February is Heart Month, a time to bring attention to the importance of cardiovascular health, and what we can to reduce our risk of cardiovascular disease. Heart disease affects approximately 2.6 million Canadian adults, and many risk factors can be reduced through developing healthy lifestyle habits including:
  • Nutrition: Focus on whole foods, plenty of vegetables, and cooking at home to limit processed ingredients.

  • Physical Activity: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous activity per week. Even 10-minute bursts of movement can boost your mood and energy!

  • Managing Stress: Prolonged stress can lead to higher blood pressure; finding ways to "reset" your nervous system is vital for your heart.

  • Knowing Your Numbers: Regular check-ups to monitor blood pressure and cholesterol levels help in early prevention.

Stress is a part of life for just about everyone, but when it becomes prolonged, it can have strong negative effects on the body. If you are experiencing increased stress, consider these steps:
  • Connect: Talk to a family member, a friend, or your manager about contributing factors in your life that are causing distress.

  • Mindfulness: Take a look at these Stress Reduction Exercises from the Crisis & Trauma Resource Institute. These guided exercises focus on managing stress and anxiety through mindful awareness, breathing, and simple movements.

  • Professional Support: Reach out to our confidential Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) GreenShield+ or talk to your doctor about mitigation strategies.
