Spring Fling!
Burgettstown middle school students in grades 6-8 enjoyed a memorable evening at the Spring Fling Semi-Formal Dance on Saturday, April 25. Held in the middle school gym, the event brought students together for a night of music, dancing, and fun in a festive, spring-themed setting. The dance was organized by the Burgettstown Middle School Cheerleaders, whose hard work helped create a welcome and energetic atmosphere for all who attended. Students also had the opportunity to purchase refreshments and capture special moments with professional photos. The Spring Fling was a wonderful celebration of school spirit and community, and a highlight of the spring season for our middle school students.

Meeting the Department of Education's New Arbor Day Curriculum Requirement
In alignment with new guidance from the Pennsylvania Department of Education, our students recently participated in meaningful learning experiences connected to Arbor Day. Across grade levels, students explored the importance of trees, environmental stewardship, and conservation through hands-on activities and classroom lessons. From learning about the role trees play in our ecosystem to participating in observation activities, students engaged in experiences that brought this new requirement to life. We are proud of the way our teachers embraced this opportunity to connect curriculum with real-world environmental responsibility while creating engaging, memorable learning experiences for our students. Many of the groupings of photographs in this edition of the Weekly Update capture some of the many activities our students participated in on Arbor Day 2026, which was Friday, April 24.
Arbor Day Chalk Art
Our middle school science teachers combined classroom learning with a fun outdoor activity connected to Arbor Day. Students created chalk art murals and sayings related to Arbor Day at both the BMHS and BAEC.
This Week in Tech Ed...
Mr. Dempster's students were hard at work programming and using the laser engraver to make creative projects!
From Story Time to Science
Our first graders listened to The Giving Tree, explored the history of Arbor Day, and then brought their learning to life by creating their very own "personal trees." Each student labeled the leaves, trunk, and roots, cultivating both their creativity and their knowledge.

Blue Devils Earn All-County Honors in Track & Field
Our Blue Devils track and field athletes delivered an outstanding performance at the All-County Championships, earning multiple honors across events!
Leading the way, Max Maltony captured the All-County Championship in the 3200-meter run with an impressive time of 10:14. He also contributed to the boysโ 4x800 relay teamโalongside Mason Steele, Morris Harvey, and Trent Clemโwhich earned All-County recognition with a 6th place finish.
Michael Carrozza turned in a strong showing, placing 5th in the triple jump and 4th in the 110-meter hurdles to earn All-County honors in both events.
On the girlsโ side, Savanna Rush placed 5th in the javelin, Abbie Sell earned a 3rd place finish in the shot put, and Emmie Harrison placed 4th in the discusโeach securing All-County recognition.

"Slam Dunk" the PSSAs
Our 3rd through 5th graders showed teamwork, focus, and determination at the PSSA Pep Rally! We reminded students to take their time, believe in themselves, and give it their best shot. Every question is a chance to score big!
Planting the Seeds of Learning in Second Grade
On Friday, second grade students learned about strong oak trees and how tiny apple seeds grow into big trees that give us yummy apples! Nature is amazing!
In Fourth Grade on Arbor Day
Students explored the history of this special day and why planting trees matters. Then they became tree explorers-- choosing favorites like birch, the banyan, or the beautiful cherry blossom. Which tree would you plant, and why?
Exploring the Important Roles Trees Play
This Arbor Day, our fifth grade students investigated how trees work hard every day, providing oxygen, offering shelter to wildlife, preventing erosion, and keeping our planet healthy. Every tree has a job, and on Arbor Day, our students discovered just how important they are!
Earth Day and Arbor Day: Learning about both in Kindergarten!
Our kindergarten students celebrated Earth Day and Arbor Day this week through hands-on learning both in the classroom and around our school grounds. Students explored how to care for the environment, learned about the importance of trees, and took part in activities that brought these concepts to life. It was a fun and meaningful way to help our youngest learners begin building a lifelong appreciation for the world around them!

Electronic Ticketing for Burgettstown Athletics!
This year, the Burgettstown Athletic Department is introducing digital ticketing for regular season football, volleyball, girls and boys basketball, and wrestling. Though all fans may still purchase a ticket "at the gate," but those who wish to avoid lines and pre-purchase an electronic ticket may do so by accessing the digital ticketing feature on the Hudl Fan page. Single game regular season tickets for both students and adults are available. Also, for those who know that will likely attend all games in a particular season, a season pass can be purchased. Please note: there is a processing fee, per ticket. This fee does not go to the school district, it is a vendor fee in support of the electronic ticketing feature. A Note about Commencement for the Class of 2026
Our school community has embraced the uniqueness of conducting commencement exercises at Star Lake for decades. The various management groups throughout the years have supported this by donating the use of the facility and we are most appreciative. While it is early in the school year, we want to make note that in order to hold graduation at Star Lake, flexibility in planning is necessary. Believe it or not, the planning for the next year begins shortly after the school year ends. We notify Star Lake management of our desired date and it is recorded as a preferred date. There are no guarantees, and in the past several years, we have not been able to finalize the date until some point in April. We know this causes a bit of anxiousness on the part of our seniors and their families, but if we want to continue this fine tradition, we must remain flexible. After last year's Commencement, we informed the management at Star Lake that our preferred date for this year's Commencement is June 5, 2026. While this is our preferred date, there is no guarantee that we will get it. As the months go by this year, the District will remain in contact with Star Lake management. When we know the confirmed date, we will communicate it to our students and families. Though graduation may be the last thing on anyone's mind this early in the school year, we wanted to communicate this information so there are no misunderstandings.
