Principal Update HHS 9-7-26
An International Baccalaureate World School
Week 2: September 7th - 13th
We’ve had a wonderful first week at Huron. The hallways are bustling with energy and classrooms are alive with learning. I am extremely proud of all that our students and staff have achieved in the first week.
Here are a few key pieces of information:
Capsule Night Reminder
Please plan to arrive early. For everyone’s safety and access, do not block fire hydrants, crosswalks, or ADA-accessible ramps. Use designated parking only, follow onsite signage, and be courteous to our neighbors. Thank you for helping us keep our campus safe and welcoming for all.
When You Have Concerns
Concerns about a discipline or academic problem should first be expressed or questioned at the point where the problem occurred. A discipline or academic problem involving a student in a particular class should be brought to the attention of the teacher of that class. If this step does not bring satisfaction, please consult the student’s dean, counselor, advisor, or principal.
Traffic Patterns
To help keep arrival and dismissal safe and efficient, please follow the designated traffic pattern. All family drop-off and pick-up must take place in the south circle off Fuller Road. Parents should not drop students off in the staff parking lot, as it is reserved for staff parking and creates safety concerns. Bus traffic is limited to the northeast circle drive off Huron Parkway, and only buses and authorized vehicles may enter from Huron Parkway. Student drivers should use the designated student parking lots accessed from Fuller Road.
In service,

Welcome Muneer Khalid
We are excited to welcome Muneer Khalid as the High School Dean
Dear Parents and Guardians, I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Muneer Khalid, and I am excited to introduce myself as the Interim High School Dean for Huron High School. I am eager to jump in and become a part of your child’s educational journey. Before joining Huron, I worked at Scarlett Middle School. Prior to Scarlett, I worked at the Foundational Course Initiative (FCI) through the University of Michigan’s Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT). I bring more than a decade of teaching and educational experience in Detroit and Ann Arbor Public Schools, along with several years of experience working abroad. I understand that a transition can sometimes be challenging, but please rest assured that my top priority is to make this transition as smooth as possible for the students. I am committed to creating a positive, engaging, and supportive learning environment where every student can thrive and achieve their best. As I get to know each student, I welcome open communication and encourage you to reach out with any questions, concerns, or information that will help me support your child. You can contact me at khalidm@aaps.k12.mi.us, and I will do my best to respond promptly. I look forward to working with you and your child throughout the 2026-2027 school year. Together, we can ensure that this will be a successful and rewarding experience for everyone. Warm regards, Muneer Khalid

The Green Pass
Attendance Matters
Beginning Tuesday, September 8, we will be reinforcing our schoolwide expectations for arriving to class on time.
Students have five minutes of passing time, with a two-minute warning bell before class begins. Once the final bell rings, classroom doors will be locked, and students arriving late must obtain a pass from an administrator before entering class.
Our Green Pass tardy system resets every marking period, giving students a fresh start every nine weeks. However, students who accumulate 15 or more tardies before Homecoming Week (across all class periods) will be ineligible to attend the Homecoming football game or dance. We encourage families to help students establish routines that support arriving to class on time and ready to learn.
Bicycles on School Grounds & Crosswalk Safety
Students must dismount and walk their bikes while on campus. Bikes should be locked at the rack under the Main Arch. Please use crosswalks and follow all bike-safety expectations.
Here are some reminders for drivers:
Stop for pedestrians at crosswalks (city law).
Do not stop on or over the crosswalk.
No parking or standing within 20 feet of crosswalks.
Health Updates & Medication Info
Patrice Gage, RN | Huron High School Nurse (7th year with AAPS)
Hello Huron families! I am excited to serve the Huron school community! I wanted to reach out to remind you how important it is to have the medications in the school that your student may need for an emergency. The medications can be kept in the nurse clinic, travel with the student in their backpack and/or both. Below is the paperwork to get this started. Please have your student’s health care provider fill out and sign; parent/guardian sign as well and then bring to the school nurse clinic. Please reach out with any questions.
Let’s make it a great year!

Vision Screening
Families of 9th grade Huron High students
Hearing and vision screening is required by the Michigan Public Health Code. It is free and available through the Washtenaw County Health Department.
All Huron High 9th graders will have Vision Screening done by the Washtenaw County Health Department staff on Thursday, 9/17/2026. Students will be called down by class to the Principal Conference Room (PCR). Vision screening includes testing for visual acuity, farsightedness, ability to use two eyes together and symptoms of eye problems. It is a free screening service that does not take long.
Please note that if you do not want your student screened: please send an email to school nurse: gagep@aaps.k12.mi.us and include the student's name and that you are opting out of the screening.

IB Learner Profile
School Safety is Everyone's Responsibility.
