Teacher of the Year Celebration...
This week TSD honored 49 AMAZING teachers who were nominated to be Teacher of the Year! These teachers go above and beyond for their students every day. We are so proud of Mrs. Busa and Mrs. Maliepaard for earning this recognition. Congratulations to Mrs. Maliepaard for earning the Troy School District Overall Elementary Teacher of the Year, whooohooo!!!
Millage...
The Oakland County Enhancement Millage will be on the August 4, 2026 ballot. If approved, each public school district and eligible public school academies would receive approximately $781 per student annually. This proposal would cost about $300 per year for a $400,000 home ($200,000 taxable value).
Districts would use the funding for a variety of reasons. Here are some examples on how these general fund dollars would be spent:
Staff recruitment and retention
Stabilizing general fund budgets
Maintaining or reducing class sizes, where possible
Expanding professional development
Enhancing student wellness supports
Improving safety and security
Maintaining and strengthening district programming
Visit the Enhancement Millage website for more information and a tax calculator.

5th Grade Math Updates...
Dear Fifth Grade Families,
We would like to provide you with an update to our middle school math course options. Within our middle schools there are many strong math pathways available for students. Our priority is ensuring that every student is placed in a math course where they feel challenged, supported, and confident. We encourage families to consider their student's strengths, readiness, interests, and learning needs when making decisions about course placement. In the 2026-27 school year, Troy School District will be piloting IM Accelerated Math 6/7 as a new option in all middle school buildings.
All 5th grade families will have the choice to select from one of the options below:
Option 1: Math 6
Math 6 establishes a critical foundation in proportional reasoning by exploring ratios, unit rates, and percentages through visual representations like double number lines and tape diagrams. In this problem-based course, students transition from elementary arithmetic to middle school algebra by developing a deep understanding of fraction division and expressions with variables. Students also expand their mathematical world to include signed numbers and statistical variability. This course provides the time and space for students to build a conceptual understanding of mathematics, ensuring they are ready for the complexities of Grade 7.
Topics covered in Math 6:
Area and Surface Area, Introducing Ratios, Unit Rates and Percentages, Dividing Fractions, Arithmetic in Base Ten, Expressions and Equations, Rational Numbers, Data Sets and Distributions.
Math 6 Pathway
Grade 6 – Math 6 Grade 7 – Math 7 Grade 8 – Math 8 or Honors Algebra 1
Option 2: (NEW) Accelerated Math 6/7
Families may choose to enroll their child in Accelerated Math 6/7. This course is a rigorous, fast-paced course that compresses all Grade 6 standards and significant portions of Grade 7 into a single academic year. In this problem-based course, students master ratio reasoning to engage with complex proportional relationships, circle geometry, and the four operations with rational numbers. This pathway is designed for students who demonstrate high mathematical independence and the ability to synthesize new concepts with minimal repetition. It serves as the launchpad for a two-year sequence that culminates in Honors Algebra 1 by the 8th grade.
Topics covered in Accelerated Math 6/7:
Area and Surface Area, Introducing Ratios, Unit Rates and Percentages, Dividing Fractions, Arithmetic in Base Ten, Expressions and Equations, Proportional Relationships, Rational Number Arithmetic, Percent Increase and Decrease, Data Sets and Distributions, Probability and Sampling.
Accelerated Math 6/7 Pathway
Grade 6 – Accelerated Math 6/7 Grade 7 – Accelerated Math 7/8 Grade 8 – Honors Algebra 1
Option 3: Math 6 Test-Out
The Math 6 test-out process allows current 5th grade students who are ready to demonstrate mastery of the 6th grade math standards to progress to an accelerated math pathway in middle school by testing out of Math 6. This option is completely optional and is intended for families who feel it may be a good fit for their child. Students take the test-out exam at their elementary school, and those who pass the test will skip Math 6 and begin Math 7 in 6th grade. Please know that for students who have registered for this assessment, no further action is required.
Math 6 Test-Out Pathway
Grade 6 – Math 7 Grade 7 – Honors Algebra 1 Grade 8 – Honors Geometry
Next Steps:
All 5th grade families will receive information about each math course, directions for course selection, and information on student data to consider at the following 5th Grade Parent Nights (hosted at your student’s future middle school):
Baker Middle School – May 5 at 5pm
Boulan Park Middle School – May 7 at 6:30pm
Larson Middle School – May 6 at 7pm
Smith Middle School – May 6 at 6pm
Math data for your student will be provided to families via email after May 11th. Families will be invited to make a course selection for their students in PowerSchool between May 11 and May 26.
Questions?
If you have questions, please attend the upcoming middle school parent events or reach out to your student’s middle school counseling team.
FAQs
What is required of Accelerated Math 6/7 students? Accelerated Math 6/7 compacts Math 6 and the majority of Math 7 into a shorter time period, without skipping material. This means that students interested in accelerating math must be prepared to encounter new content at a faster pace. Accelerated Math 6/7 is best suited for students who consistently engage with extension and enrichment materials provided in the regular curriculum and demonstrate fluency and understanding in mathematics. Students should anticipate having nightly homework.
What is the same? In both Accelerated 6/7 and Math 6, each lesson starts with an invitation to the mathematics, followed by a deep study of targeted concepts and procedures, and ends with an opportunity to consolidatelearning through direct instruction by the teacher. Students then apply their learning by engaging in practice problems. This structure continues throughout each unit and through the course.
What is different? In order to address all the grade 6, 7, and 8 standards in two years, lessons have been compressed. This makes the Accelerated 6/7 a fast paced and rigorous course.
What if I already signed up for Math 6 Test-Out? No action is required. Your student will take Math 6 test-out at their elementary building. Results will be sent to families by May 20.

