District newsletter
September 4
You Shared. We Listened. Here’s What We Heard.
In May 2026, Sedro-Woolley School District invited families to share their perspectives about what is working well in our schools, where we can improve and what priorities should help guide the district moving forward.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to participate. Your feedback matters, and closing the loop means sharing not only what we heard, but how that feedback will help inform our work.
What Families Value
One message came through clearly: our people are one of our greatest strengths.
Families repeatedly recognized the teachers, principals, office staff and support staff who build relationships with students and work each day to help them succeed.
Respondents also identified several other district strengths:
- Communication: Families appreciated school and district newsletters, email, text and phone notifications, social media updates and regular communication from principals.
- Opportunities for students: Career and Technical Education, Northwest Career & Technical Academy, music, arts, athletics, extracurricular activities, outdoor education and multiple pathways toward graduation were all recognized as valuable opportunities.
- School climate and community: Families highlighted positive relationships, a sense of belonging, the benefits of our close-knit school communities and partnerships throughout the Sedro-Woolley area.
Where Families Want Us to Keep Improving
The survey also provided important feedback about areas that need continued attention.
- Student behavior, discipline and safety emerged as the most frequent area of concern. Families shared feedback about bullying, classroom disruptions, attendance, accountability and the importance of maintaining safe and supportive learning environments.
- Academic achievement was another priority. Respondents asked for continued attention to reading and math, intervention for students who are struggling, academic rigor, opportunities for highly capable students and clearer information about student progress.
Families also identified the importance of student support services, including special education, mental health resources, transition services and support for students experiencing academic, behavioral or social challenges.
Communication was both a strength and an area for continued growth. On a five-point scale, families rated the accessibility of district information at approximately 3.5 out of 5. While many respondents praised current communication efforts, others asked for greater transparency, more direct communication when concerns arise and consistent use of district communication tools.
Families also want more opportunities to be involved — including stronger community and business partnerships, greater visibility of district leaders and additional opportunities for two-way conversation.
What Comes Next?
Survey feedback is one piece of a much larger conversation that will continue throughout the 2026–27 school year.
As Superintendent Brett Greenwood begins his first full school year leading Sedro-Woolley School District, his commitment is to listen, learn and support. Feedback from this survey provides an important starting point.
Based on what we heard, district leadership will continue focusing on student safety and behavior, academic achievement and literacy, student support services, communication and transparency, community engagement and responsible stewardship of district resources.
Some of the challenges identified through the survey are complex and will not have quick or simple solutions, particularly as the district works within ongoing budget constraints. Addressing them will require collaboration among staff, students, families, the Board of Directors and community partners.
Throughout the year, we will continue sharing information about this work, the decisions being made and the progress we are making. We will also continue creating opportunities for families and community members to provide feedback.
Our theme for the 2026–27 school year is You Matter. That includes making sure our families know their voices matter, too.
Thank you to everyone who shared feedback. We heard you, and we look forward to continuing the conversation.
Your Voice Matters: Join the Conversation
We are seeking parents and community members to serve on the Superintendent’s Advisory Committee.
This group will meet monthly with Superintendent Brett Greenwood to share perspectives, discuss challenges and provide feedback to help inform district decisions.
We are intentionally looking for a broad range of voices from across our community — including people who may not typically participate in district committees or other school activities.
Space is limited, and members will be asked to commit to attending and actively participating in monthly meetings.
Interested in serving?