As we continue the school year, I want to share several important updates regarding building access, arrival and dismissal, student movement, and our school safety procedures. These expectations are designed to help us maintain a safe, orderly, and welcoming environment for our students, staff, families, and visitors.
At Huron, safety is a shared responsibility. Small actions, including using the correct entrance, arriving and departing at the appropriate times, following traffic procedures, and respecting secured doors, help us take care of one another.
Arrival and the Start of the School Day
- The school doors will open at 7:30 AM only for students who are eating breakfast. Breakfast service begins at 7:30 AM in the cafeteria.
- General access to the building begins at 7:45 AM, and school starts promptly at 8:00 AM. We ask families to plan morning transportation accordingly so that students have enough time to enter the building and arrive in class before the start of the school day.
Visitor Access
- All parents, guardians, visitors, and community members must enter Huron through Door #1, our main entrance. Visitors will be required to sign in with the Community Assistant on duty and present a valid form of identification as part of our visitor management procedures.
- Please do not ask a student or staff member to open another exterior door for you. Even when someone inside the building recognizes a visitor, all visitors must enter through Door #1 and complete the established check-in process.
Changes to Access Under the Arch
- Students and visitors will not have access to the doors under the arch during the school day.
- The doors will open at the designated time following lunch to allow students to re-enter the building. Outside of this scheduled re-entry period, students should not expect to enter the building through these doors.
- Students will transition between classes using the second- and third-floor corridors rather than moving through the first-floor arch area. We anticipate that hallway traffic may be heavier as students become accustomed to this change, and staff will be present throughout the building to help students navigate the new traffic pattern.
- Families can help us by reminding students that they should never prop open an exterior door or open a secured door for another person, even someone they know. We recognize that holding a door is normally an act of kindness and courtesy. In a school environment, however, maintaining secured entrances is another important way we care for our community.
Dismissal and Student Pickup
- The school day concludes at 2:51 PM. Our parking lots and surrounding roads are particularly congested during dismissal, and we ask families to plan ahead, remain patient, follow staff directions, and extend kindness to others.
- If you are collecting your student after school, please be prompt. Students should know their transportation arrangements before the end of the school day whenever possible. Prompt pickup helps us reduce unnecessary congestion around the building and ensures that students are not waiting for extended periods after dismissal.
- If an emergency arises and you need to get a message to your student before the end of the school day, please contact the school office no later than 2:30 PM so that we have sufficient time to deliver the message.
- Families who need to pick up a student during the school day should come to Door #1 and follow our regular sign-in and student release procedures. Please allow additional time for this process rather than asking your student to meet you at another exterior door.
Traffic and Parking
- Our parking lot will be congested during morning drop-off and afternoon pickup. If approaching from the north or south on Huron Parkway, please turn onto Fuller Road and enter the school drive from the right. If coming from the east on Fuller Road, use the traffic light to turn left into the student lot. Please remember that there is no left turn into the lot by the athletic fields.
- Student drivers should use either Fuller Road entrance to access the senior or student parking lots. We ask everyone to drive slowly, remain attentive to pedestrians, follow posted traffic patterns, and avoid stopping in locations that interfere with the flow of buses or other vehicles.
Closed Campus and Food Deliveries
- Huron remains a closed campus. Students may not leave campus or return to their vehicles during the school day without permission from an administrator. Violations may result in disciplinary consequences and, where applicable, suspension of parking privileges.
- Food delivery services, including services such as Uber Eats, are not permitted during the school day. Families should not arrange food deliveries for students, and students should not leave the building to meet delivery drivers.
- Student vehicles parked on school property are also subject to search when there is reasonable suspicion, consistent with district policy.
Keeping Family Information Current
- Please make sure that the school has accurate contact information for your family. If your address, telephone number, email address, or emergency contact information changes, notify your student's class office as soon as possible. Accurate information is especially important when we need to reach families quickly.
Safety and Well-Being
- Above all, our priority is creating an environment in which every student can learn, belong, and thrive. We ask families to speak with their students about making safe choices, following adult directions, respecting secured entrances, and reporting concerns to a trusted adult.
- We also encourage families and students to become familiar with the district's Rights and Responsibilities expectations. These expectations help establish our shared understanding of appropriate conduct and the responsibilities we each carry as members of the school community.
Ubuntu asks us to recognize that the well-being of one person is connected to the well-being of everyone around them. I am because we are. Keeping Huron safe requires all of us: students, staff, families, and community members working together, following our procedures, looking out for one another, and making choices that protect the community we share.
Thank you for your partnership, patience, and continued care for Huron.