M-STEP...
Dear Costello Families,
Our students will soon participate in the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP). The M-STEP provides a snapshot of your child’s learning and helps inform instruction. While it offers useful information, it is only one measure. To fully understand and support your child’s needs, we consider multiple sources, including classroom performance, teacher observations, and other assessments.
MDE Testing Window: April 27 – May 18th
*grades will test within this window for a portion of the day and not necessarily for this entire time frame
Grades Testing: 3rd, 4th, 5th Grades
How You Can Help:
Ensure good sleep routines
Provide healthy breakfasts
Arrive at school on time
Encourage your student to persevere and try their best, this will help them feel proud and confident
Student electronic devices are not to be on students (Smart watches/phones) - these will be collected if they come to school on testing days.
Avoid scheduling appointments during testing
Send your child to school each day with a fully charged Ipad
We strive to create a calm and supportive testing environment and remind students that this is just one way to show what they know. The M-STEP helps to prepare students for standardized testing that they will experience in the years ahead. The teachers will be practice test taking skills leading up to the M-STEP. Below is a link to the MDE website with links to practice tests. To minimize worry, you may want to have your child work through these sample questions.

Construction Traffic...
Lamb Road will be closed at Rochester starting 3/30/2026 until further notice. Vehicle can use Shallowdale for detour. With spring break coming up, is there a way the school can notify the parents about this closure? I assume a lot of parents may use Lamb Road for pickup/dropoff.

Let's All Go...to the Costello Auction...
Dear Costello Families,
For twenty years, the Costello Night Auction has been a special tradition that brings our community together in support of the children who walk our halls every day. It is one of the most important fundraisers for our school, and the funds raised go directly back to supporting our students, classrooms, and the experiences that make Costello such a special place.
A group of dedicated Costello parents has spent months volunteering their time planning this event, gathering donations, and creating a fun evening for our community, all to benefit our kids.
Even if you do not plan to bid on auction items, we still encourage you to attend. Simply showing up supports the event and our school. The night is about more than the auction. It is a chance to connect with other Costello parents, meet new families, and enjoy time with the community that surrounds our children every day. It is also the only Costello fundraiser of the year that is just for adults, making it a rare opportunity for a fun night out while supporting our school.
Many Costello families have already purchased tickets and are looking forward to a great evening together. To give everyone one final opportunity to attend, we have extended the ticket deadline to Sunday, March 8.
Attached are flyers showing just a few of the exciting experiences and items that will be available that night. We truly hope every Costello family will consider being part of this special tradition and supporting the place where our children learn, grow, and create lasting memories.
We would love to see every Costello family represented at this event. When our community shows up for moments like this, it sends a powerful message to our students about how much their school and their experiences matter.
Thank you for continuing to support Costello and the students who make it so special.

