Enriching and Strengthening Family Life Through Education and Play

The Weymouth Child Family Community Center provides support to families from birth through school age. We provide access to comprehensive services, child development information, and educational opportunities to parents and caregivers. Our playgroups and programs are designed to raise awareness on the importance of family engagement while teaching important literacy, STEM and school readiness skills. As a parent or caregiver, you are your child's first and most important teacher! We are here to support you in this role!

Weymouth CFCE Strengthens Families:

1.Each family is unique and all families represent diverse structures.

2.Diversity is expressed and experienced at multiple levels.

3.Building a respectful, trusting, and reciprocal relationship is the shared responsibility.

4.Families are their child’s first and best advocate.

5. Family engagement must be equitable.

Holidays: Strategies for Success

While the holiday season is filled with enjoyable activities,

events and traditions, it can also be a hectic and stressful

time. Travel, shopping, loud music, bright lights, unfamiliar

food, and busy schedules can turn typical routines upside

down! The disruption to routine can be particularly difficult for children who

depend on routine and predictability to engage in appropriate behavior.

The following tips will help ensure that the holiday season is enjoyable for you and your child.

Dialogic Reading

What is Dialogic Reading?

How we read to preschoolers is as important as how frequently we read to them. The Stony Brook Reading and Language Project has developed a method of reading to preschoolers that we call dialogic reading.

When most adults share a book with a preschooler, they read and the child listens. In dialogic reading, the adult helps the child become the teller of the story. The adult becomes the listener, the questioner, the audience for the child. No one can learn to play the piano just by listening to someone else play. Likewise, no one can learn to read just by listening to someone else read. Children learn most from books when they are actively involved.

Dialogic Reading: An Effective Way to Read Aloud with Young Children | Reading Rockets

Dialogic reading works. Children who have been read to dialogically are substantially ahead of children who have been read to traditionally on tests of language development. Children can jump ahead by several months in just a few weeks of dialogic reading.

Story/Time Playgroup Story/Time Playgroup

Story Time Playgroup helps your child's development in many ways.

  • Storytime has many benefits for children other than promoting early literacy and language development. It can help develop their concentration, social skills, communication skills, and encourages their imagination and creativity.

  • Play based learning recognizes that children learn best through active engagement and exploration in meaningful and enjoyable content. As children play, they engage their imagination, take risks and learn problem solving to support their development.

  • A music- rich experience for children of singing, listening and moving bring serious benefits to children as they progress to more formal learning.

Gross Motor Development Gross Motor Development

Both our Hop Skip & Jump program as well as our Just Play E.I. help your child to develop their large muscle groups and work on their balance and coordination.

Physical development

  • Gross motor skills help children develop their posture, balance, and coordination. They also help children learn to move smoothly and efficiently from one position to another.

  • Gross motor skills involve the large muscles in the arms, legs, and torso. Some examples of gross motor skills include:

  • Standing

  • Walking

  • Running

  • Sitting upright

  • Jumping

  • Twisting your torso

  • Bending over

  • Moving or twisting your neck

  • Raising your arms and hands

  • You can support your child's gross motor development with a mix of indoor and outdoor activities. For example, you can provide obstacle courses for crawling infants and sports for older children.