Daily Operations At a Glance
7:30 AM Morning Arrival Procedures
Bus riders, drop-off should report underneath the arch where they will pick up a new schedule if they do not already have one, thereafter report to breakfast. Bikes should be locked against the bike rack underneath the arch. Students should walk their bikes once they are on the school campus.
7:45 AM Students will be excused from breakfast and all students report to their 1st period on time. Huron staff will assist students during the first week with getting them to their assigned locations. Look for staff wearing school colors. Locker issues should be reported to the class offices.
Breakfast/Lunch Procedure
In an effort to allow students more room to space themselves, we will allow students to eat in the cafeteria, on our outside benches, and under the arch green bench area to green bench area. Lunchtime will be an opportunity for students to get outdoors. It is typical for students to be a little confused the first week; therefore, staff will be in the halls to assist throughout the day. Lunch lines are long the first couple weeks of school; packing a lunch is encouraged. Students may not leave campus during lunch or wander to unauthorized locations.
Food Delivery During The School Day
HHS Staff are not responsible for food delivered to students during the school day by food delivery establishments, including but not limited to Uber Eats, DoorDash or GrubHub. This is to better ensure the security of the school as well as to minimize disruptions to the school day. Also, students are NOT allowed to leave school to get food. Students found leaving their class will be sent back to class.
Lunch @ Huron High School Cafeteria
The flags displayed in the Huron cafeteria represent our Heritage Hall, a proud symbol of our school’s diverse community. These flags celebrate the various nationalities, races, ethnicities, and backgrounds that make up our student body. At Huron High School, we are committed to equity and inclusiveness, believing that our diverse backgrounds make us stronger and provide an enriching educational experience. With the generous support of our PTSO, Huron Heritage Hall is a vibrant testament to the tapestry of our school and the diversity that defines us.
Indoors: Students have several designated areas within the school where they can enjoy their lunch. These include the cafeteria and other designated indoor areas, offering a comfortable space to dine and connect with peers.
Outdoors: On days with great weather, we encourage students to take advantage of our beautiful campus. Students may choose to enjoy their meal outdoors on our school patios, underneath the under the arch, green bench area to green bench area.
Lunch Expectations: To ensure a safe and enjoyable lunchtime experience for everyone, we kindly ask that all students adhere to the following expectations:
- Attend lunch during your assigned time only. We do not accommodate requests to change lunch schedules.
- Please remember to sanitize your hands before eating.
- Monitor school appropriate language and behavior.
- You may not record anything on campus including, Tik Tok videos or any other unauthorized format.
- Stay in your assigned dining areas, which include the counseling deck, cafeteria deck, underneath the arch, flagpole area, or bus loop green benches.
How to Enter the Servery Line
To maintain a smooth flow of traffic, all students should enter through the main cafeteria doors.
Servery Access: Please refrain from entering the servery areas directly from within the cafeteria. This helps us ensure both efficiency and safety during meal service.
Meal Selection Process: Once you’ve made your meal choice, proceed to a convenient kiosk where our Chartwells staff will assist you in entering your student ID. Multiple stations are located inside the servery areas.
The School Store & Spirit Shop: Located on the first floor, will open during the second week of school and is available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
Lunch Departure Procedures:
Dismissal will begin five minutes before the end of your lunch period. Please remember, you are expected to attend only your assigned lunch. Maintain your independence by making responsible choices your privileges depend on it. And keep in mind, the cameras are always monitoring.
Lunch Times:
Early Lunch: 10:45 AM - 11:11 AM (Dismissal at 11:06 AM)
Late Lunch: 11:40 AM - 12:06 PM (Dismissal at 12:01 PM)
After School/Dismissal Procedures:
Buses depart at 3:00 PM from the Huron Parkway side of the arch.
Parent Pick-Up: After 3:05 PM, parents may use the Huron Parkway entrance to pick up students. Car pick-up is located on the Fuller Road side of the school. All students should exit the building through the nearest door.
After-School Activities: Students participating in after-school activities must be in their designated locations by 3:00 PM. All other students should wait for their rides on the green benches by the flagpole at the south circle off Fuller Road.
Hallway Etiquette
Passing time between classes at Huron is a busy and crowded experience. To ensure a smooth flow of traffic, please remind your student to stay to the right side of the hallway to allow for two-way movement. It’s important that everyone moves safely from one location to the next without gathering in groups during passing time.
Our Community Assistants are stationed throughout the hallways to help students move along safely, and we will provide frequent reminders to keep moving.
Passing time is also an opportunity for students to take care of personal needs, such as using the restroom or stopping by their Class Office. We understand that during the first week, some students may need additional time to adjust to their schedules and transitions. However, after the first week, we will begin monitoring tardies closely.
Please encourage your student to practice punctuality as it is an essential life skill. The habits they develop now will support their future success, both academically and personally.
