E Cook Halloween Parade Info

The Halloween Parade will begin INSIDE the school at 12:40 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30th. All parents are welcome to view our costume parade from the circle drive. The students will walk out the north gym doors to the Hazel street sidewalk and continue up to the bus entrance and back into the front doors (map below).

Parents are welcome to meet in the school bus turnaround beginning at 12:30 pm. We kindly ask that you send your child(ren) with their costume in their backpack. We do intend on having significant daytime academics. We find that wearing the costumes during the morning can pose many distractions. Be sure it is a costume that can easily be put on over clothing. Lastly, please refrain from make-up and items as part of your child’s costume, such as weapons or accessories that can be lost or pose other difficulties. We do allow masks, but reserve the right to ask for them to be removed if they are frightening others.

Please be aware that the teachers will no longer be making snack requests for the class celebration. While we are having a Halloween Celebration, we are not accepting treats from home at this time. If you bring in Halloween treats, they will unfortunately be sent back with you.

The staff of Emmeline Cook and I appreciate your cooperation and want to celebrate a great Fall with our Halloween festivities.

School Office Notice

This week is Mrs. Arneson's last week with E Cook. We greatly appreciate all the help she provided at the begining of the school year. She may be back occasionally to sub in the office. If you see her please wish her well!

With that being said... We wanted to let you know that between November 2nd and November 16th, the office will be short staffed. We may not be able to get to your call or email as promptly. We will also be closing down the office between 11am and 12:15pm. This is the students lunch / recess period and we will need to have all hands on deck to appropriatly service the students.

We are not ignoring you!

  • If you call and someone does not answer, please leave a message or email (kari.vis@oshkosh.k12.wi.us)
  • If you are at the door and someone does not answer, please be patient.
  • Ideally try to come to school or call the school before 11am.

We will be with you as soon as possible. Your patience is appreciated.

πŸ“… Your Attendance Matters

We are starting to see an increase in student absences. Please remember to be calling your student in if you know they will be out. Below is the OASD Board Policy 5200 in regards to Attendance.

Board Policy 5200: Parent/Guardian-Excused Pre-Planned Absence

The student has been excused in writing by their parent/guardian before the absence for any reason. A student may not be excused for more than ten (10) days per school year under this paragraph and must complete any coursework missed during the absence.

Examples of reasons for being absent that should be counted under this paragraph include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Professional and other necessary appointments (e.g., medical, dental, and legal) that cannot be scheduled outside of the school day (a doctor's note is helpful)

2. To attend a funeral

3. Legal proceedings that require the student's presence

4. College visits

5. Job fairs

6. Vacations

Please see the school office for PREPLANNED VACATION forms.

Medical Verification Letters are sent after 10 total days (excused or unexcused) of absence. If no medical excuse is provided, absences are unexcused for the rest of the year. With medical documentation, absences are updated to excused. Extenuating circumstances are reviewed case-by-case.

Tips for Parents/Guardians

  • Set attendance goals with your child or track attendance on a calendar
  • Help your child get a good night’s sleep
  • Prep the night before and set a morning routine to streamline your morning
  • Try to schedule medical or dental appointments before or after school hours
  • Schedule trips during school breaks
  • Don’t let your child stay home unless they are truly sick
  • Talk with your child about the reasons they may not want to go to school
  • For students who have chronic health issues, talk with their pediatrician about developing a plan for school
  • Know school start times and contact the school if your child will be late or absent
  • Encourage your child to get involved with after-school activities

Absences Add Up!

Students who miss only 2 days of school per month starting in kindergarten…

  • Will have missed about a MONTH of school by the end of kindergarten
  • Will have missed nearly A HALF YEAR of school by the end of 3rd grade
  • Will have missed A FULL YEAR of school by the end of 8th grade
  • Will have missed OVER A YEAR AND A HALF of school by the end of 12th grade

πŸ₯ΆCold in the Morning...Hot in the Afternoon!

Outdoor Coat Guidelines

Right now it seems as if Mother Nature cannot make up her mind but it is never too early to start prepairing for the COLD weather! We wanted to make sure to send a reminder of the weather guidelines that we follow for outdoor recess and the types of clothing students should be wearing for recess for the next couple of months.

Students are required to go outside for recess for 25 minutes every day UNLESS the temperature is below 10 degrees or the temperature is 0 degrees with the windchill.

Please make sure to start sending your student to school with the appropriate attire for recess. It is suggested that you have a winter coat, hat, mittens or gloves. Snow pants and boots are not necessary until the snow starts to fly.

Here is suggested coat guidelines:

OASD Hearing & Vision Screening

September through November the health office may screen students in Kindergarten, 2nd and 4th grade for:

● Vision

● Hearing

If our screening identifies a concern you will be notified via phone call from Wisconsin Eye Consultants. If you do not receive anything that means your child passed his/her screening and requires no further action.

If you would like to opt out of these free screenings, please notify your school nurse as soon as possible.

Mrs. Arneson, Office Assistant

Q1. How many year have you been in OASD?

- 10 Years

Q2. What was your favorite subject when you were in school?

- Reading & Spelling

Q3. Who was your favorite elementary school teacher, what grade did they teach, and why were they your favorite?

- Mrs. Curle - Roosevelt Elementary in Minot, ND - 1st grade. She taught me so much about what it takes to be a successful reader. Instead of just reading stories, she had us act them out. She also worked a lot on phonics and breaking down words into small words. She also attributed to my love of spelling and reading as an adult.
