As part of Fire Prevention Week, the Sedro-Woolley Fire Department visited the in-town elementary schools this week!

Assistant Fire Chief Jerry Gardner spoke with students about what to expect if a firefighter enters their home during an emergency, showed off firefighter gear, and shared important tips about having an emergency escape plan.

Students learned the importance of staying safe, not re-entering a burning building, and calling 911 from a neighbor’s house.

We are so grateful for our partnership with the Sedro-Woolley Fire Department and their dedication to keeping our students safe!

Members of the Sedro-Woolley RISE Coalition got a firsthand look at the fun and engaging Jazzminton game—purchased with coalition funds—at Sedro-Woolley High School!

What is Jazzminton? It’s a paddle ball game that blends elements of tennis, pickleball, badminton, and ping pong! Perfect for all ages and skill levels, Jazzminton can be played on the stage during lunch. The birdies slow down mid-air, challenging you to keep them in play! Birdies adjust their speed based on your hits. The game is great for improving coordination, lateral movement, and reaction time.

The RISE Coalition is a volunteer group working to improve community health by addressing risk factors linked to youth substance use. Our diverse membership includes youth, parents, law enforcement, businesses, healthcare, and more! We partner with the Sedro-Woolley School District and United General #304, with support from the Washington State Community Prevention and Wellness Initiative and federal Drug-Free Communities grant.

Sedro-Woolley RISE hosts event to help prevent opioid misuse in community

Sedro-Woolley RISE will host a prescription drug take-back event on Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Sedro-Woolley City Hall, 325 Metcalf St. The event offers the public a safe and convenient way to dispose of unused or expired prescription medications. Both prescription and over-the-counter medications will be accepted.

Medications can remain in their original containers, and there is no need to remove labels. Medications not in their original containers will also be accepted.

The take-back event supports the Washington State Health Care Authority’s "Starts with One" campaign, which educates young adults, parents, and older adults about the dangers of prescription drug misuse and the importance of safe storage and disposal of prescription opioids.

According to the campaign website, “75% of opioid misuse starts with people using medication that wasn’t prescribed for them — usually taken from a friend or family member.” Safely disposing of medications is a simple step to help prevent misuse. Participating in these take-back events is one thing individuals can do to help address the opioid epidemic and protect their loved ones.

Join the Sedro-Woolley High School Parent Group

Did you know that the Sedro-Woolley High School Parent Group is dedicated to making school a more enjoyable place to learn? The group's mission is to support both students and staff throughout the school year by organizing fun events, like games and scavenger hunts for students, and providing meals for staff during parent/teacher conferences.

Led by President Jina Lewellen, Vice-President Crystal Mulvahill, Secretary Nicole Bauer, and Treasurer Pamela Santangelo—the group welcomes new members eager to contribute to our school community.

Activities are planned for October, including a Halloween-themed scavenger hunt where students will search for pumpkins, bats, and ghosts hidden around the school, redeemable for prizes. The group will also be handing out candy at lunchtime on Halloween and hosting a costume contest. In November, during Parent/Teacher Conferences, the group will provide a hearty Crock Pot Soup, salad, and dessert dinner for the high school's hardworking staff, allowing them to focus on parents and students.

High school families are invited to attend the monthly meetings, held on the first Monday of the month at 6 p.m. in the Sedro-Woolley High School Library. The next meeting is November 4.

Free Breakfast & Lunch for ALL Students Free Breakfast & Lunch for ALL Students

Free breakfast and lunch meals for ALL students will continue for the 2024-2025 school year. The continuation of free meals is possible through implementation of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Community Eligibility Provision (CEP).

Please note that CEP allows the service of one free breakfast and one free lunch meal daily. If students wish to have more than one meal per day, they will need to have money added to their food service account online or in the school office and will be charged accordingly. In addition, milk is an a la carte item. When taken by itself, the charge is $0.60. Students can get milk for free by ensuring they select a reimbursable meal, which can include a milk, fruit and vegetable. Students are not required to get the daily entrée.

Any questions about CEP or the Food Service Program can be directed to the Food Service office at 360-855-3515.

**Please note that most youth sports are run by volunteer boards of directors. Coaches are most often fellow parents and there is a significant referee shortage amongst almost every sport. Volunteering to coach or training to become a referee is one of the best opportunities a parent or guardian has to stay involved in their child's life through various stages of development!
