October Raven Report

By: Avery Possberg and Brielle Tingey

Introduction

Hello, we are Avery and Brielle. We are the first in our grade 9 honours class to write a Raven Report this year. The 9th grade honours students will be writing a Raven Report each month. Every month it will be a different group of students and they will inform you of what happened in the past month. This is a great responsibility for the grade 9 honours and we are so happy to be the first this year.

Recap of September:

After a great Welcome Week and first month we are coming into October. We have finished the first month with lots of fun activities like hotdogs and teacher bingo for Welcome Week, the start of volleyball, Meet The Teacher and everyone participated in the Terry Fox run.

Why did the skeleton not go to the dance?

He had no-body to go with!

What sports are happening in October?

During October, the volleyball season started and the girls and boys teams have been competing in many games. The last matches are around the corner and the teams are getting ready. All three teams have been training hard to make it to finals and are getting ready to dominate the other teams. The senior boys coaches are Nathan Mochulski, and Saverio Hackman. The senior girls coach is Reanna Armbruster. The junior girls coach is Autumn Cole. All the coaches have led the teams to many wins.

What is a mummy’s favorite type of music?

Wrap!

Events that happened in October.

This October, our school celebrated Halloween by having a spooky Halloween dance (planned by the Leadership 8 students) on Friday, October 30th! As well, there were movies happening at the same time, a haunted escape room (created by some of Ms. Best’s math classes), and a haunted house in the drama storage room (designed by the Drama 9 class)!! Everyone had so much fun and we can’t wait to do it again next year.

The Hockey Plus students have just started walking to the Sportsplex. Remember to start bringing warmer clothes and make sure your children dress for the weather, as it is starting to get chilly out there.

At lunch, chess players have denominated their opponents and used their brains to make the best moves possible. Thank you Mrs. Best for hosting the chess matches.

The grade 9 honors class went on a field trip to the Red Deer Polytechnic center to learn about science and have some fun! They also went to the Legislature and learned about how our government works and how we can contribute to our community. The guides taught them how the building was made and told them some cool fun facts. Did you know they wanted to make the building have a bunch of gold and make all the elevators straight gold? But they had already gone over budget and could not afford to, so instead they used brass as a replacement. If your child has any questions or is interested to learn more be sure to tell them to ask one of the grade 9 honors students.

What do you call two witches living together?

Broom mates!

Please remind your children that the hallway exit signs are not basketball hoops and are not to be dunked on or hit. If your kid hits one and it gets damaged, the family will be fined.

The cast list for Performance Arts has been released. This year, RHJ Theatre is producing Frozen Jr.! Be sure to ask your kids what role they got and congratulate them. We can't wait to see the performances in March!

Coming Up in November.

At the start of November there is National Bring Your Kid to Work day for the grade 9s. On November 4th make sure to bring your kid to work and show them what it's all about! At the start of November there will also be some people coming to interview your kids in their CEFL classes and prepare them for the big world and getting a job.

Speaking of interviews, the first week of November is also Parent-Teacher Interviews. Don’t forget to sign up!

I hope everyone has a great year! Look for the next edition of The Raven Report at the end of November.

Supporting Boys' Mental Health
Presented by Recovery Alberta
📍 Location Rudolph Hennig Junior High Library

Justin Mizkolzie is leading the session. Justin is a Registered Psychiatric Nurse with Recovery Alberta, working as a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Therapist.

During this session, Justin will explore an important question: How do we raise boys who are strong enough to face life’s challenges—and comfortable enough to ask for help when they need it? We’ll look at the role of connection, recognize common mental‑health challenges, and explore practical ways to build resilience, coping skills, and confidence.

Take Our Kids to Work Day: November 4

With the theme “Different Perspective, Shared Direction,” Take Our Kids to Work Day 2026 recognizes the importance of expanding horizons and embracing diverse career paths. Take our Kids to Work Day provides Grade 9 students with an opportunity to be exposed to the world of work, an important aspect of career planning. Students will participate by job shadowing someone at work for the day, or participating in activities planned at the school. Families are responsible for connecting their student with a job shadow opportunity; often this is with a family member or family friend. Grade 9 families will be sent information on how to participate in the coming weeks. Now is a great time to start looking for a job shadow opportunity! Learn more

Inclement Weather

With the winter season almost here, the school has a few reminders for families:

  • Ensure students have clothing appropriate for expected weather conditions.

  • If weather conditions are bad enough to impact student transportation, Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) advises families directly, and posts updates on social media and eips.ca.

  • Decisions regarding bus cancellations are guided by an EIPS administrative procedure that states, “school bus service may be suspended…when there is a forecast or current temperature of -40 C, including wind chill factor, in one or more regions.” Other reasons for suspending or delaying school bus services include adverse weather and poor road conditions.

  • When school bus services are suspended, schools remain open to students.

For more information, contact EIPS Student Transportation at 780-417-8151.
