Tardy Policy "On Time, Every Time"
At Sumner High School, we believe punctuality is a critical life skill that contributes to academic success, personal responsibility, and post-secondary readiness. Our tardy intervention system uses a tiered, restorative model focused on student reflection and re-engagement, while maintaining clear accountability.
Tardy Definition
A student is considered tardy if they arrive late to class without a valid excuse. Students more than 10 minutes late will be marked as absent and subject to unexcused absence interventions under Becca law. Students arriving after 10 minutes will be marked “N” in Skyward and receive MTSS and disciplinary interventions.
Unexcused Absence Policy
Cell Phone Policy
Cell Phones need to be silenced and put away during class time, unless given explicit permission from their teacher. If a student has an urgent matter they believe they need to tend to on their cell phone, they need to proactively communicate with their teacher.
If a student is seen with their cell phone they will be reminded of our expectation of no cell phone use or earbuds during class time and will be required to place their device away. If a second violation occurs during class time the following discipline actions will occur based on the number of incidents accrued by the student.
If a student continuously needs warnings to put their phone away, a teacher can make a discipline referral to support correcting the behavior. If a student has incidents across multiple teachers Monday School or ISS may be issued.
If a student receives ISS a Responsible Use of Technology Plan may be developed.
Comprehensive Sexual Health & HIV/AIDS Prevention Curriculum
Parent Curriculum Preview Night
Washington State law requires that every student receive Comprehensive Sexual Health education,
including HIV/AIDs prevention education, in grades 6 through 12. Because this unit covers sensitive
topics, Washington State law and SBLSD board policy require that parents are provided the
opportunity to preview these lessons and excuse their student from these lessons if they wish.
The district is hosting a Curriculum Review Night to provide an opportunity for parents and guardians of students currently enrolled in the classes listed below to preview Comprehensive Sexual Health and HIV/AIDS prevention teaching materials and ask questions about the resources used in the classroom.
- Human Growth and Development (Puberty): In accordance with RCW 28A.300.475, a parent or guardian may excuse their student from human growth and development instruction upon written request to the building principal and/or classroom teacher. Previewing instructional materials is not required to request an excusal.
- HIV/AIDS Prevention Education: Under RCW 28A.230.070, state law requires that parents or guardians attend one of the district’s information sessions in order to request that their student be excused from AIDS prevention education. Following attendance at an information session, a written opt-out request may be submitted to the building principal and/or the student’s classroom teacher.
If you are unable to attend the preview event and you wish to view the resources, please contact
Instructional Services at (253) 891-6065 to schedule a viewing appointment.
Help Your Teen Build Strong Attendance
Missing just one or two days a month can add up to nearly 10% of the school year, putting students at risk—even when absences are excused. Consistent attendance is key to success in middle and high school.
Tips for Families:
Schedule appointments outside school hours or during breaks.
Keep your teen home only when they’re truly sick.
Have a back-up plan for getting to school if something unexpected happens.
Talk with your teen about why showing up every day matters.
Contact the school if you notice changes in behavior or need support.
Keep your contact information up to date.
If your teen is absent, notify the school by replying to the ParentSquare notice, calling, emailing, or sending a written note.
Every day in class helps your teen stay on track for graduation and future goals.
Family Communication tool
The District utilizes ParentSquare for its robocalls, emails, text messages and more!
Here are just a few key ParentSquare features we’re especially excited for:
One tool for all communication formats
Supports 106 languages with real-time, two-way translation
Families choose communication format (text, email, voice calls) and timing (immediate or digest)
Please make sure your contact information is up-to-date in Skyward Family Access. With text messaging a family-preferred communication format, be sure to include your cell phone number in the primary phone field.
State Law and Required Attendance
The Sumner-Bonney Lake School District and staff care about the well-being and academic achievement of each student. We know that daily attendance is one of the most powerful predictors of school success and on-time graduation. Our goal is to have every student at school on time, every day.
State law for mandatory attendance, called the Becca Bill, requires children from age 8 to 17 to attend a public school, private school or a district-approved home school program. Children who are 6 or 7 years old are not required to be enrolled in school. However, if parents enroll their 6 or 7 year old, the student must attend full time. And, school districts are required, under RCW 28.225.020 and RCW 28A.225.030 to take a series of actions when students accrue absences.
Also by law, we notify parents/guardians when their student is absent. If a student reaches a certain number of unexcused absences the school will contact parents/guardians to create a plan to support good attendance. Find information about excuse and unexcused absences, tardies and attendance procedures in the district’s Student & Family Information Guide and Policy 3122 Excused and Unexcused Absences.
