Academics this week and a Peek at Next Week...
Social Studies
This Week:
This week we learned all about the war in the US! We focused on how Americans at home helped with the war effort and how it was very similar to WWI. We looked at some propaganda videos and compared and contrasted how white "enemies" were treated in comparison to Japanese "enemies" in the media. We learned about Executive order 9066 which imprisoned over 100,000 Japanese Americans for the duration of the war. We heard firsthand accounts from survivors and looked at how the US tried to cover up what happened.
Next Week:
Next week, we will continue learning about WWII as we focus on the battles on the European front and some of the new technology that was being used in the war. We'll go all the way through Victory in Europe day before changing gears and learning about the Pacific the following week. Students received a project this week that they will need to complete for homework before it is due on the 20th!
Science
This Week: This week, we continued learning about concentration. Students learned about how solutions made of the same types of materials can still be different if the amount of solute or solvent changes. Students made solutions with different amounts of water and salt on Tuesday and Wednesday to practice finding the concentrations of the solutions. On Thursday, students were given 3 mystery salt solutions. They had to measure the mass of equal volumes of each solution to find the slight difference in concentration.
Next Week: Next week, we will finish our concentration investigation and begin the next. Also, the Black History Month scientist project is due on Friday, February 16. Information can be found on FSA Connect and on google classroom. The students are preparing a poster to share information about their chosen scientists. A few students will be selected to share their work during the Black History Month presentation.

Ms. Rucker's Math Classes
We spent most of the week investigating why the area formulas for parallelograms and triangles work, and then practiced using these formulas (or decomposing strategies) to calculate area. Before we move on to finding the area of trapezoids, we wanted to make sure we all defined trapezoids the same way. Students shared their understanding of what makes a trapezoid a trapezoid and saw that their definition fell under either the "Inclusive" or "Exclusive" side, then engaged in The Great Trapezoid Debate to argue in favor of their side. We'll vote on the definition to adopt on Monday.
Next Week:
We will continue to apply strategies and formulas to solve problems related to geometry and area.
