Today a Reader. Tomorrow a Leader.

Hello WHES Families,

We kicked off Literacy Month yesterday with a fun-filled assembly where we began our journey with Read Across America and a special visit from Elephant and Piggy! Our motto for this month (and beyond!) is "Today a Reader. Tomorrow a Leader." Please model for your child your own love of reading this month. This can be a dedicated time where you all read together, finding a new book at the library, or just talking about something you read today!

Here's a snapshot of this month's Literacy events!

Read Across America Map Challenge: March 9th to March 28th: Students are reading books that have something connected to every state in our United States! The grade that reads the most books wins a pizza party!

Book Share Day: TOMORROW! March 11: All students and staff will showcase their FAVORITE BOOK! (students can also choose a favorite book from their classroom library or our school library).

Wear a Word: Vocabulary Parade: March 18th: All staff and students will become a word for the day! Students can tape vocabulary word to their clothes and/or dress in way that represents their vocabulary word

Dress as your favorite Character and Character Parade: March 25th: Students and Staff are encouraged to dress as a favorite character from a book!

Book Fairy Visit - Monday March 28th: Shhh…. This is a secret for students!

Check out this AMAZING webcast from RIF (Reading is Fundamental)!

Enjoy!

As Spring creeps toward us it is time to change our clocks. We turn our clocks forward on March 13th. We are lucky that many of our time telling devices change our clocks for us- phones, cable boxes, computers will all spring forward 1 hour automatically.

Below are some facts and myths about Daylight Saving Time.

  1. FACT: The United States adopted Daylight saving time during World War 1

  2. MYTH: daylight saving time was created to help farmers get their harvests in- Farmers, in fact, fought the proposals, arguing they cut productivity and made life overall tougher for them.

  3. FACT: Arizona and Hawaii do not follow daylight savings time. Mass. has considered doing away with the practice.

  4. FACT: DST technically starts at 2am so less people will be awake to notice

  5. MYTH: All counties have some form of DST. In truth only 75 countries use a form of DST. Countries close to the equator are not greatly impacted by a change in daylight. There are also 38 African countries who have never used DST.
