Each year, White Cane Awareness Day is recognized and held on Oct. 15 as a ways to highlight and celebrate the right of blind and visually impaired people to be able to move freely independently. At Southwest School, the day held a special meeting in Colleen Cushing's second grade class.

The class got to take part in a variety of activities to help them experience a day in the life of their beloved classmate Jack, who is blind.

"The students moved, played, read, and typed with eye masks on so they could experience these things like Jack does," said Cushing. "It was a lot of fun and led to a lot of great conversations!"

It was a wonderful way to learn more about the perspectives of others and build a strong classroom community through shared experiences and personal connections.

Bond Referendum Question on the Ballot for Nov. 3 Election Bond Referendum Question on the Ballot for Nov. 3 Election

Evergreen Park Elementary School District 124 has a long history of bringing high-quality learning to the PreK-8 students in Evergreen Park. After hearing from our community on a larger proposal, we have revised the plans to focus on the main priority, Central Middle School.

At their August 12, 2026 meeting, the D124 Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution to place a Bond Referendum Question on the November 3, 2026, ballot.

District 124 is dedicated to providing a safe and supportive learning environment for all students. After a thorough process working with community members, a proposal was brought to a task force that seeks to address its highest-priority capital facility needs districtwide by replacing Central Middle School and making critical improvements at its four elementary schools. Community feedback was shared that the proposed plan was simply too large in nature to move forward with a March 2026 election.

The district worked with architects to revise the proposal to focus on the consistent priority item that was identified throughout the process, Central Middle School. The new proposal is $41.8 million less than the previous proposal and is focused on safety and security, modern learning environments, and establishing a school that could serve current and future generations of students in Evergreen Park.

The $68 million bond issue proposes to replace Central Middle School with a new, modern facility. If approved, homeowners would see an estimated LY2026 Tax Bill Change for a $300,000 home of $604, or approximately $50 per month, significantly less than the previous proposal. This estimate does not include the standard homeowner exemption, or other possible exemptions, which would result in a lower tax impact.

Visit the Proposal Page on the D124 website for more information and be sure to participate in this election process!
