Sectional Attendance Reminders
As we enter a new sports season, we wanted to take a moment to remind all Honors and Symphonic Band students and families of the following rules and procedures:
- Students are always allowed to miss an athletic practice to attend band sectionals or a rehearsal.
- Students can miss a sectional or rehearsal for games, tournaments, and meets. Students must email a band director before an absence due to a game, tournament, or meet. Due to the complexity of sporting events, do not assume we know every athletic calendar.
- All other exceptions to this rule must be approved by the band director at least 48 hours before the absence or earlier.
- Students in tennis are allowed to miss one practice week to attend sectionals. If there are multiple band-related events in the morning during a given week, the students should consult with their band director on which events to attend.
- Students are not allowed to miss sectionals for club sports, extra-curricular activities, tutoring, make-up tests, or any other non-Killian activity without prior approval from a band director.
- Students involved in off-campus PE must notify a band director before a sectional or rehearsal absence due to the related athletic activity.
- Students who are sick are excused from a sectional if there is an email communication from the student or parent within 24 hours of the absence. If possible, an email before the sectional absence is preferred.
Students who miss a sectional to attend an athletic practice without prior approval from a band director will be given a grade of zero for the sectional. Sectionals cannot be made up. If a playing test occurs during a sectional, it is the student’s responsibility to email their band director and coordinate a make-up test within a week of the original playing test date.
Our success as a program is a result of a lot of different components. However, regular attendance at all rehearsals and sectionals is at the core of this success. A great deal of planning goes into each weekly sectional. When there are excessive absences, all members are affected, not just those absent.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Please consider purchasing an item off of our wishlist to help bring the holiday spirit into the band hall. You can also share the wish list on social media. All items purchased from the list are delivered directly to Killian.