Your experiences, questions and perspectives matter. We hope you’ll consider joining the conversation.
Attendance Matters
Every student matters in the Sedro-Woolley School District — and every day they are with us matters, too.
Regular attendance helps students learn, build relationships, develop routines and feel connected to their school community. Even missing just a few days each month can add up over the course of a school year and make it harder for students to keep up.
We also know getting to school every day isn't always simple. Illness, transportation challenges, family circumstances and other barriers can affect attendance. Our goal isn't to blame families when challenges arise. We want to work together to help students be at school as often as possible.
Throughout this school year, we'll share some of the reasons attendance matters — because when you're here, you learn, you connect and you belong.
You matter. Your presence matters. Every school day matters.
Safety Matters
Please join us in welcoming Officer Rachael Humberg, our new School Resource Officer!
Officer Humberg has served with the Sedro-Woolley Police Department for five years and has already spent time building positive relationships with students, staff and our school community through her work as a patrol officer. She is excited to build on those connections in her new role as SRO.
Her primary goal is helping keep our schools safe, but she also wants students to know she is there as a resource. SWHS students are encouraged to stop by her office, say hello in the hallway or reach out if they have a concern. Even if she isn't the right person to help, Officer Humberg hopes she can connect students with someone who can.
When she's not working, you can often find Officer Humberg in the mountains. She's an avid trail runner and snowboarder who has recently been exploring Mount Baker. This summer, her adventures took her even farther from home, including a weeklong hiking trip through the Dolomites!
We're excited to welcome Officer Humberg to this new role and look forward to seeing the relationships she builds with our students, staff and families throughout the school year. 💙🤍
Traffic Impact on East Jones Road — September 8
Families traveling near East Jones Road, west of Cambridge Street, should plan for possible delays on September 8 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
East Jones Road will be reduced to one lane while utility work is completed. The City of Sedro-Woolley anticipates additional closures will be scheduled as crews finish utility work and complete paving.
Please allow extra travel time if your morning or afternoon route takes you through this area.

Prevention Matters
September: Finding Their Thing
By Samantha Stormont
Sedro-Woolley RISE Community Coordinator
Come to a RISE meeting!
Next meeting: Tuesday, September 8
3–4:30 p.m. in the Sedro-Woolley High School Library
Every teen needs something that makes them feel like themselves.
It might be a sport, a musical instrument, art, FFA, robotics, theater, dance, photography, volunteering, working with animals, cooking, building things, or something else entirely. It doesn't have to be something they are naturally great at. It just needs to be something that sparks their interest and makes them want to keep showing up.
These interests can be more than just a way to fill an afternoon. They can give teens a sense of belonging, purpose, confidence, and connection—protective factors that support healthy development and can help reduce the risk of substance use.
Why finding “their thing” matters
The teenage years are a time of exploration. Teens are figuring out who they are, where they fit, and what matters to them. Having something they genuinely care about can provide a positive place to channel their energy and curiosity.
Meaningful activities can also create opportunities to build relationships with positive peers and supportive adults. A coach who notices when a student is struggling, a teacher who encourages their creativity, a teammate who becomes a close friend, or a mentor who believes in their potential can all become important sources of support.
Research and youth development work have increasingly emphasized the importance of helping young people discover their strengths and passions. Natural High describes these interests as a young person's “spark”—something that brings energy, purpose, and joy.
Their thing doesn't have to be your thing
One of the most helpful things parents can do is create opportunities to explore without deciding what the outcome should be.
Maybe your teen isn't interested in the activity you loved growing up. Maybe they try three things and quit all three. Maybe their passion isn't competitive, impressive, or something that will ever go on a college application.
That's okay.
The goal isn't to find the “perfect” activity. It's to help your teen discover what makes them curious, engaged, or excited to learn more.
Pay attention to the moments when they seem most energized. What do they talk about without being asked? What makes them lose track of time? What are they willing to practice even when they're not immediately good at it?
Sometimes finding a passion starts with simply giving a teen permission to try something new.
Help them find opportunities to belong
For some teens, “their thing” will be an organized activity. For others, it might be a smaller interest or a relationship that gives them a sense of purpose.
Encourage your teen to explore opportunities available through school and in the community—clubs, sports, music, arts, service projects, leadership, outdoor activities, jobs, volunteering, and more.
And don't underestimate the importance of the people they meet along the way. A meaningful activity can connect a teen with peers who share their interests and adults who encourage them to grow.
The goal isn't to keep teens busy every minute of the day. It's to help them build a life that includes connection, purpose, healthy outlets, and people who support them.
What parents can do
You don't need to have all the answers. Start with curiosity.
Ask:
- “What is something you wish you could get better at?”
- “What activity makes you lose track of time?”
- “Is there something you've always wanted to try?”
- “Who at school do you really enjoy being around?”
- “If you could try anything this year, what would it be?”
Then listen.
Your teen may already know what their “thing” is. Or they may still be searching. Either way, your encouragement can help them keep exploring.
Because prevention isn't just about telling teens what not to do. It's also about helping them build a life they feel connected to and excited about.
Sometimes, finding one thing you love can be the beginning of finding where you belong.
One Thing to Try
Ask your teen: “What's one thing you'd love to try this year, just because it sounds interesting?”
Don't worry about whether it's practical, productive, or something they will stick with. Just listen—and if they have an idea, help them take one small step toward trying it.
Communication Matters
Download the district app to stay in the loop
As we prepare for the new school year, now is a great time to make sure you have the Sedro-Woolley School District app installed on your phone.
The district app is the easiest way to stay informed with school news, alerts, calendars and announcements. In addition, more and more of our teachers are using Rooms within the app to communicate directly with families, making it easier to receive classroom updates and messages in one convenient place.
Download the free app today:
Apple (iPhone/iPad): https://apple.co/3pG1BRD
Google Play (Android): https://bit.ly/44ni0cx
You will need your student's "magic code" to connect! It's easy. Just email your name and your students' name(s) to swsdcoms@swsd101.org and we will send you a guardian invite that has codes for each child! This code makes it super easy to sync your account! This information will only be shared to emails connected to students in Skyward, so please use that account when emailing the communications team!