Social Worker Appreciation Week!
Your work makes a positive impact on our students, THANK YOU, Ms. Berlin for all that you do.
Breakfast Club...
Fourth and fifth grade buddies have been training this week with Mrs. Marcaccio & Mrs. Wonsowicz. These student leaders will be reading with their kindergarten and first grade partners each morning from 9:10–9:25. During this time, students will:
Practice reading three snap words for the week
Write the three snap words
Read to their buddy while eating breakfast
The goal is to build confidence with high-frequency words while creating positive reading relationships with our older students.
Thank you Mrs. Marcaccio & Mrs. Wonsowicz for giving our students this special opportunity!
Sock Drive...
Mr. McKinney and Mrs. Schwartz's buddy classes are carrying over an idea from Kindness Week. They are collecting new socks for those in need. Ask your students what they learned from the students' presentations.
PTO News...
PTO News...
Hello Costello Community! In the below message you will find information about next year's openings on the PTO as well as information about our upcoming PTO Meeting on March 9th!
March is the month that our PTO accepts nominations for next year’s Board. Our PTO Board is made up of the President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. As of now, these positions have members who have expressed interest and commitment in taking these jobs over for the next school year. However, if you wish to be nominated for any of these Board positions, you can still do that! Please email Jen Ford at jhutch44@hotmail.com so you can be added to our nominations for the April meeting. Nominations will close at the end of the April PTO meeting which will be held on April 13th. Voting will take place at our May PTO meeting which will be on May 11th. All Costello parents are automatically voting members of our PTO.
We are looking for additional volunteers to join the following committees for the 2026-2027 school year:
Staff Treats: Bidisha Goswani is the amazing PTO member who is committed to heading up this position next year, but it would be great to have two people working on it! In this role, you will plan monthly treats for the staff, as well as coordinate lunches or dinners for parent-teacher conferences for them twice a year. You will be helping with the overall yearly planning of treats, pick up and drop off of lunches, dinners and treats as well as set up and clean up after. The treats are a mix of donations from community businesses and PTO funded treats.
Costello Auction: Jenna DeCarolis and Rachel Mistretta are our wonderful auction chairs! We are looking for more committee members to join this well-established team. As a committee member you would be helping to collect donations as well as helping to plan and execute this special night. This is Costello’s second largest fundraiser and a very fun way to get more involved.
We are so thankful for the Costello community! The Costello community continues to pull together year after year and your support, whether that be given through attending an event, planning, donating, sending in needed items or volunteering for part of an event, is what makes it all work. This is a very special community with a strong PTO that serves our students and teachers well. It takes many hands to continue this work, and we appreciate your consideration for the above opportunities! If you would like more information about any of the above positions please email me at: jhutch44@hotmail.com
Upcoming March PTO Meeting:
We hope you can make it to the next Costello PTO meeting this Monday, March 9th at 7:00 in the Media Center. Childcare will be provided, and the link to the virtual option to join is below. We hope to see you all there!

CONGRATULATIONS MRS. MALIEPAARD!!!
We had a wonderful surprise announcement yesterday from the district Teacher of the Year Committee…
Mrs. Maliepaard has been named the Troy School District ELEMENTARY Teacher of the Year! 🎉
This is an incredibly special honor and so very well deserved. After many years of nominations, Mrs. Maliepaard was recognized with this distinguished award for consistently exemplifying excellence and dedication in everything she does for our students and our school community.
She was completely surprised when our Superintendent, Dr. Machesky, along with Central Office staff and her family, entered her classroom during Number Corner to present her with the award.
To celebrate this amazing achievement, students lined the hallways to cheer and congratulate her — a moment filled with pride, joy, and appreciation for a teacher who gives so much to others every single day.
We are SO proud of you, Mrs. Maliepaard!

Safety Update...
Parents and Guardians,
After an extensive evaluation of numerous companies, TSD is pleased to partner with Pickmykid/VisitU for our new visitor management/attendance system. Under the new process, all visitors will be required to present a valid photo ID upon arrival to our buildings. When you visit Costello you will find a kiosk located in the main entrance lobby. Visitors will start the sign process by selecting the visitor check in tab. This will prompt you to scan the back of your driver’s license or state issued identification by placing it vertically, bar code facing up into the card holder on the back of the iPad. Once your identification is scanned it will prompt you to take a photo. After the photo is taken you will be asked to enter the employee that you are visiting or the location you are going to in the building.
If you do not have a driver’s license or state issued identification, you will have to press the airphone button for assistance. The airphone is located in the vicinity of the kiosk.
The system will then print out a visitor badge in the front office. You will be buzzed into the building and then issued your badge. The badge must be worn on the outermost garment at all times. Upon leaving the building, please exit through the main office and proceed to the kiosk for checkout. Select the visitor check out tab and scan the QR code from your badge. This will automatically check you out.
See visuals for signing in and out of the kiosk. This system is designed to protect visitor information through encryption, data integrity checks, and secure storage. It ensures that sensitive data is not stored in a way that could be accessed by unauthorized individuals.
Downloading the mobile application will allow you to use your mobile device to check in at any of our schools and will also allow you to do attendance for your student.
Attached are the directions for downloading the mobile application.
It should be noted that this is being piloted at Costello and the High schools only at this time. If you have other students at other buildings in the district besides Costello or the high schools, the attendance function will not work.
If you use the mobile application to schedule an absence in the future you will be notified that it is approved for the date that you submit it on. Do not worry, this is being worked out with the vendor.
As always parents will still be able to phone in attendance, but use of the mobile application is highly recommended.
The support team at Pickmykid/VisitU is available 24 hours a day. If you need assistance of have any questions, contact them at E success@pikmykid.com W www.pikmykid.com

PTO Sponsored Assembly...
The interactive Young Author’s Writing Assembly was a huge hit for our K–5 students! This special opportunity was made possible for Costello thanks to your generous donations — from all of our students and staff, THANK YOU!
This unique experience was led by a professional mime who had students completely engaged from start to finish. A highlight of the day was when the mime invited Luke Gorman to assist, Luke had the entire crowd laughing with his confidence and spontaneous acting skills! What a great sport you were, Luke!!
After the first assembly, students returned to their classrooms to write their own stories for the performer. During the writing time, the mime visited classrooms to answer questions and help spark ideas. Once the stories were collected and read, the day concluded with a second assembly where the mime brought selected student stories to life on stage. Watching the excitement on students’ faces as they saw their own writing performed was truly unforgettable!

