CURRICULUM UPDATE
Music with Ms. Yee
Congratulations to our young musicians for their outstanding performances at the end of the year grade level concerts!
Students enjoyed exploring a variety of musical traditions from Asia and the Pacific Islands this week. Read about some of their favorite learning activities below.
Grade K and 1: Students read a picture book titled “The Chinese Violin” by Madeleine Thien. The story was accompanied by an erhu, a traditional two stringed instrument. They enjoyed watching a musician play the erhu while performing the classic folk song “Jasmine Flower”. Next week they’ll learn a traditional dragon dance from Indonesia.
Grade 2 and 3: Students learned a Maori folk song from New Zealand titled “Epo I Tai”. Second graders added body percussion patterns to accompany the song while third graders created rhythmic patterns using sticks, incorporating both playing and tossing movements. Next week they learn about a genre of Indian film music called Bollywood.
Grade 4 and 5: Students were introduced to Tinikling, a traditional dance from the Philippines. They were actively engaged in moving between two bamboo poles, while following rhythmic patterns. Movements involved sliding, hopping and intricate footwork. Next week they will learn a fun partner game from Japan.
