Trash Talk Trash Talk

We have also noticed an increasing amount of trash being left in the cafeteria, hallways, stairwells, classrooms, and other common areas. Cups, food wrappers, bottles, food containers, and other litter create an unpleasant environment for everyone and attract pests.

The area outside in front of the building has not remained unscathed, either, especially before school and during Open Lunch. The front steps is the highest trafficked area at LaGuardia with everyone passing through there several times a day.

Adding trash to an overflowing trashcan is pretty much the same as throwing trash directly on the ground. In this situation, please bring your trash into the building and throw it away in the lobby.

CLIMATE ACTION DAY: WASTE CLIMATE ACTION DAY: WASTE

Waste Climate Action Day is coming up on October 20 and it is a great opportunity for a refresher on how to sort your waste. At LaGuardia, waste is sorted into four main categories: plastics/glass/metals/cartons, paper, compost, and trash. Bins for each type are available throughout the building.

Sorting is important to help ensure waste is recycled, leading to environmental benefits like energy savings and reducing pollution. A common assumption is that the custodians dump all waste into the same trash, this is not true. Custodians have to dump recycling into trash if the bin is contaminated, sorting your waste properly avoids contamination so custodians can keep recyclables separated.

To help with food waste, compost bins are located in both cafeterias. The majority of trash from the cafeteria can be composted or recycled, so be mindful when disposing of your food! A share table is also available in both cafeterias, allowing you to leave or take unopened food which helps reduce food waste.
