The Best War Movie Ever
Years ago, I wandered into a London movie theater to see a war movie and when I got there I realized I was seeing a war. I was 10 minutes late so I missed the opening scene where the veteran kneels at the grave of his fallen Captain and instead I landed at Omaha beach. This was a really good theater with cushy seats and a breathtaking surround sound system. As Spielburg’s handheld camera-driven masterful scene unfolded I could feel myself sinking deeper into my seat. I was hiding. I was afraid I might catch a richochet, Spielburg’s gift to the world was a realistic depiction of 20th century warfare.
Compare it to the clip below of the D-day landing in the Longest Day with Robert Mitchum to see the difference between a Hollywood war and a real one. The latter is messy and incomprehensibly horrific, the former is a calm and well choreographed “hero” story,

My Israeli Cousin, Ittay, wrote a book to be published in January
Hope for Israel and Palestine in 2025
Some might remember the video I posted in the KC of Ittay’s reflections the day after October 7th. Ittay helps run the Kids4Peace program for the same organization that runs the Seeds of Peace Camp in Otisfield, Maine. Each summer Palestinian, Israel and other teenagers meet to learn about each others lives and find paths to peace that move past fruitless political roadblocks.
