A Message from Mr. Dolce A Message from Mr. Dolce

Hello South Davis Families.

Thanks to everyone who came out Friday night to enjoy the artistic and creative talents of our students. Miss Strong, our amazing Art Teacher, curated a great experience for children and grownups alike, showing connections to our world, ourselves, and one of our favorite authors (Troy Cummings). And there was ice cream, which is always a hit!

Speaking of Troy Cummings, it was another engaging visit with the author and illustrator last Wednesday and Thursday. With support from the PTO as well as the Orchard Park Foundation for Academic Excellence and the District, we had two days of learning and creating with Mr. Cummings. He shared his story, his methods and approach, and had each grade help design new characters. A few students from across the school participated in a workshop with Troy, sharing their own work and getting feedback and advice. Many thanks to our Librarian Mrs. Carter for once again arranging a meaningful and memorable experience.

Today we welcome next year's Kindergarten students for a first look at South Davis and to complete the screening process before they begin with us. It's always a great time for staff to meet new families and initiate the partnership that will continue for the next six years.

Thursday, with support from the PTO and the West Herr Foundation, we will welcome Checkers the Inventor for our End of the Year Celebration Assemblies. We'll get to cheer on the hard work we put in this year, and celebrate how we've all tried to SHINE for ourselves and others.

Let's fill the MRAP!

We have today and tomorrow to bring in food items for the Blessing Box at the Orchard Park Presbyterian Church. All donations directly support our community, and your generosity is greatly appreciated.

As we approach the last few days of school, it is a good time to share some important reminders and tips for helping your family have a great summer and be ready for a smooth transition back to school come September 9.

We currently have our annual Beat the Heat event scheduled for the morning of Monday, June 22. This is when our friends at Hillcrest Fire Company bring a firetruck to South Davis and help us beat the heat of a warm summer day. Given the forecast, which is 60ish, possible rain, and a Northeast breeze, we will let families know on Sunday night if we are still proceeding. We weren't expecting October weather this late in June ;(

Three and 1/2 days left!!🫣

Have a great week!

Mr. Dolce

Exercising Resilience is this month's SHINE character trait. As we come to the close of the year, it's as important as ever to practice and promote resilience. With much left to do, perhaps, or as your children begin to lose their edge or focus, we can help them reach deep and and persevere, knowing that their efforts are worth it. Resilience is consistent with Habits 1 and 7 in Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, too. And the more we can embed those strategies in our life, the happier we'll be.

End of Day Pick-Up Reminders

  • Pre-K parents walk their children to and from the school. As a result, they need to park on South Davis Street. At the end of the day, if they are also picking up an older child, they may have to wait a bit longer.
  • If you are meeting your child on the sidewalk in front of the school, please mark your child a walker in the Parent Portal.
    • If you walked or biked to the building, that's great!
    • If you drove - and you are not a Pre-K parent - please be sure to park on the west side of South Davis Street (opposite side from the school), and use the crosswalk to and from the pick up area.
  • The curbside pick-up area should not be used for walkers. If you are getting out of your vehicle and you are not a Pre-K parent, please park on the other side of the street, or pull past the middle driveway to keep the pick-up zone clear.
  • If you are providing your tag #, then your child is a "pick-up" and you should stay in your vehicle at the curb.

As always, these are in place for the safety of all involved, and to ensure an efficient drop-off and dismissal process.

Changes to Start Time for 2026-27

While next year is still three months away, here's a reminder that the elementary start and end times are changing. School will begin at 9:10 and end at 3:15. Dismissal will begin around 3:20.

Recycling Crayons

Each year we have been collecting broken crayons and crayon remnants to be recycled. Mrs. Funigello's class at Eggert is helping the entire District do the same. The box is now in the hallway outside the Library windows in the Foyer. Feel free to send in any scraps you may have at home.

School Supply List - 2026-27

The School Supply List for next year is now available. We will again use School Tool Box, where you can purchase grade level supplies, boxed up and delivered to your home.
