Counselor's Corner with Mrs. Graveman
Happy Weekend!
Time is flying by and spring is in the air. This week during our counseling lessons, 5th grade did a fabulous job defining what a community is and how our school is a community. Together, students identified potential problems in our school community and next time we meet we'll brainstorm solutions.
Next week in our counseling lessons, 6th and 7th graders will focus on caring for ourselves as we discuss the differences between good and bad stress. Students will self-reflect how the different types of stress affect their performance academically, socially, in extra curriculars and at home. 6th grade will continue on in their South Dakota My Life lessons and look at how their interests relate to different careers. 7th graders will continue to learn about their brain and process how emotions are connected to thoughts and the affect they have on our decisions.
3rd grade will practice communicating their feelings as we master "I feel statements." I feel statements are a powerful communication tool to let someone know our feelings are hurt without casting blame. We take ownership of our feelings while explaining what happened and asking for a solution. Here's the format for an "I feel statement," I feel (feeling) when you (action) I need (solution.) 2nd grade will continue to grow their understanding of empathy as we identify examples of empathy in school.
Have a great weekend!