Labor Day weekend travel
From our friends at WSDOT
Labor Day weekend will bring lots of travel and congestion to state highways, waterways, at state airports and along pedestrian trails.
We urge travelers to plan ahead, stay alert and give themselves extra time to get to their destinations. Our Labor Day weekend travel charts have dropped to help people beat the rush as well as other tools and tips to make all types of travel easier.
The charts highlight the best and worst times to travel on key state highways most prone to holiday congestion, including:
- US 2 between Skykomish and Stevens Pass
- Interstate 90 between North Bend and Cle Elum
- I-5 between Lacey and Tacoma
- I-5 between Bellingham and the Canadian border
Whether traveling across town or across the state, we encourage travelers to “know before you go” by following these tips:
- Get informed about our online tools, including the our mobile app, traffic cameras and email alerts.
- Visit online traveler information for traffic, weather, ferry schedules and a real-time travel map.
- Follow us on social media including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Bluesky and X.
- Identify potential safety rest areas before heading out, to ensure enough breaks to avoid drowsy driving.
- Have a backup outdoor destination in mind, as parks and other outdoor recreation sites tend to fill up quickly on holiday weekends. If a site’s parking lot is full, never park along road shoulders – this is unsafe for everyone on the roadway, including emergency responders.
Most highway construction paused
Most highway construction will pause to help ease congestion starting Friday, Sept. 4, but delays are still likely – especially in popular areas or due to crashes or wildfires. The Revive I-5 work zone over the Ship Canal Bridge remains in place.
Stay alert to fire danger
Fire danger remains high across the state. If traveling near active wildfires, stay alert and up to date on closures as winds can shift quickly. These tips can help prevent roadside fires:
- Never throw a lit cigarette or any other flammable material out of vehicle windows.
- Keep towing chains from dragging on pavement to avoid sparks.
- Do not park on dry grass, the heat from exhaust systems can spark a brush fire.
- If a brush fire is spotted with no emergency crews around, be sure to alert authorities – do not assume someone else has called it in.
- Always call 911 for real-time emergencies, as opposed to notifying us or the Washington State Patrol via social media or email.
Ferry travel
Washington State Ferry routes also are expected to be busy. Reservations are strongly encouraged on routes that offer them. People boarding a ferry by vehicle can likely expect the busiest sailings and longer wait times to be westbound (or onto an island) Thursday and Friday, Sept. 3-4, and eastbound (or departing an island) Sunday and Monday, Sept. 6-7. Walk-on passengers can bypass vehicle lines and usually board much faster. Other helpful tips to consider:
- All riders should double-check the sailing schedules and sign up to receive rider alerts for service updates.
- Visit Washington State Ferries for details on vehicle reservations for some routes, tracking ferries on a real-time map and checking terminal status.
Safety Starts with Preparation
One of the ways we help keep students safe is by using the Standard Response Protocol (SRP), a nationally recognized system that gives students, staff and first responders a common language during emergencies.
You may hear your child mention one of these safety terms throughout the school year:
- Hold – Stay in the classroom while hallways are cleared.
- Lockout – A situation outside the school requires the building to be secured, but learning continues inside.
- Lockdown – Used when there is a potential threat inside or immediately around the school. Students move out of sight, remain quiet and follow their teacher's directions.
- Evacuate – Move safely to another location.
- Shelter – Take protective action during severe weather or another environmental emergency.
Students and staff practice these procedures throughout the year so everyone knows what to do if an emergency occurs. These drills are conducted in age-appropriate ways to help children build confidence rather than fear.
Stay Connected During Emergencies
One of the most important things you can do as a parent is make sure we can reach you.
The Sedro-Woolley School District sends emergency notifications by email, text message and phone for situations such as school emergencies, weather-related schedule changes, power outages and other important safety information.
Please:
- Verify your phone numbers and email addresses are current with your child's school.
- Make sure you are opted in to receive text messages.
- Please do not unsubscribe from district emails. During an emergency, email is one of our primary ways to provide families with timely, accurate updates.
You can learn more about our Standard Response Protocol, view parent resources and download the family guide at:

