Outdoor Play

Research shows that winter outdoor play offers significant developmental advantages for children. We've compiled helpful resources below:

5 Benefits of Outdoor Play in the Winter
Why Being Outdoors In Winter Is So Very Good For Kids
The Benefits of Cold Weather Play
Why Letting Your Kids Play Outside in Winter is the Right Move

Essential Safety Tips for Cold Weather Play:

Dress in Layers - Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add an insulating middle layer (like fleece), and finish with a waterproof, windproof outer layer. This traps warm air and allows you to remove layers if children get too warm from active play.

Protect the Extremities - Mittens keep hands warmer than gloves since fingers generate heat together. Ensure hats cover ears, and use scarves or neck gaiters to protect faces in very cold or windy conditions. Wool or synthetic socks work better than cotton, which holds moisture.

Watch for Wet Clothing - Wet clothes lose their insulating properties quickly. If children get wet from snow or sweat, bring them inside to change. Having spare mittens is especially useful since these often get wet first.

Set Time Limits - Young children lose body heat faster than adults. In very cold weather (below 20°F/-7°C) or with wind chill, limit outdoor time to 20-30 minutes and take warm-up breaks indoors. Watch for shivering, which is an early sign they're getting too cold.