advance to 14 minutes to see the Cardinals
You sounded amazing, a terrific performance, well done 5th graders!
Lessons Learned...
I am meeting with buddy classes over this month and next to share the lessons I learned from running my first marathon in November. Ideal way to tie in new year's resolutions and goal setting. Ask your child what he/she learned, remembers from this visit.
- How did Dr. DiPonio use the Cardinal Traits during her training?
- What small steps can you take to achieve your big goals?
- What were some unexpected things that Dr. DiPonio ran into?
- About how many laps around the bus loop is 1 mile? (19)
- If a marathon is 26.2 miles, about how many loops would you need to make around the bus loop to equal a marathon? (138,336)
- Why is it important to tell others what your goal is? How can an accountability partner can help you reach your goal?
- If you stick with your plan and do the small stuff you will be able to accomplish your big goals, what is a goal/new year's resolution do you want to accomplish?
- Share goals with your children that you have set, how you struggled and succeeded and what you learned along the way.
MLK Day of Service...
Testing Updates - NWEA
Dear Families,
Over the past few years, the Troy School District has implemented the NWEA MAP growth 6+ Mathematics assessment in our middle schools, and this year we have expanded this math only assessment. While this work remains ongoing, we are encouraged by the valuable insights it provides, helping us better understand how each student is growing academically in mathematics.
Based on this progress, we will expand NWEA MAP growth Math testing to include students from third grade through fifth grade. It’s important to note that MAP growth is not a test of mastery. Rather, it is a personalized, computer-adaptive assessment designed to measure each student’s current level of understanding and track their academic growth over time.
Our first NWEA mathematics assessment will be happening next week either Tuesday the 20th or during the half days in January; the 21st, 22nd and 23rd. This will help us establish a baseline that shows how students are performing in relation to peers across the country. This baseline helps teachers and schools identify strengths and areas for growth, while also giving the district valuable insight into how our math programming is meeting students’ needs. By examining this information alongside classroom assessments and instructional data, we can make informed decisions about curriculum, resources, and support systems to ensure every learner continues to grow.
Elementary level NWEA Mathematics MAP assessments will be administered this winter, as well as this spring. The Math test typically taking 45-60 minutes. This assessment provides teachers and administrators with valuable information about student growth. When combined with unit assessments, checkpoints, and daily classroom interactions, this data helps teachers further target instruction to both extend and support learners, while also guiding district efforts to continually strengthen our math programs.
Unlike the state-mandated M-STEP, which measures achievement once a year, MAP focuses on academic growth, giving us a clearer picture of how students develop throughout the school year and beyond.
Families play an essential role in supporting their children’s success. We encourage discussing math in everyday life, ensuring adequate rest and nutrition before testing, and fostering a positive mindset about the assessments as tools for growth.
For more information, please visit NWEA Parent Toolkit, which includes helpful resources and tips for supporting your child’s learning. Additionally, you can watch this short informational video to learn more about MAP growth.
We remain committed to partnering with families and educators to ensure all learners achieve their individual potential.

TSD K-8 Literacy Adoptions
Dear Troy School District Families,
We hope you had a restful winter break! As we begin 2026, we want to share important updates regarding recent Michigan Department of Education (MDE) legislation and how it will shape literacy instruction in our district.
In 2024, Governor Whitmer signed Public Act 146, commonly referred to as the K–12 Literacy and Dyslexia Laws. This legislation is designed to improve literacy rates across Michigan through the Science of Reading and includes requirements for professional learning, assessments, interventions, and curriculum selection.
One immediate component of PA 146 is K–5 reading curriculum selection. On December 18, MDE released its initial list of evidence-based, class-wide elementary reading curricula. The State created the list to indicate curricula which are aligned to the Science of Reading and likely to produce desired literacy outcomes. This list will be evolving with additional opportunities for publishers to submit their curricula for review. Our K-5 reading Units of Study were not submitted for review by the publisher and accordingly are not included on the current MDE-approved list.
While we are proud of our strong academic results—from having the top-scoring cohort of 3rd grade readers on the MSTEP in Oakland County to having many schools recognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools—we are also committed to continuous improvement; therefore, the Troy School District will pilot elementary reading curricula from the MDE-approved list during the 2026–2027 school year, with full implementation of the selected resource in 2027–2028. To ensure continuity of learning, our middle schools will follow the same timeline for adopting new reading and writing curricula. We are confident that high-quality literacy instruction will continue throughout the pilot process.
Proposed Timeline for Literacy Adoption:
- Winter 2026 – Collect perception and academic data
- Spring 2026 – Develop literacy vision and evaluation criteria
- Fall 2026 – Preview suggested pilot materials
- Fall 2026 – Winter 2027 – Pilot new materials
- Spring 2027 – Recommend new curricula to school board
We have already begun gathering feedback from our teachers and invite you to share your input as well by completing this optional survey. Your perspective is important as we work together to enhance literacy for all Troy students.
In partnership,
David Recker, Director of Teaching & Learning
Kris Griffor, Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Instruction
Christine DiPilato, Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Instruction

