Kindergarten Newsletter
February
Important Information
Hydration is very important. Please send a bottle with water (preferably in a thermos) daily. Make sure it has your child's name written on it. Drinking from the water fountain is not healthy for our little kindergarteners when unsupervised. We have had several students getting sick.
Lunch time is from 10:50 am to 11:30 am. Please join us on Mondays only to eat lunch with your child. Remember to take pictures only of your child. We go back to class by 11:30, please plan accordingly and get to school on time. Students can not take food with them.
Make sure you check the lunch menu daily, a lot of our students are not eating anything because they don't like the school lunch. Also, a lot of lunchables are being tossed because the students say that they don't like them. Please talk to your child about their food preferences. Do not send snacks in lunch boxes, some students are not lining up for a tray, and end upr eating only snacks for lunch. Please send the snacks in zip-lock bags.
Assignments for the month
Reading - Lectura
We continue working on fiction stories focusing on the characters and the setting, and the plot of the story (identifying the beginning, middle and end).
We will identify the main idea and the details that support it when reading informational texts (non-fiction stories).
Writing - Escritura
This month we will continue with informative writing, learning how to research and write facts about a given topic.
Please make sure your child practice handwriting, and stretching sounds as they write. Practice sight words daily to facilitate their writing and reading fluency.
Phonics - English
- IIsolate beginning sound. For example: mat. This sentence has the /m/ sound at the beginning. Give your child a word and have them recognize the first sound they hear.
- Isolate final sound . For example: log. This sentence has the /g/ sound at the end. Give your child a word and have them recognize the last sound they hear.
- Blending phonemes into words. Blending means to combine 2 or more sounds to form a word. In this case, you might give your child the sounds /b/ /o/ /x/ to form the word box.
- Please continue to work with letter names and sounds. Use flash cards to assist with learning letters, making sure the cards are not in ABC order.
- Numbers 0-50 - Continue practicing counting forwards and backwards, and identifying numbers up to 50, move to 100 if your child is ready.
- Addition of numbers that add up to 10 - Addition relates to composing but in a story mode. Give your child word problems (story problems) including numbers that add up to 10. For example: I had 3 stickers and my sister gave me 3 more. How many stickers to I have now. Start your stories with numbers that add up to 5 and move on if mastered.
- Subtraction of numbers - Subtraction relates to decomposing but in a story mode. Give your child word problems (story problems) including numbers subtracting from 10. For example: I have 5 cookies and I ate 4. How many cookies do I have left now.
Science - Ciencias
- Seasons - Review seasons and understand the pattern that they follow. Students must understand that the order does not change; for example, spring always follows winter.
- Day and night - Understand why we have day and night, and that the sun does not disappear or goes away. Students will learn that the Earth rotates making day and night possible. Students need to be able to describe objects we see in the day sky (clouds, blue skies, rainbows, moon) and objects in the night sky (stars, moon, clouds, dark sky).
- Living and non-living - Students will discuss the differences between living and non-living things.
Social Studies - Estudios Sociales
- Weather - Review how the weather affect how people dress, and what they do.
