Scott Middle School's Motto- "We Enter to Learn and Leave to Achieve"
What Has Been Happening in Ms. Farley's Classroom?
My 6th grade ELA classes have been working really hard. They are working on specific skills to boost our reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary using IXL. I am so proud of the progress they have made since the beginning of the year. We finished mythology and have moved on to nonfiction; Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World, the extraordinary true story of Shackelton and the Endurance. We watched a short video of the crew that discovered the wreckage of Endurance 2 miles at the bottom of the Arctic Ocean. Mrs. Kutney from the CCIU visited our class period 1-2 and together we worked on completing a TDA for the PSSA in April. I repeated the lessons alone with my other classes. We started from the beginning and worked in steps leading us to a complete answer. We will continue to work on this process using the computer rather than writing (the PSSA is on the computer this year). Lastly, we are building our independent reading stamina. Since it is the 4th marking period, students will be coming home with a reading log. Please encourage them to read for at least 20 minutes if not more. This log is for them; I want them to take responsibility for this. Just like the students practice during extracurricular activities (dance, cheer, sports, music, etc.) the brain is a muscle the more they practice reading the stronger it will get. I want to thank all the wonderful parents/guardians for their continued support throughout this school year. Together we can do anything!
Congratulations to the Cast and Crew of Rock of Ages
Congratulations to the cast and crew of Rock of Ages. Students put on two fantastic performances last Thursday and Friday nights. Friends and families were transported back to the 80s for a fun story of friendship and chasing dreams. It was hard not to sing along!
Great job, Mr. Wagner, students, families, and staff that helped to make this production a success. We are so proud of your hard work!
March's PBIS Focus... Cell Phones Off and Away
We are excited to share that our March PBIS reward for students who remained in class throughout February will be a Volleyball Knockout Tournament on March 31st during Related Arts classes.
Students who are not eligible to attend will complete a reflective assignment in the auditorium focused on respectful and responsible behavior during that time.
After reviewing our recent data, the PBIS Team has noticed an increase in electronic device use during the school day. In response, our focus for March will be reinforcing our expectation that cell phones remain “Off and Away All Day.” To encourage positive choices, students who are not written up for an electronics violation in March will earn Recess in April as a reward.
What “Off and Away All Day” Means
We are asking families to please review these expectations with your child:
-
Cell phones should be turned off once students enter the school building.
-
Phones should be stored in a bookbag or locker for the entire day.
-
If a student prefers to carry their phone between classes, each classroom has a cell phone locker where phones must be placed upon entering.
-
Students may retrieve their phone when leaving for their next class.
If a student is using their phone during class:
-
It will result in an office referral and detention.
-
Continued referrals may require the student to leave their phone at home or turn it in to the office each morning and pick it up at dismissal.
Why This Matters
There is growing research showing that even having a cell phone nearby can significantly impact students’ ability to focus and learn. Notifications, texts, social media, and videos can easily distract students from instruction and reduce engagement in class.
If you are looking for guidance about when your child may be ready for a phone or how to set parental controls, this resource may be helpful:

Staying in Touch During the School Day
If you choose to have your child leave their phone at home, please know you can always reach them by calling the school’s main office. We are happy to deliver messages or bring your child to the office to speak with you directly.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support in helping us create a focused, respectful learning environment for all students.