I am grateful for the love and support that surrounds our unique Costello Family. Thank you Costello families, for being such a caring community.
Happy Holidays from the Costello Staff!
Thank You Party Volunteers...
We are so glad that it worked out for the holiday parties to happen yesterday. We can't control the weather, but did not want the students to miss out on creating these special memories. We appreciate you adjusting your schedules and for those who stepped up to help. Thank you to our Room Parent Coordinator, Jamie Kaniarz, for all of your coordinating, what a team!!
Today...
Winter Wonderland IS on for today! We are anticipating cold and windy conditions, please be sure your children are dressed for the weather. Upper grade students have a tendency to not dress as warm, please discuss and prepare your children to dress appropriately, thank you!
Our surprise (reindeer) visitors are in route. We keep this part a surprise in case travel impacts their journey to Costello.
We will likely adjust the outdoor activities and move the hot cocoa indoors (students only). Parents are always welcome to the bus loop for this event. THANK YOU, PTO, for making this Costello tradition possible.

The tragic events at Brown University and in Australia, are weighing heavily. So unsettling, for everyone.
At Costello, we remain committed to being a place where every child and family feels safe, valued, and respected. We continue to emphasize our core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, and perseverance, and we reinforce with students that our school is a caring community.
Please know that our staff is always attentive to students’ emotional needs and ready to provide support. If your child expresses concerns or emotions connected to what they may hear we will reassure students and keep routines in place.

PTO Soup & Salad Luncheon - THANK YOU!
What a beautiful display of appreciation and generosity on Monday's soup and salad lunch for the Costello staff! Thank you to Olive Garden in Rochester Hills for donating salad, soup and breadsticks. Thank you to the following families for preparing food:
Brittany Fike
Sarah DeDona
Lauren Brown
Carolin Connelly
Erica Filipucci
Lyubov Kulyk
Jen Ford
Jamie Kaniarz
Ivonne Perez
Han Le Nguyen
(if I missed you, let me know and I will make sure to update)
And thank you to our whole community for supporting the PTO so we can do things like this. Only a small portion of our budget can be spent on things like this, so we wouldn't be able to do it without community sponsors like Olive Garden and parents who take the time to make and buy food and drinks. We are so thankful to the staff for all they do to support our kids! Thank you Jen Ford, PTO President for coordinating these celebrations.
Book Fair...
The Costello Book Fair was a huge success thanks to Mrs. Homrich for organizing and to all of the families who volunteered to help. Happy reading!
Giving Back...
Penny Wars is always a big hit. So proud of all of the different ways our Costello Community gives back. Anushya Pachathu, we are so glad you volunteered to take over this project, we appreciate the graphing and updates for the totals raised. Families, thank you for helping to raise money to support those in need through our Penny Wars this week. The students are on the edge of their seats waiting to hear the final totals. Stay tuned!!
Coaching Kids with Questions...
There are three significant life skills that we want our children to be able to put in place on a regular basis. These skills will help them at every stage of their childhood and beyond. We want them to...
1. be able to be angry, upset or overwhelmed and still make good choices
2. be able to make good choices when others are not okay
3. be able to do things when they don't want to, or it is hard
Which of these struggles do you see your child needing coached on? Try some of the questions below to teach and practice the skill(s) that they need to work on. Consistent practice will help them develop these skills and will create a better parent child relationship.
The goal is to diffuse arguing and help children overcome challenging events such as grocery shopping, doctor appointments, homework, family outings, etc. If we can help prepare kids they will become more confident in managing these situations.
Waking Up
- Will you need 3 minutes or 5 minutes before you get started with your morning routine?
- Do you want me to check back with you in 5 minutes or 10 minutes?
- Do you wan to start with brushing your teeth first or getting dressed first?
- Do you want me to help you with your hair or do you want to do it yourself?
Before School
- Do you want cereal or toast?
- Do you want milk or water?
- Do you want to wear your blue shoes or your red shoes?
After School
- Do you need 10 minutes or 15 minutes of downtime before (homework, chores, practicing piano, etc.)
- Do you want to do your homework in the kitchen or in your room?
- Would you like a banana or an apple for a snack?
Prior to Grocery Trip
- Are we going to get things on the list or not on our list?
- Are you going to ask for candy or remember we are only here for groceries on the list?
- Will you say okay or argue if the answer is "no" to something?
- Will you run in the parking lot or walk?
Random Outing
- Will you use manners like please and thank you or will you grab things and be demanding?
- Will you wait patiently or get frustrated if you need to wait?
- If grandma tells you "no" will you argue with her or calmly say "okay"?
- Will you be kind to others and let others choose too or will you be bossy and always want your way?
- If your sister wants to play something different will you say, "no" or "sure, we can take turns picking"?
-These tips and tricks come from our partnership with the Behavior Intervention Support Team (BIST). Our TSD staff development in October focused on putting practices like this into place in our classrooms-
If you give these a try come back and share your feedback below:
Did the choices help your child stay calm during challenges?

