Newsletter Week 5 Term Three
19th August 2026
Principal's Message
WEEK 5 TERM 3 2025
Mālō e lelei
It is Tonga Language Week (Uike Kātoanga'i 'o e lea faka-Tonga), and it is celebrated from August 16 to August 22, 2026. The official theme for 2026 is Ko 'etau hiva, ko e fe'unu mahu'inga ia ki he mo'ui 'a e Tonga; Our music is a vital strand of our Tongan culture.
The countdown is on, with spring only two weeks away. At the end of this week, we will be halfway through the term. It’s incredible how quickly time goes. I would like to thank you for your support in sending your child to school ready to learn.
Thanks to Lorna Dobson, our DRS and the team for organising the Assumption Mass last Friday. Again, the singing was great. Our school choir, under the tutelage of Lorette Tiedt, makes a real impact on the school's singing, so thanks, Lorette, for the work you do with the choir, which meets every second week for practice.
It is great to see the learning in classrooms that are Knowledge Rich Units, and the curriculum area this term is Science. You can see the work children are doing in this area on our Facebook page:
The parish will be running a Baptism Course for children aged 7 and older. If you would like your child to be baptised, you must register by Friday, 21 August. Classes start on Tuesday, 25 August. You can use this link to enrol: St. Mary of the Cross MacKillop Parish - Baptism
Young Vinnies will be serving hot chocolate again this term on Wednesday mornings. The children can bring a can or a gold coin donation in exchange for a hot chocolate.
Young Vinnies have a Youth-sized All Whites Jersey that has been signed by the All White’s team. They are raffling this awesome jersey. The tickets are $3.00 each or $5.00 for two. The money raised will be donated to the church towards their roof. We are hoping to get one of the fish plaques for Vinnie's Youth 2026. Tickets can be purchased from the school office or the money can be given to your child’s teacher.
Have a great week
David

Attendance Update - Supporting Regular School Attendance
The Ministry of Education expects students to attend school every day it is open, with a goal of missing fewer than 5 days per term (approximately 90% attendance or higher).
In line with Ministry requirements, schools are now required to send attendance emails to parents and caregivers when a student has been absent for 5 days (less chance of success), 10 days (hard to make progress), and 15 days or more (very hard to make progress) within the term. These emails will be automatically generated by our student management system.
Please be aware that ALL absences are included in these totals. This means that even when absences are due to illness or other justified reasons, they still contribute to the overall attendance record, and we are still required to send attendance emails when applicable.
We recognise that families do their very best to support their children's wellbeing, and we understand that illness and unavoidable circumstances do occur. We also sincerely appreciate families keeping their children at home when they are unwell, as this helps to protect the health of others in our school community.
If you have any questions regarding this new requirement for absences, please contact: Sylvia Dunkley, Deputy Principal (sylviad@stmarysrotorua.school.nz)

Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption! Despite a few minor technical hiccups, our wonderful children carried on with confidence, and their singing was absolute magic. We are so proud of them!
In week 7, K4 and T8 will be hosting the Nativity of Mary Liturgy. Everyone is welcome to join us.
Save the date! Our next School Parish Mass is coming up on Sunday, September 13th. We're looking forward to bringing our whole community together and hope to see lots of our students and families there!
Well done to our students for completing a rich unit of learning all about the Assumption! As a school proudly named after Mary, the Mother of God, this feast holds a very special place in our hearts.
To bring this learning to life, we invite you to visit our special Mary Garden a peaceful spot on our grounds designed for reflection, prayer, and quiet moments. We warmly encourage our families to stop by together, explore the garden, and let your children share everything they've learned about Mary's love and grace. As part of this celebration, our Year 4 classes will be visiting the Mary Garden this week to pray a decade of the Rosary and lay flowers to honor Mary.
Would you like to have your child baptised? Last days for enrolments are this Friday 21st August.
