Happy Sunday, Falcons!

The end of the school year is looming! It's been a long year filled with frequent challenges and pivots, but our staff, students, and community were flexible and successful despite the uncertainty! In true 2020-2021 fashion, the year gave us one last bad weather closure day and a tropical depression looming two weeks before hurricane season starts. Well played, 2021!

The amazing class of 2021 received a grand total of $1,392,155 in scholarship funds. We are excited to announce the 2021 valedictorian and salutatorian. Valedictorian Kai Semien will attend Prairie View A&M University and major in Psychology. Salutatorian Emma Garcia Rivera will attend Houston Baptist University and major in nursing. Read on to see the 2020-2021 lists of scholarship and award recipients.

Have a great week!

Texas Governor, HHSC Announce $2.5 Billion In Pandemic Food Benefits For Texas Families

Governor Greg Abbott announced that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) has received approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for a second round of federal Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) food benefits for families with children who have temporarily lost access to free or reduced-price school meals due to COVID-19 during the 2020-2021 school year. Visit www.hhs.texas.gov/pebt or call the P-EBT Call Center at 833-442-1255 to learn more.

Most families who receive SNAP benefits do not need to apply and will automatically receive P-EBT benefits on their Lone Star Card by May 28. Families who received SNAP benefits for the first time during the 2020-2021 school year in May or June 2021 and have children born on or before Aug. 1, 2014 need to apply.

Families who have children certified for free or reduced-price meals, or attended a school defined as a Community Eligibility Provision or Provision II school and received meals at no cost, during the 2020-2021 school year but did not receive SNAP benefits will need to apply.

Scam of the Week: QuickBooks Used as Bait for a Quick Scam

An easy way for cybercriminals to get your attention is to claim that you owe a large amount of money. Pair this claim with a QuickBooks-themed phishing email and malicious malware, you get a dangerous cybersecurity threat.

The cybercriminals send a well-made spoof of a QuickBooks email that even includes an invoice number. The email message states that you owe over one-thousand dollars for the order but it gives no further details. Attached to the email is what appears to be an Excel file with the invoice number as the filename. The bad guys are hoping you’ll open the attachment looking for more information. If you do open it, you’ll actually be opening a dangerous piece of malware specially designed to target your financial and banking information. This malware can lead to unauthorized charges, wire transfers, and even data breaches.

Here’s how you can stay safe from scams like this:

  • Never click a link or download an attachment in an email that you were not expecting.
  • Remember that bad guys can disguise anything, even file types.
  • If you think the notification could be legitimate, navigate to the official QuickBooks website and log in to your account to confirm.