Cardinal Power Ticket Winners!
Usimo, Sully, Ila, Ellie, Audrey & Ava, congratulations!!
Great job being good role models for your classmates!
Bundle Up...
The students have such a great time in the snow and cold weather WHEN they are dressed appropriately. In addition to the basic winter hat, gloves and coat, warm boots and snow pants allow the kids to experience more areas to play. Don't forget to label EVERYTHING!
Shout-out to our teachers, especially in the lower elementary grades! Imagine helping 20+ students navigate snow pants, gloves, scarves, hats, and boots… all while keeping track of which items go in which bag and teaching them to dress themselves independently. When your child comes home with all of their belongings, that is a major accomplishment worth celebrating! Honor their growing responsibility.
And at home… if you find yourself doing all the work for them, remember: they can do it! Consider building more time into getting ready so you can coach instead of dress your child, this make take a bit longer at first, but it pays off and builds their confidence, it truly makes a difference!
PTO Incentive...
Thanks to the generous donations to the Fun Run our PTO was able to purchase this game for our students. One way we use this incentive is during lunch, our noon aides pull names of Cardinal Ticket winners and students get to play during lunch.
Job Embedded Teacher Development...
TSD provides ongoing learning for our teachers from experts in the field. Staff developers lead the work with the students and our teachers. What a great way to build capacity and support our curriculum!
Skating Party...
Thank you to Kristen Northey for planning another fun Skate World for our Cardinals and their families.
Helping Those in Need...
Great conversations to have with your children:
- It's more than just winning a pizza party...talk about what charity means.
- What do you know about the Penny War charities?
- What charity would you pick if it were up to you?
- What coins do you want in your grade level container, why?
- What coins do you want to put in other grade levels, why?
- Truly, everyone wins by helping others...discuss gratefulness.
Thank you Anushya Pachathu for leading this charity!

Name & Notice...
Our children mirror our emotions. When we model—through our actions—what we want to see in our children; such as staying calm, showing perseverance, maintaining focused attention, and offering unconditional love and patience, they are far more likely to act this way too. One simple way to reinforce this is to name and notice the behaviors you’re using so your child can understand and follow your lead.
For example: “When Mommy helped you with your homework, she didn’t have her phone out because she didn’t want to be distracted. Just like that, you need to put your iPad away when it’s time to do your math work or reading.”
Book Fair Details...
Book Fair Purchasing will ALSO be during your Media times the week of 12/8- 12/12.
Late night Thursday 12/11 4-6 pm.
Don’t forget! Create a Book Fair eWallet for your child NOW so they can shop cash-free, worry-free, and independently! It’s easy to set up and easy for others to contribute funds! Start here: Book Fair Homepage

WISHING EVERYONE A WONDERFUL & RELAXING THANKSGIVING!
There is SO much to be thankful for in our Costello community, but here are my top three:
- I am grateful for the countless ways our families come together to create unforgettable experiences for our students. Our energetic PTO Board and PTO Volunteers are simply THE best!!
Elementary school goes by in a flash, and while every stage of growing up is special, nothing compares to the wonder and excitement of these early years. From field trips and the Ball for All, to the Fun Run, Field Day, and so much more, you help make these joyful moments possible. Thank you for volunteering, showing up, and being involved.
- I am grateful for our passionate team of teachers and staff who pour into their own learning so they can be their very best for your children.
Our staff lifts one another up, problem-solves together, and models the same perseverance and collaboration we hope to inspire in our students. Their commitment is at the heart of everything we do.
- And lastly, I am grateful for our students—the reason we do all of this.
Their curiosity, kindness, humor, and determination remind us each day why the work matters. Watching them grow, learn, and show their Cardinal Traits is the greatest gift. They bring energy to our halls, pride to our community, and hope for the future.
As we head into the holiday break, I hope your homes are filled with rest, laughter, and time with the people who matter most.
Happy Thanksgiving, Costello. So thankful for YOU!

