Lyme School Friends,

We have had a great two weeks!

Our middle school students did a wonderful job putting on their production of Newsies Jr. A big thank you to the specialists team under the direction of Ms. O'Leary who organized and pulled off this fantastic show! It has also been staff appreciation week and our staff members have been recognized by various groups. Thank you to the PTO for recognizing the teaching staff in so many ways now and over the course of the year.

No matter the year or how many times we go into this time of year thinking that it will be less busy, we always get to what can only be described as busy season. With student events in and out of school as well as performances and celebrations, there is A LOT going on. Let's remember to take a collective breath and enjoy these wonderful moments.

Please don't forget about the meetings for 5th grade families and 7th grade families. The 5th grade meeting is about entering middle school. The 7th grade meeting is about planning for the celebrations and organizing for the events to come over the 8th grade year.

The week of the 19th, I will be away with the 8th graders on the DC/Gettysburg Trip. Mr. Tomlinson and Mrs. Foxall will be covering in may absence. Please reach out to them if you need something. If you need to be in touch with me, please email although it may take me a bit longer to get back to you.

Have a fabulous weekend! The next newsletter will hit your inbox on May 23rd!

As always, thank you for your partnership and please reach out if we can be of assistance.

Regards,

John P. D'Entremont, Principal

Getting Ready for Middle School - 5th Grade Families

We would like to cordially invite you to a Middle School 101 meeting for your 5th graders to learn about the middle school and how the middle school program works.

We understand that no time works well, but it is our hope that with a few weeks notice you will be able to make it. This meeting will take place on Tuesday, May 13th at 5:30 PM upstairs in the Library Commons.

For those of you that can't make it, we will share materials afterwards with you.

Preparing for 8th Grade - 7th Grade Families

If the class is going to make a trip to DC, then it will require a significant fundraising effort and a few parents will need to be organized to take the lead. Dr. D'Entremont is hosting a meeting on Thursday, May 15th at 5:30 PM for 7th grade families in the gym (your students are certainly welcome) to discuss the past few years and how this class would like to move forward with end of year celebrations.

There will continue to be two groups for these classes next year. Please see this form to provide input on your child's placement for next school year.

Note from the PTO

Dear Lyme School Families-

Happy Friday!

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you all for helping make this week so meaningful for our teachers and staff. From the thoughtful drawings to the generous contributions of food and time- it all added up to something really special.

A big shoutout to the Cullen family of Hanover Brick n Brew for providing lunch yesterday, to Amy Ricker and her family for providing Tuesday's frozen treats and organizing yesterday's lunch, and to everyone who baked or brought goodies for today’s Dessert Bar. Thank you also to CommunityCare of Lyme for supplying the take-out containers so our staff could bring a little sweetness home.

It’s always a joy to see our community come together. The teachers and staff at the Lyme School work incredibly hard to create a safe, welcoming, and inspiring space for our kids, and it means so much to be able to celebrate them together. Thank you, again!

If you’re curious about what the PTO’s been up to or want to get involved, we’d love to see you at our last meeting of the year on Monday, May 12th at 7:30 PM. We’ll be wrapping up the year’s events and voting on next year’s PTO officers. If you'd like to join us, please email pto@lymeschool.org.

Wishing you a beautiful weekend,
Fauve Dela Cruz
Chair, The Lyme School PTO

Miss Ida and I would like to share one of our favorite moments so far here at Lyme School. The 2nd Graders came into the cafeteria on Friday, May 2 and shared their appreciation for us on National School Lunch Hero Day (who knew that was even a thing?!?)! They sang us a beautiful song, gave us a kind gift, and brought with them a sign that had signatures from all of the student body (not just the 2nd Grade) on it. We, of course, promptly hung it up with pride!

We would like to thank everyone involved with this sweet gesture, especially the 2nd Grade students, teachers, and support staff for putting it all together for us. Every day we find new reasons to love being part of this school and this day truly tops the list!

Thank you so much for making us feel appreciated!

Sincerely,

Chef Danielle and Miss Ida

Ms. Stanton's Update from the Counseling Office Ms. Stanton's Update from the Counseling Office

Mental Health Awareness Month was established in 1949 to increase awareness of the importance of mental health and wellness in Americans’ lives. What is Mental Health? A very basic definition that I share with younger students is your ability to handle life’s ups and downs, (big or small), being a good friend to YOURSELF, and recognizing things that aren’t working well for us, and what we can do about it. This is something we should look after and check in on and get help with - it’s just as important as our physical health! Whether people are still struggling with maintaining their mental health or recovering from or managing a mental health disorder, we want to create a welcoming space where students and families can talk about mental health and access the resources they need for support. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, there are 1 in 5 adults in America living with a mental illness, and yet, a stigma still exists, causing people to feel like they may be the only ones. Mental Health Awareness Month is an opportunity for people everywhere to come together and create change - helping to break the stigma.

