Making Learning Stickier (3 ways)
Tech Tip Tuesday (February 25, 2025)
No, I'm not talking about a kindergartener's iPad covered with post-chicken nuggets ketchup fingers.
Three strategies to make your learning last longer than the test (or tomorrow) with tech in mind!
#1: π Retrieval Practice π
Retrieval practice is a powerful learning strategy that involves actively recalling information from memory. Using technology can enhance retrieval practice by providing interactive tools and platforms that facilitate this process. Flashcards, Think-Pair-Shares, graphic organizers, and interactive games allow for students to have purposes in retrieving information regularly.
π§ How? π»
Using Quizizz or Blooket for low-stakes quizzes AND removing leaderboards or using randomized names can reduce competition and anxiety among students, enhancing their ability to engage safely and reflect.
#2: π± Priming π±
Priming prepares students for new learning experiences by activating their prior knowledge and setting the stage for upcoming content. Exposing individuals to certain stimuli such as pre-teaching vocabulary or word associations influence their subsequent thoughts, behaviors, or responses.
π§ How? π»
Use Google Earth to show students where they might studying, or run a quick brain dump using a Canva digital whiteboard.
#3: π£ Feedback π£
Using feedback effectively in teaching is crucial for enhancing student retention and motivation by helping students understand their progress, identify areas for improvement, and reinforce positive behaviors.
π§ How? π»
Give feedback quickly in a TON of different ways easily. Use MagicSchool's Writing Feedback to quickly get bullet-pointed and referenced personalized feedback for students. Kami has voice, video, screen capturing, and text commenting to speed up and provide as much detail as you'd like.
Storytellers Unite: Crafting Tomorrow's Authors
Celebrate Be An Author Month from Book Creator this March by encouraging your students to unleash their creativity and become published authors! This initiative is a fantastic opportunity for teachers to engage students in the writing process, from brainstorming ideas to creating and sharing their own books using Book Creator. By participating, students can explore various genres, collaborate with peers, and even receive feedback from professional authors. Highlight the importance of storytelling and self-expression in your classroom, and consider organizing a class reading event to showcase their finished works. Letβs inspire our young authors to share their unique voices with the world!
Prep for some State Testing downtime easily!
ColorifyAI Makes customizable coloring pages that align with specific lessons or themes, enhancing student engagement and creativity.
The coolest parts?
You can make a coloring page out of any image or use a text prompt, AND it's free!
This tool allows educators to create illustrations that reinforce learning objectives, such as depicting scenes from literature or scientific concepts, while also promoting creative expression through descriptive prompt creation. Additionally, incorporating coloring activities can serve as a calming and mindful break for students, helping to reduce stress and anxiety during testing or other times of high exertion.
Let's schedule a time to collaborate that fits your schedule perfectly.
