Academy Avenue Elementary School

Dear Academy families,

I hope this week's newsletter find you well and enjoying this beautiful fall weekend. This past week's washout definitely was felt by the students and staff so I hope you all got out to enjoy it. The leaves are really starting to show those vivid fall foliages and the sunlight is surely getting shorter by the day. Before we know it, the trees will be bare and we'll be seeing snow before too long.

As we start off the week together, there are a few points I want to send out. First, for our fourth and fifth grade families, you should have received your child's MCAS results from last spring's exams. Our school saw good growth and it's something we want to keep working hard on...we will certainly need our families at home doing their part with our online programs like Lexia Core 5, ST Math and other online programs Academy offers. This includes reading nightly as the results show very high impact when students read 20 minutes every night. Can't find a book? Academy offers Bookflix and Trueflix to all of our families...some of these programs will even read along with your child. We also have Scholastic News for the kids as well as an amazing library with over 8,000 selections.

Second, we successfully completed our bus evacuation drill last Wednesday with SRO James Flanagan. The kids did great! In addition to these safety drills, I also want to asks families using the Adams School lot before and after school to avoid the path and parking areas. Since the school closed down for renovations, we have seen the flow of buses, vans, and work trucks increase, which can be very dangerous for students and families walking to and from school.

Third, I am happy to share that our whole school came together to hold a ROAR rally, where students from K-5 were recognized for being, Respectful, Owning their Actions, Achieving their best, and being Responsible (ROAR) exemplars for the first month of school. Needless to say, but it was wonderful being in the gym together.

Fourth, I am happy to announce that our long-standing building substitute, Ms. Mullen, will be taking over Classroom 3D while Mrs. Dias is out on maternity leave. We are very excited to see our Academy family expanding!

Last but not least, Thursday, October 20th is Picture Day. I highly recommend going the online route to order your Fall School Pictures. As a father of 4, it is way easier than doing it paper and pencil forms. A picture on the online information and school ID code will be included in the following section in this communication.
