Counselor's Corner

This month we are talking about Responsibility. One way to define Responsibility is “taking action and understanding the impact of our choices.” Taking action can mean doing the right thing or completing the tasks you have been assigned. Understanding the impact of our choices means that our actions matter. Positive and responsible actions can help people and irresponsible actions can hurt others. We are learning to be accountable for our actions.

We have all demonstrated responsibility in our lives. Many of us have seen people practice Responsibility in ways that have inspired us. Stories are powerful tools for connecting as a family. Protect time this week to share stories about Responsibility with each other (you can use the story prompts to get started). At the end of the conversation, think of 1 way you can practice Responsibility this week.

Story Prompts:

  • A time I (or someone else) showed responsibility was _____.
  • An act of Responsibility that changed/challenged me was _____.

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month!

What is dyslexia? Here are a few things that are important to know about dyslexia.

1. It is neurobiological, so the brain processes written and spoken information differently.

2. It is a language-based disability NOT a problem with vision.

3. It is genetic, so it passes through families.

4. More common than you realize! Approximately 1 in 5 have it.

Did you know that individuals with dyslexia use different parts of their brain while reading? Non-dyslexia readers rely on the left side of the brain. However, individuals with dyslexia rely more on the right side of the brain (this results in reading that is slow and labored).

World Dyslexia Day - Thursday, October 8th. Wear RED! Please encourage your class to wear red to school to help spread awareness at Hayes!

KISD Partners in Education - Food for Families

Katy ISD’s Partners in Education invites you to support families who could use a little extra help during the winter break through our Food for Families campaign. Campuses identify students in need, and with support from the community, Partners in Education will provide grocery gift cards and a heartfelt note. Each gift is delivered by a campus staff member, reminding students that their Katy ISD family cares.

Help us turn a gift card into something more: Donate to Katy ISD Food for Families by Thursday, December 10 through Katy ISD Pay N’ Go or by check payable to Katy ISD Food for Families and mailed to:

🩺💗 A Note from Nurse Neumann:

Asp caterpillars love our big oak trees, and we have spotted a few on our school grounds recently! These fuzzy caterpillars may look soft and cuddly, but their tiny hairs and spines can cause a painful sting if touched.

We want our students to have fun and play safely. Please remind your child:

👀 Look, Don’t Touch! It may be helpful to show them a picture of an asp.

🐛 See a fuzzy caterpillar? Look from a distance and leave it alone.
🌳 Avoid touching unfamiliar insects or plants.
🧑‍🏫 If you see an asp or think you have been stung, tell an adult right away.

Thank you for helping us keep our Hawks safe and sting-free while they enjoy the playground!

Chromebook Insurance

Parents can opt-in for accidental insurance for the Chromebook and must select this option during Annual Student Update or New Student Enrollment. The insurance must be paid within 30 days after the student's first day of attendance and will not cover intentional damage. Insurance fee(s) will be paid in the District's Pay 'N Go application and insurance coverage will not begin until payment is recieved. Failure to pay within 30 days after the first day of attendance will result in your student's device not being covered for the entire school year. Once insurance is selected and your record has been approved, you will recieve an email with instructions on how to pay for the fee in Pay 'N Go.

Insurance is valid until the last day of summer related to the current school year or until it is depleted.

If you did not select insurance and would like to add it, you have 30 days after your student's first day of attendance to add it and complete payment. You can send an email to changemyrequest@katyisd.org and provide the following information:

  • Student's name:
  • Student's ID:
  • Student's Campus:

Volunteer Registration

Katy ISD is grateful for the thousands of volunteers who make a difference in our schools each year. To help maintain a safe and secure environment for our students and staff, all volunteers serving on or off campus during or outside the instructional day are required to register annually through the district's Raptor volunteer management system. A valid government-issued photo ID and email address are required to complete registration. Your information will remain confidential and will not be shared outside of the volunteer program, except for applicants who register as a Community Volunteer (not a parent, grandparent, or guardian of a current Katy ISD student) or as a KEYS Mentor. For these volunteer roles, the information required to complete a background check will be shared only with our authorized background screening provider, JDP.

Once registered and approved, volunteers can:

• Sign up as a campus volunteer by completing the volunteer recruitment form provided by their campus organization(s) or by contacting the campus volunteer coordinator.
• Track volunteer hours through their volunteer profile for every Katy ISD campus where they serve.
• Quickly and easily submit individual off-campus volunteer hours.

SMARTtag Parent App

The SMARTtag app will send notifications to registered mobile devices and tablets, providing parents with instant updates about bus delays, route alterations, or emergencies. Parents who already have a SMARTtag account will be able to use the same log-in information on the app. Parents may download the app via the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

We highly recommend if you have a student who rides the bus, you utilize this App.

Tardies

Students are expected to arrive at school on time and be in their classroom by 7:50 a.m. Any child entering the building after 7:50 a.m. will be considered tardy.

Parents/legal guardians of students arriving to school after the 7:50 a.m. tardy bell, will be asked to park and accompany the student into the building and report to front office to sign in. Please plan for extra time on rainy/bad weather days as our car rider line is longer on these mornings. Please note, that the closer it gets to 7:50, the longer the line can get, so arrive early to ensure your child is not late.

Car Rider Reminders

  • Always have the car tag hanging from the rear view mirror (parents without tags will have to park and go to office to check out a student).
  • To keep too many cars off of the main street, cars will file into the car rider line in 2 rows.
  • Cars will zipper merge into one row by the marquee.
  • Staff members will motion for you to pull up to the designated pick-up station.
