Dr. Allen's Message ✍🏻
As the school year comes to a close, students eagerly anticipate the arrival of summer. The final weeks are often filled with excitement and nostalgia—goodbyes to friends and teachers, end-of-year projects, and the joy of knowing a long break is just around the corner. With the last bell, backpacks are tossed aside, and the freedom of summer begins. For many, this means sunny days, sleeping in, time with friends, vacations, and a well-deserved break from homework and early mornings. It's a time to relax, explore new interests, and recharge before the next school year begins.
If you want to keep up with academics during the summer, you can make it fun and low-pressure. Here are some creative ways families can help kids keep learning:
Daily Reading Time – Set aside 20–30 minutes a day for reading books of their choice. Audiobooks count too!
Fun Workbooks – Use grade-level summer bridge workbooks that mix reading, math, and writing activities.
Math in Real Life – Practice math through cooking (measuring ingredients), shopping (adding prices), or games like Yahtzee or Uno.
Writing Journals – Encourage kids to keep a summer journal, write postcards, or create short stories or comics.
Educational Apps & Games – Use learning apps like Prodigy, Khan Academy Kids, or Epic! for fun screen time.
Library Programs – Many libraries offer summer learning activities, storytimes, and free resources.
STEM Projects – Try simple experiments, build with LEGO, or use kits to explore science and engineering.
Learn a New Skill – Teach typing, coding, or even basic money skills through interactive platforms.
Field Trips with Learning Goals – Visit museums, farms, or historical sites and ask questions or do a follow-up activity.
Theme Weeks – Have weeks focused on topics like space, animals, or weather—include books, crafts, and experiments.
