime, and quarter. Students should know how many of each coin it takes to make a dollar, and how to skip count to add these up.

High Frequency Word List:

Students should be able to read and spell 120 words on this list by the end of first grade.

Each quarter the amount that the student is graded on goes up. For quarter 2, students were graded on if they were able to read and write 64 high frequency words.
