Principal's Message
NEWSLETTER WEEK 7, TERM 3, 2026
A lot has gone on over the last week, including chess tournaments, the Tough Guy and Gal Challenge, Fluoro Golf, and the first of our Strengthening Partnerships meetings. Thank you to everyone who helped make these happen! We are indeed very lucky to have so many parents who are prepared to put their hands up to help.
On Monday night, our dance group competed in the Dance NZMade Competition at the Sir Howard Morrison Centre. Our girls have been practicing for a long time to perfect their performance, and wow, they were spectacular on performance night! They are now the Rotorua Year 3–6 Dance NZMade group CHAMPIONS. Emma Schimanski is the Year 6 Solo Champ, Isla Rennie is the Year 4 Champion, and together they are the Year 3–6 Duo champions. Well done to everyone who danced in this competition! Special thanks to Adele Rennie for coaching the dancers. Many thanks also to Charlotte Schimanski and Ranolf Pharmacy, whose generous sponsorship enabled us to provide the entry fee, costuming and props for the dancers.
We would like to invite you to join us for our next Strengthening Partnerships meeting. We are gathering ideas to further strengthen our partnership with whānau and the wider community. The meeting will take place TONIGHT, Wednesday, 2 September at 5:30 pm in the school hall. We warmly welcome you to come along!
Our next School Parish Mass is coming up on Sunday, 13 September. We look forward to bringing our whole community together and hope to see many of our students and families there. We want as many children there as possible. It is an awesome celebration, and you will be amazed at the children’s singing. Please ensure students wear their full school uniform.

Attendance Update - Supporting Regular School Attendance
The Ministry of Education expects students to attend school every day it is open, with a goal of missing fewer than 5 days per term (approximately 90% attendance or higher).
In line with Ministry requirements, schools are now required to send attendance emails to parents and caregivers when a student has been absent for 5 days (less chance of success), 10 days (hard to make progress), and 15 days or more (very hard to make progress) within the term. These emails will be automatically generated by our student management system.
Please be aware that ALL absences are included in these totals. This means that even when absences are due to illness or other justified reasons, they still contribute to the overall attendance record, and we are still required to send attendance emails when applicable.
We recognise that families do their very best to support their children's wellbeing, and we understand that illness and unavoidable circumstances do occur. We also sincerely appreciate families keeping their children at home when they are unwell, as this helps to protect the health of others in our school community.
If you have any questions regarding this new requirement for absences, please contact: Sylvia Dunkley, Deputy Principal (sylviad@stmarysrotorua.school.nz)

Director of Religious Studies
Tōtara 8 is so excited to host The Nativity of Mary Liturgy tomorrow at 12:15 pm, and you are all warmly invited to join us! This special feast day on September 8th celebrates the birthday of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Long ago, Mary was born to her loving parents, Saint Joachim and Saint Anne, who had prayed for a child for a very long time. Her birth was a wonderful gift of hope for the whole world! Pope Francis reminds us that God loves to use "little things and humble things to do great works," showing us that even small beginnings can change the world. Pope Leo XIV also shared that Mary acts like a caring mother who "always wants to walk at our side" to love and help us every day. One way to celebrate this special day is by lighting a candle near a picture of Mary and praying one decade of the rosary(10 Hail Marys) together as a family. You could even let the kids take turns leading the prayers.
Our next School Parish Mass is coming up on Sunday, September 13th. We're looking forward to bringing our whole community together and hope to see lots of our students and families there!
Enjoy the rest of your week.
God bless
Lorna Dobson
