Corn Maze Trip
On October 9, Mayland’s Outdoor Adventure Club visited Harvest Farm LLC in Valle Crucis to work through a corn maze. After the maze, we visited the Mast General store, a historic mercantile and community hub started in the 1800's, filled with memorabilia, merchandise, and plenty of goodies.
At the corn maze each group worked together to find the way through the twists and turns. This wasn’t an average maze! Scattered throughout the maze were pieces of a map that we had to find and collect. Once we gathered all of the pieces, we could tape them together like a puzzle and find our way out of the intricate maze. It was a fun challenge that tested our teamwork, problem solving skills, and sense of direction. Everyone enjoyed searching for the missing pieces and helping each other along the way.
Trips like this are what makes our school’s outdoor club so special. Not only do we get to explore new places and try new activities, but we also get to spend time with friends, work together, and make lasting memories outside of school.

Trip to Linville Falls
Thursday, October 16, 2026, Mayland Early College’s Outdoor Adventure Club took a trip up to Linville Falls, hiking the farthest stretch to see the beautiful falls. The elevation of the Erwins View hiking trail reaches all the way up to an entire mile one way, or two miles round trip. Going to the Gorge (Plunge Basin Trail) was 1.7 miles round trip. Linville Falls gets approximately 350,000 visitors per year. Overall, this hiking trail was beautiful, especially in the fall conditions with so many pretty colors from the diverse trees surrounding the falls. After hiking all that way in 83 degree weather we made a quick stop to wade in the Linville River to cool off!
