Do A Project!

All Adler interns will take on a team project under the mentorship of an Adler staff member. Interns will be matched with projects based on their interests.

This summer, projects might include producing science-themed songs and annotating them on Rap Genius, designing summer camp content for preschoolers, or creating a 3D visualization of Far Horizons launch payloads.

Learn new skills!

Each week, interns will spend one day in a full group, tackling challenges in the realms of college and career. In the past, this has involved visiting other museums, building an online presence, learning how to search for colleges, and more.

You'll also get the opportunity to participate in Career X-Ploration, a summit of adult volunteers working in the STEM fields sharing out about their career paths!

Applications for Summer 2016 are now closed.

How to Write a Resumé

Resume: a professional document that shares your previous employment, volunteering or personal experiences, as well as any relevant skills. Resumes provide insight into who you are and what type of employee you might be.

What Your Resume Can Include:

  1. Name & Contact Info
  2. Education (high school only)
  3. Badges earned
  4. Work Experience
  5. Volunteer Experience
  6. Extracurricular Activities
  7. Relevant Skills and Languages
  8. Honors/Awards

Tips:

  • Make it easy to read: keep it simple and follow the format.
  • Put your experiences in order from most to least recent (aka, put your current stuff before your old stuff)
  • For each experience, briefly describe what you did or what you were responsible for. Hiring staff might not be familiar with abbreviations or clubs you mention.
  • Make sure to PROOFREAD!
  • Don’t worry if it’s short. In fact, it shouldn’t be more than a page long.

How To Write a Cover Letter

Cover letter: a professional document that allows you to explain to an employer why you are the perfect match for the job and organization. Cover letters use information from a resume, school transcript, and personal goals or motivators to state a case. You should always include why you want the position, and why you are the right fit for it.

You can also choose to submit a non-traditional cover letter in the format of a slideshow (PowerPoint), which could feature text and images of your own creation that address the same themes of who you are and why you want to be an Adler Intern.

What Your Cover Letter Should Include:

  • Your name and contact info
  • A greeting
  • What position you are applying to
  • How you are qualified for the job
  • Why you want the job (aka, what about the Adler program appeals to you? how will this help you?)
  • A polite closing

Consider the following questions to guide your cover letter/slideshow. You don’t need to answer any of them, but they are a good starting place:

  • Describe a situation where you identified a problem and took initiative to solve that problem. You may select a situation from your personal life, a job, a club or your school.
  • Describe how at least one item in your resume has prepared you to be an intern at the Adler. Make sure to consider the position you are most interested in when you respond, focusing on your first choice.
  • Think about what skills and abilities you hope to gain from this internship. Why do you need this opportunity at the Adler more than other applicants might?

Tips:

  • Begin your letter with "Dear Adler Teen Programs team" or something else more general.
  • Use your letter to go into more detail or offer additional info about yourself. Don't restate your resume word-for-word on your cover letter!
  • Reference specific things you read in the job info in your letter -- for example, you saw that a citizen science position is available, and you've always wanted to learn more about how scientists can work with non-science people to do work.

Check out this example letter format for an idea of what cover letters might look like.
