CES Weekly Communicator
Issue #30: March 22, 2024
Principal Corner
Good afternoon, Chapelfield families.
We had a wonderful learning community today! We learned another strategy to help us when we are feeling stuck, anxious, or frustrated. It is called grounding. Here is what it is:
- The 5-4-3-2-1 method is a grounding exercise designed to manage big feelings by focusing on what's around you rather than the thoughts that are bothering you
- It involves identifying 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste.
- They may have brought home an example of this from their pack today!
You can also watch the 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique video.
I know sometimes I use this strategy to get unstuck. This may be useful for you, too! It is important that our children see us using tools when we have big emotions. Consider sharing out-loud what you are doing when you feel stuck, anxious, or frustrated. Children look to us and how we react to situations to find ways to regulate their own emotions. Hope this helps!
Have a great weekend.
Sincerely,
Nikki Miller

CES Cultural & Community Night
Mark your calendars for an evening of celebration of the many cultures represented at Chapelfield Elementary along with third grade “Town” and our student art show.
We will share cultural dishes provided by our own families, music, and cultural craft stations.
“Town” is set up and run by third graders to demonstrate their knowledge of business entrepreneurship. It will be held in the third grade hallway.
Also be sure to enjoy student artwork displayed around the school.
Students must be accompanied by an adult. Please look for a sign up sheet about contributing food for this event. We can’t wait to see you there.
