Dr. Dibble Ignites Learning!
Upper school Chemistry classes produced acetylene gas by reacting calcium carbide with water. This powerfully explosive gas was used to propel various objects from a cannon built out of PVC pipe. Students learned about the energy stored in molecules as well as what it means to be a clean fuel.
Measured Approach
Students in Mrs. Harrison's ninth-grade Biology classes are learning how trees play an important role in the carbon cycle by storing carbon in their trunks, branches, and leaves. To explore this concept, students measured the circumference of trees at chest height using a simple tape measure. This measurement helps estimate the tree’s diameter, which can then be used to calculate its biomass—the total amount of living material the tree contains. Since about half of a tree’s biomass is made up of carbon, these calculations allow students to estimate how much carbon each tree is storing. This hands-on activity helps students understand how trees act as natural carbon sinks, removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it safely in their tissues, which supports a healthier planet.
Students have taken this activity a step further to determine their own carbon footprints and how they can make changes in their personal lives to help reduce their impact on the environment.