International Night...
Dear Costello Families,
International Night was truly magical seeing all 25 countries come to life! It was our biggest turnout yet, we even ran out of passports just after 7 PM, something that has never happened before! Your energy, creativity, and pride in sharing your cultures made the night unforgettable.
International Night simply wouldn’t have been possible without each and every one of you. Thank you for your beautiful decorations, your incredible performances, your delicious food, and most of all: your heart. You made this event meaningful for our entire community, and we cannot wait to do it again next year!
And a special congratulation to our table winner this year: India 🥇
We also want to extend special recognitions to a few countries whose outstanding contributions truly stood out:
Burundi & Congo — For the extraordinary effort of representing two countries and delivering a wonderful cultural performance.
Mexico — For participating in International Night for seven years in a row, showing unmatched dedication and spirit.
Wales & France — For their spectacular table designs, including a 9-foot castle and a beautifully recreated Ratatouille-style restaurant that transported everyone straight to Europe.
Thank you again for making this celebration so special.
Best regards,
Maria, Lilian and Wendi

Cardinal Power Ticket Winners!
Cameron, Noah, Mary, Kennedy, Joshua, Irene, we are so proud of you. Keep showing your Cardinal Traits and being positive leaders for others. Way to go!
What a fulfilling week it has been, filled with so many exciting activities!
A special shout-out goes to all of our families and community members who are currently serving or who have previously served in the military. Our teachers honored Veteran’s Day this week by sharing grade-level lessons on the importance of our veterans and the sacrifices they have made.
At Monday’s PTO meeting, we discussed new prize incentives for our Cardinal Power Ticket winners. As announced, we also talked about how to use the additional funds raised from our Fun Run. The PTO discussed an idea, suggested by some of our 4th graders after the Cardboard Challenge, to purchase new games that students can enjoy when their Cardinal Power Ticket is drawn for demonstrating the Cardinal Power Traits.
There is also some consideration and research in the works on adding turf to the hills on our new playground. At our next PTO meeting in January, we should have more information from the district about the feasibility of turf and whether PTO support would be an option.
We are so grateful to be able to offer our students with many rewarding experiences because of your generosity! Every dollar goes directly back into enhancing our students’ educational experience in many meaningful ways.
Thank you all again!

Cardinal Students & Staff 😀
Dear Costello Staff,
Thank you for allowing us to glimpse the incredible learning happening in your building. From the warm greetings from students, to the engaging tabletop math challenges, and the hallways lined with piece after piece of student writing, it was clear that your curriculum is not just present, but thriving in your daily instruction.
We were especially impressed by the writing on display. The cut-outs, rewrites, and thoughtful revisions all reflected a deep commitment to deep learning and elaboration…wow! The work was truly stunning and a powerful testament to the impact of your teaching. I also loved the red “DRAFT” stamp on some of the pieces😊
Your hard work and dedication are both evident and inspiring. Thank you for all that you do for our Costello students!
Sincerely,
Kris Griffor
Assistant Superintendent Troy School District

Farmer's Market Comes to Costello...
Tomorrow our Food Service Department will host a mini farmer's Market to teach students about locally grown fruits and vegetables. Each grade level will visit the market for 15-20 minutes. Each station will showcase local produce and students are offered a sample of one of the items. Please be sure to reach out to your child's teacher if you have any specific allergy reminders.
1st Grade Music Informance - Mrs. Downer & Ms. Frazier's Classes...
3rd & 1st Grade Writing Celebration!
Writing is so exciting and even more fun when you can share it with others! Students noticed so many ways that their writing is the same even though they are two grade levels apart. They learned revisions happen in all grades. Students reflected on what they are doing well and what they want to work on next.
Trunk or Treat!
Trunk or Treat is this Friday and we needs lots more CANDY! Drop off your candy donations in the vestibule. We are asking each family attending the trunk or treat to donate one bag of candy so there is enough to go around. Looking forward to a great evening!

We All Live Here, We All Help Here:
Teaching ownership, responsibility & pride through "helping
out" around the house
● Who’s job is it, anyway?
● Children:
● My job is to be respectful, responsible and kind. I will follow
adult directions the FIRST TIME, the Adult’s way.
● Adults:
● The adults are in charge. I can trust that they love me no matter
what, and that they will give me what I need. They will teach me
how to do what they have asked me to do.
● Age/Ability
○ Parrot/Partner?
○ Individually capable
○ Mastery by teaching
● Together we WIN (this can enhance unity and connection
within the family, and make it easier for children to do what
we’ve asked when we ask them to do something that is
really difficult or feels really hard)
○ Common living areas are everyone’s responsibility
○ Tackle one of those areas together
■ Kitchen clean-up
■ Living Room Sweep
■ Bathroom beautification
○ Many hands make light work
○ Play music/dance & sing
● Cheese makes everything better
○ Instead of “chore chart”
■ Family responsibilities
○ Volunteer or voluntold?

What a Game!!...let's see your Lions colors tomorrow!
October is Almost Here...
I wanted to take a moment to thank you parents for helping us kick off the school year on such a strong and positive note.
We received a wonderful compliment from a substitute teacher who works in multiple schools across our district and in other districts. She shared how impressed she was with our students’ kindness and respect, noting that this level of behavior truly stood out compared to other schools she visits. What an incredible reflection of our school community!
We know that this doesn’t happen by accident. This comment speaks to the values, expectations, and support you instill at home. Thank you for partnering with us and for reinforcing the Cardinal Traits in your homes. Together, we are building not just strong students, but kind and respectful citizens.

