Dear Parent/Guardian,
Did you know that math, more than reading, is the best predictor of future academic success? Research shows that Advanced Math courses in middle school have the following benefits:
• Provides Opportunity: Data reveals that taking advanced math in middle and high school, and taking math all four years in high school, significantly increases students’ success in earning a credential, associate or bachelor’s degree.
• Provides More Time to Pursue College Credit in High School: Students who take courses that give them an opportunity to earn college and/or Dual Credit (DC), Advanced Placement (AP), Career Technical Education (CTE) in high school are two times more likely to earn a credential, associate or bachelor’s degrees.
• Provides Increased Access and Wages: Students who take Algebra 1 in 8th grade complete postsecondary credentials and see increased wages in the workplace
We are happy to share updates to the Socorro ISD Math Program that aligns with state guidelines to support greater access to Advanced Math courses for all students.
In the Advanced 6th-grade Math program, students will primarily focus on 6th-grade math concepts while also delving into some 7th-grade math standards. Additionally, 6th-grade students will take the 6th-grade Math STAAR assessment at the conclusion of their 6th grade academic year.
In the Advanced 7th-grade Math program, students will focus on the 8th grade math standards and cover a portion of the 7th-grade standards. At the end of their 7th-grade year, 7th-grade students will be evaluated through the 8th-grade Math STAAR assessment. 8th grade students will be taking Algebra I, which is a high school credit course.
The Advanced Math Pathway provides a challenging and rigorous course of study designed to prepare all students for career, college, and military readiness. It facilitates increased access to college credit courses during high school. Socorro ISD offers the following courses in mathematics for grades 6-12:
The pathway is set-up for your child to be successful after high school. Our goal is to challenge them intellectually in their high school math classes while making sure they feel fully supported to and through the pathway and don't feel overwhelmed or discouraged. Should you have any questions regarding these amazing opportunities for our students, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
NO Deliveries Campus Policy
Instructional time will not be interrupted for students to collect a delivery at the front office. Safety continues to be a priority for Jane A. Hambric School. To minimize entry into the building, the following will be our new procedure beginning with the 2024-2025 school year:
- Parent will park in the parking lot, not at the student drop-off (SISD Police can give a citation).
- Item(s) delivered (including food) must be labeled with student’s full name and grade level.
- The item will be placed on a cart outside the main doors to the building by the person dropping it off.
- The school will not be responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged items.
- Students will not be called out of class for deliveries nor should they leave a class to pick it up.
*Items such as flowers and balloons cannot be delivered to the school.
Teachers and Staff
Food deliveries from Uber, Door Dash, etc., will not be accepted at the front office. Notify the driver to leave the order on the cart outside the school’s main entrance. The school will not be responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen orders. Drivers will not be allowed into the building. NOTE: students are NOT allowed to leave the classroom to pick up a teacher’s food order.
Updated Cellphone Policy for 24 - 25 School Year
Beginning with the 2024 - 2025 school year, the following cell phone policy will be in effect for students in grades K-8. JHS students in possession of a cell phone must comply with the JHS/SISD Cell Phone/Electronic Devices Policy and the JHS/SISD Acceptable Use Agreement.
All students will be allowed to use their cell phones/electronic devices during the following noninstructional school times:
- Before the first instructional bell rings.
- After the end-of-school dismissal bell.
- During out-of-town school sponsored events with parent and sponsor’s permission.
All students will not be allowed to use their cell phones during instructional time.
- Instructional time is defined as the time from the first tone of the tardy bell to the first tone of the dismissal bell.
- Cell phones must ALWAYS be turned off and out of sight during instructional time, during passing periods and during lunch time. Students should wait until they exit the building after school to access their cell phone.
- Cell phones must be placed in the student’s backpack or purse.
- Earbuds may only be used before and after school, and with the sponsor’s permission during school sponsored out-of-town trips.
Note: Parents are requested not to contact their child during the instructional school day via cell phone. If an emergency occurs and parents need to speak to their child, please contact the school for assistance.
CYBER SAFETY
Cyber-Safety awareness and training will be required while putting into practice social and professional etiquette relating to electronic devices. In addition to the rules outlined in these guidelines, students will be expected to comply with all class and school rules. The use of a cell phone is not a right but a privilege. When abused, privileges will be withdrawn. The following are considered more serious offenses/infractions and will be referred directly to the administration to be reviewed:
- Students are strictly prohibited from using cell phones or any electronic device for capturing images in locker rooms, restroom areas or any other area prohibited by the campus/District.
- Students are strictly prohibited from using social media (e.g., TikTok, FaceTime, Instagram, etc.) to post pictures or take videos during instructional time.
- Students are strictly prohibited from “bullying,” particularly cyberbullying, or posting derogatory statements about students, faculty, or staff via text message or social media.
If there is reasonable cause to believe that any cell phone or electronic device has been used in the transmission or reception of communications prohibited by law, policy, or regulation, students will be subject to disciplinary action.
CONSEQUENCES FOR VIOLATION OF POLICY
Violating the established policy will result in the following:
- First offense- the phone will be confiscated and must be picked up by a parent or guardian and pay a $15 fee.
- Second offense- the phone will be confiscated and must be picked up by a parent or guardian and pay a $15 fee plus the student will serve 5 days of community service.
- Third offense- the phone will be confiscated and must be picked up by a parent or guardian and pay a $15 fee plus the student will serve 10 days of community service.
- Fourth offense - the phone will be confiscated and must be picked up by a parent or guardian and pay a $15 fee. The students will serve one day of ISS, In School Suspension. The student will lose cellphone privilege and must turn in their phone at the front office for the rest of the school year.
Students who do not adhere to these guidelines will be subjected to other disciplinary actions. Students with cell phones must adhere to the Student Code of Conduct, the JHS/SISD Student Handbook, the SISD Acceptable Use Policy, and all Board Policies.
Failure to relinquish the communication device to school personnel when asked to do so or repeated violations may result in additional disciplinary action, including confiscation of the device for a period up to the remainder of the school year.
A student’s parent or guardian may pick up the device after showing proof of ownership. If the device is not claimed, the student’s parent or guardian whose name and address appears on the device shall be given 30 days prior notice of the district’s intent to dispose of the device.
