Updates From The Principal
Hello NRMS Families,
And we are back! Overall, we have had a wonderful start to the year. Of course, each year comes with a new set of challenges. We want to sincerely apologize for the technical glitch with the new system for alerting parents when a student is absent. I, like you, am hopeful that this issue has now been remedied by our IT department.
The first few days of school have been focused on getting students back into routines, getting to know new teachers and peers, and establishing clear expectations. Here at NRMS, respect and kindness rule the day and help us keep everyone safe in a welcoming environment for learning. One theme this year is helping students make a shift from being a passenger to being part of the crew. What this means for us is that students take on more ownership in their education. We will help students develop systems to track their assignments, monitor their progress, and ask for extra help or extra time when they need it.
We also hope to provide students with more voice and choice in their education as well as include more fun and school spirit at the middle school this year. To that end, today we introduced students to our new House system that will officially kick off later this month. Every student and staff member has been assigned to one of four Houses: Hurricane, Tornado, Tsunami, or Blizzard. Students will stay in their assigned House for their middle school years. Students can earn points for their House by exhibiting the ROCKS values, completing assignments, attendance, school spirit, and more. It is a fun way to recognize when students do the right thing and have some friendly competition as each House competes for the coveted Nauset Rocks House Cup that we will award each June.
For 8th graders, we surveyed the class today about their preferences for field trips to take this year. 8th graders will also have an opportunity to serve as House captains. We hope to see all of the 8th graders at tonight's BBQ at 5pm. Families of 8th graders are also invited to attend. 8th graders will paint a mural at the school that will be their mark for the whole school year, as we highlight this high school class of 2030! Our hope is to create additional ways to make the 8th grade year a special one for students.
Athletics start next week. The late bus runs start next week. We are back and excited for the new year.