Why is the Truth so HARD?
Rebuilding trust when our children lie
9/25/25
● Remember that Behavior is a Skill: which one is missing?
○ I can’t be okay when I have an overwhelming feeling
○ I can’t be okay when others are not okay (or I perceive they are
not okay)
○ I can’t do something when I don’t want to (or it is hard for me)
● Ask ourselves:
○ Is this repetitious (habitual resistance)?
○ Is it developmentally appropriate for the child to struggle with
telling the truth?
■ This doesn’t excuse being less than truthful, but we might
expect to see this as children begin to develop an
imagination.
○ Is this fear-based, control-based?
○ What does my child “get” out of being dishonest?
● Protection or Punishment:
○ Protection: skill-based
○ “I care so much about you that I’m going to provide incredibly
clear boundaries for you.”
■ Done within the relationship (with and for you)
■ Increased supervision (a much “smaller” world to prevent
further untruths
■ Practice:
● Give opportunities to provide information/answer
questions in a truthful manner
● Include some non-issue questions as a “test”
● If children are saying something that we know is not
true, it is okay to stop your child right there.
○ “Is this story real, or pretend?”○ “Did you really __________, or do you wish
you ___________?”
○ “I’ll bet you wish that was true.”
○ “Are you telling me this because it’s part of our
conversation, or because it’s too hard to
answer my questions right now?”
○ “Are you telling me this because I need to
know, or because you’re trying to be in
charge?”
○ Punishment:
■ Latin word Punere: To inflict pain
■ Done TO you, for a specific amount of time
■ Restricts, but doesn’t teach
■ May increase resistance & increased attempts to get
away with being dishonest
● When we address behavior, our intervention should be:
○ Quick
○ Kind
○ Calm
○ Firm
○ Close (proximity to the child)
● Lean In:
○ Grace is being nurturing/loving even in the hard
○ Grace is having courage to (through kindness) provide
opportunities for accountability
● Accountability Conversations:
○ Set parameters for the conversation
■ Answer the question & stop
■ If it becomes too hard, you can tell me & we can stop
■ If I see it is too hard, I will end the conversation & give
you more time
● Key here is that life does not fully return to “normal”
until problem is solved (truth is told)
○ Some useful strategies:
■ TRUST illustration●
■ “I’m going to ask you a question & I already know the
answer. Can you tell me now, or do you need a minute?”
■ “If we were watching a recording from (wherever incident
took place), what would we see?”
● Most effective with younger kids
○ Apology/Amends as appropriate/needed
● Moving Forward:
○ Trust & Verify
■ confirm plans w/leaders or other adults
○ Set new expectations for obtaining permission/freedoms
■ Be the driver
■ Ask, “When I drive by, where will I know you’ll be?”
○ When they “mess up”
■ Return to the level of trust/honesty they were able to
manage

Car Riders
Due to construction parking will be even tighter as we start our year. Please do not plan to park in the lot. If you are bringing your child to school in a vehicle use the Express Loop and follow the traffic pattern, considering we have 400 students at arrival and dismissal it is actually quite efficient. Please read the Arrival and Dismissal procedures in the handbook to familiarize yourself with this process. Thank you for you patience and cooperation.
Playground Updates
The playground construction is really moving along. We will have access to the track and field next week. We will utilize this space as well as our bus loop for outdoor recess while the rest of the work is being completed. We have new outdoor toys and games for the students to use during recess. What an exciting and fun year we will have as we launch our new play structures. Thank you TSD community for your yes votes, making these enhancements possible.
Arrival Doors
The construction will dictate our arrival doors entrance usage for the first few days. We will have plenty of staff that will assist students and help them to the correct entrances on Tuesday. Thank you for being patient.
Costello Handbook
Please review this information, it also includes details regarding our dismissal process. This year we will have our fifth graders who use the Express Loop (car riders) at the front of the line and kindergartners at the end of the line. We made this adjustment to give our younger students more space and believe it will be a safer location.

5th Grade Instrumental Music Information...
SUBJECT: Getting Started in 5th Grade Instrumental Music
Dear Fifth Grade Parents,
We are so excited for the fifth graders to participate in Instrumental Music this year! All fifth graders participate in band or orchestra classes, which take place during the school day twice a week.
Here is some helpful information for you as you and your fifth grader prepare for the beginning of the school year. You’ll hear more details from us soon!
When to Bring Instruments to School
Students do not need to bring instruments and class materials to school until the week of September 15. Please do not bring instruments to school before that date.
New Students/Missed Instrument Fittings
If your child is new to the district or was absent during instrument fittings, we will make sure your child attends make-up fittings. We will contact you separately with more information and about your next steps.
Getting an Instrument
Most students attended instrument fittings in the spring, chose an instrument to play, and are ready to get an instrument and class materials. If you have not already done this, we recommend beating the rush and getting started as soon as you can. We are again attaching the information packet that was shared in the spring; this packet includes information about obtaining an instrument.