Free Child Find Developmental Screenings Available
Do you have questions about your young child's development? Sedro-Woolley School District offers free Child Find screenings to help families identify their child's strengths and determine whether additional support may be beneficial.
Child Find is a free developmental screening for children who live within the Sedro-Woolley School District boundaries. The screening looks at several areas of development, including:
- Large muscle development
- Fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination
- Communication and language skills
- Basic concepts and early learning skills
- Personal-social development
- Self-help skills
During the screening, children participate in age-appropriate activities such as stacking blocks, drawing, counting, naming colors, jumping, and other fun tasks. Following the screening, a trained professional will review the results with parents or caregivers, answer questions, and provide suggestions for supporting their child's development. The entire process typically takes about 45 minutes.
Who is Eligible?
Any child living within Sedro-Woolley School District boundaries whose family or caregivers would like more information about their development may participate.
Schedule a Screening

Central Centennial Celebration — Calling All Alumni
Sedro-Woolley School District is excited to celebrate 100 years of Central Elementary School at our Central Centennial Celebration on Saturday, October 3, 2026, from noon to 2 p.m.
As we prepare for this historic milestone, we are looking for Central Elementary alumni who would be willing to share stories, memories, or possibly serve as speakers during the celebration. Your experiences are part of the rich history that has shaped generations of students in our community.
The celebration will also include a community open house with self-guided tours, giving alumni, families, and community members a chance to walk the halls and revisit the school.
If you attended Central Elementary and would like to share a memory, photos, or be considered as a speaker, we would love to hear from you.

Be Prepared: Sign Up for Skagit Ready Alerts
Skagit County has launched Skagit Ready, a new community notification system powered by Smart911. The system replaces the former CodeRED platform, which is no longer available. Because previous subscriber information was not transferred, everyone must sign up again to continue receiving local alerts.
Skagit Ready provides notifications about emergencies, significant incidents, and preparedness information to help keep you informed. In urgent life-safety emergencies, alerts may also be sent through the federal Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS), which can reach cell phones, radios, and televisions without requiring a subscription.
Signing up is simple and only takes a few minutes. You can choose how much information to provide, and any additional details you share may help 911 dispatchers and first responders better assist your household during an emergency.

Ready communities are stronger communities. Be Skagit Ready.

**Please note that most youth sports are run by volunteer boards of directors. Coaches are most often fellow parents and there is a significant referee shortage amongst almost every sport. Volunteering to coach or training to become a referee is one of the best opportunities a parent or guardian has to stay involved in their child's life through various stages of development!