Throughout the year in Stanton Time, we are having conversations about our feelings and emotions - being able to identify and express them in a healthy way to help us get what we need. We explore empathy and compassion not only towards others’ feelings and emotions but our own, too. All feelings are OK, and feelings CHANGE! Feelings are how we respond to what happens to us. Research shows that this early intervention and prevention method can support youth and their mental health. Our school will continue to be a healthy, happy place to learn and grow if we remind students, staff, and parents that they are ENOUGH, VALUED, and that they BELONG. We are so glad you and your students are members of our Lyme School Community!

As always, if you have concerns about your child’s mental health, please be in touch with anyone here at school for support. We’re here to provide help and resources!

With care,

Mrs. Stanton

May Art News

Kindergarten

We looked at some LARGE food this week in the form of Claes Oldenberg’s giant spoon and cherry. K kids dove into the oops box and found all sorts of art food. This was a nice opportunity to build with many different materials and tools.

Grade 1

We read the story Sandy’s Circus, about the artist Alexander Calder. This week was a sculpture week and the students worked with a variety of materials to create small sculptures of people, animals, and small structures.

Grade 2

Students learned about a type of drawing called Scientific Drawing. We talked about how artists and scientists both observe the world around them. Students studied flowers and made careful drawings by noticing line, shape, and color.

Grade 3

We are still working on our BotJoy project! More building and painting and telling stories about the remarkable ways in which these bots will bring joy.

Grade 4

We started stop motion animation projects, learning some of the basics of animating. Students used objects and cut paper to create short films. I have included some photos of the work that they finished last week. They made really beautiful landscapes with a wonderful sense of space.

Grade 5

The pots are out of the kiln! These little pots have so much personality and craftsmanship. The students worked carefully at every stage, and I hope the pots find their way home safely! This week, we started their Animal Adaptations sculpture in Art by constructing forms with newspaper, wire, and cardboard.

Art & Design Lab Highlights

Our middle schoolers have been busy behind the scenes of Newsies Jr, — and center stage — in their Art & Design Lab electives. Whether part of the lobby crew, set design, or stage crew, these students brought the recent show to life from start to finish.

From transforming the lobby, to building all the sets and props, to running lights and sound, they did it all! We’re incredibly proud of their creativity, leadership, and teamwork!

Bravo to our young designers!

Earth Month Activities at the Lyme School

To celebrate April—home to both Earth Day and Arbor Day—and to tie in with National Poetry Month, the staff members on our Community & Sustainability Committee hosted our second annual Earth Month Poetry Contest.

We received submissions in three categories: grades K–2, 3–5, and 6–8. Students shared beautiful poems on topics ranging from helping the environment to celebrating the natural world. The top three winners in each category received recognition and a prize, and the first-place winners read their poems to the school during last week's Morning Meeting.

Congratulations to all our winners, and thank you to everyone who participated in this fun event! The Community & Sustainability Committee loved reading your poetry.

K-2nd grade winners:

1st place - Poppy B.

2nd place - Elizabeth C.

3rd place - Parker G.

3rd- 5th grade winners:

1st place - Adeline F.

2nd place - Clara W.

3rd place - Franz V.

6th-8th grade winners:

1st place - Eila L.

2nd place - Maryam D.

3rd place - Linnea H.

As a culminating activity for Earth Month, students explored actions they can take to help care for our planet. In K-5 Spanish classes, we focused on the 3 R’s: Reduce (reducir), Reuse (reusar), and Recycle (reciclar). We then introduced a “4th R”—Rot—which refers to the process of composting food scraps and other biodegradable materials.

These bilingual lessons were not only informative, but also lots of fun! Students learned about the composting cycle, why it’s beneficial, and which items can or cannot be composted. Finally, they put their knowledge into action by composting their food scraps at lunchtime—and they did a fantastic job!

6th Grade Health News

Our recent visit from WISE included a lesson about stereotypes. Stereotypes are generalizations and judgments about groups of people that are not based on fact.

After a meaningful discussion around stereotypes and the media, students took part in creating anti- stereotype ads, magazine covers, and PSA’s. Our focus is to celebrate people for the individuals they are and not how they are supposed to be or what roles they are boxed into.

Ready, Set, Go!

This week, students in grades K-3 have been engaged in a mini unit of track and field. They have been exploring activities such as hurdling, the long jump, sprinting, and some longer “ distance” running.
Track and field offers a variety of events and exposing kids to these events hopefully sparks interest in skills they may not have been aware they have.
